Kung Fu Animals (Save the World) for the Savage Worlds RPG
A Savage Worlds roleplaying game about butt-kicking mutant heroes protecting the world from an array of diabolical threats!
What's the Goal?
I want to create the ultimate roleplaying game for fans of comics and shows like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, ThunderCats, Kung Fu Panda, Street Sharks, Captain Planet, and lesser-known classics like Silver Hawks and Tiger Sharks! I grew up loving those shows--where a cast of not-quite-human outcasts protect the world from nefarious threats and costumed maniacs. But outside of some long out of print books, no RPG has managed to capture the fun, excitement, and sheer oddity of those stories.
I want to change that.
So I'm creating KUNG FU ANIMALS (SAVE THE WORLD) using the fast, fun, and furious Savage Worlds roleplaying system.
I'm a huge fan of Savage Worlds, having played it for years and even using it for my own neo-noir crime setting, Streets of Bedlam.
What is KFA(STW)?
KUNG FU ANIMALS (SAVE THE WORLD) is a setting for the hugely-popular and immensely-fun Savage Worlds roleplaying system. It's a book that gives players the tools to create their own wild universes where semi-human characters become the world's greatest heroes. We start with your character's Origin--did they come to being by accident? Experiment? Are they an alien? A machine?--and then build from there. Each step, you get Edges, Hindrances, and Skills that help shape your unique character.
Player groups are encouraged to build groups together as the best source material revolves around groups of diverse personalities who work together. Pick the size of your group, from lone wolf to dynamic duo to a sprawling troupe of heroes. The size of the group determines the dynamic--and the roles within the group. Is your character the jokester? The leader? The rebel? Or maybe they're the mascot? Or master? You have tons of options, each granting specific bonuses that help your character stand out for their unique qualities.
As with all Savage Settings, KUNG FU ANIMALS (SAVE THE WORLD) is all about getting you to the table and playing as soon as possible. Character creation is quick--and you can shortcut the process even further by selecting a pre-made archetype, adding a few points, and being ready to roll in minutes.

The player rules text for KUNG FU ANIMALS (SAVE THE WORLD) is done and ready for review the moment you back this project. You can find a Dropbox link in the first backers-only update.
All that's left for me to do, text-wise, is the introduction and the game moderator chapters that finalize the toolset for anyone to create and run their own series. I'm working on those concurrent to this Kickstarter. I aim to have this all wrapped up by early Summer.
In addition, I am creating the first supplement KUNG FU ANIMALS (HIT THE ROAD) which will introduce FIFTY Kung Fu Animals archetypes--one unique to each of the fifty United States!
Also! I will be creating a PDF-only setting called "Universe of Monsters." This setting will only be available through this Kickstarter as an add-on in the reward tiers to the right.
Really, this Kickstarter's main focus is on securing some amazing artwork for the final book. I've already commissioned a handful of illustrations that you can see here but I need more--a lot more! I've taken great care in finding talented folks and getting the best artwork I can for my projects. I am very happy to say I've lined up some amazing new talent and some industry vets to help bring this book to life.
What's the Final Product?
KUNG FU ANIMALS (SAVE THE WORLD) will be available as a illustrated 7"x10" softcover book with a full-color cover and black and white interiors. The digital version will be a PDF export of those same printer files.
Setting Books, such as the Kickstarter-exclusive "Universe of Monsters," will be PDF-only supplements.
Physical copies will be ordered, signed, and mailed by me. PDF copies will be fulfilled via 100%-off coupons via DriveThruRPG.
Any Stretch Goals?
Yes! If this Kickstarter does well enough, I'll be adding Setting Books that each present a premise, a backstory, pre-made characters, and some crazed baddies that you can take right to the table and get playing immediately.
These setting books will take inspiration from some of some television classics but with their own distinctive spin.
Who Are You, Jason L Blair?
I've been making tabletop roleplaying games since I released my first game, Little Fears, back in 2001. Since then, I've released over twenty books in print and PDF, including work for series such as ICONS, Cartoon Action Hour, and Dark Conspiracy Third Edition.
By day, I work as a writer and narrative designer/director in the video game field, having worked on games such as Conduit 2, Saints Row IV, and Agents of Mayhem. Unlike some of those, though, KUNG FU ANIMALS (SAVE THE WORLD) is appropriate for all ages.
Risks and challenges
The primary risk is a delay in finalizing the book. But the meat of the book is ready for layout with the rest under active development.
A secondary risk is an artist not delivering on their promised illustrations. In that case, I will reach out to the other artists to see if they can handle the work.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
