About The Game
Stellar Chaos is a table-top role playing game set in the not-so-distant future against a hard science fiction backdrop. It's heavily influenced by both Japanese animation and American classic sci-fi, and explores extrapolated and speculative science. The back story for the game universe surrounds Earth's numerous colonial worlds and systems, who have all suddenly and inexplicably lost contact with Earth. In the years to follow this loss of contact, the colonial worlds banded into tenuous Nation States to survive, provide mutual support, and to share or hoard resources. Expeditions back to Earth to discover the reason for the loss of communications have never returned, most likely having been destroyed, and therefore Earth is unanimously declared off-limits a quarantined system.
But that isn't necessarily where stories and adventures end, or begin. Life inside the game is similar to life outside the game: there are many and various stories to tell: corporate espionage, space piracy, resource skirmishes, small town problems, and new exploration are but a sampling of the potential stories that can come from the Stellar Chaos universe.
Indeed, players can choose from one of three primary character races: humans, who inhabit every walk of life, have the most access to jobs and resources, and who run the governments and corporations; artificial humans, who were initially designed and laboratory-bred to be the backbone enslaved labor force for the rigors of space exploration, pre-colonization planetary engineering, colony building and manual labor; and MASE, the more socially acceptable, sentient machines who rose in popularity as an alternative after artificial humans demanded equal rights and recognition, often resulting in bloody uprisings.
Corporations run more colonies and industries than most governments, and even run their own militaries. The largest of the colonial states are owned by corporations, as well.
About The Flux Play System
The Flux playing system is a system of opposed rolls (i.e. skill versus skill, skill versus environment, or attacker versus defender), based very much in real-world principles, science, and physics. It boasts two variants: the Newtonian variant, for those who wish to play with the full rule set for an experience as real as possible; and the Relativity variant, which uses a trimmed down set of core rules, designed to introduce novices to the game system, and for use in streamlined, up-paced action games. Both variants contain the same core rules and principles, but the Newtonian variant allows GMs to add in more advanced rules which increase the level of realism. Many of these rules can be added in or left out according to the GM's discretion and how they want to shape their games.
While dice are used to help determine outcomes, the play system is designed to encourage and reward character role play. There is just as many, if not more, experience points awarded for actually playing the part of your character as there is for winning a dice roll. Defeating an opponent helps your character grow, yes. But, interacting with your GM's campaign world as your character can net a character even greater rewards. Using your character's skills creatively, working through puzzling situations, and even outsmarting the GM will bring the character significant experience bonuses.
Stellar Chaos' Official Storyline
The primary back story is broad and open-ended, officially ending at Present Day, so that Game Masters may mold the universe's continuing story to their liking. So, if one GM wants to have two colonies go to war, it can happen. And the best part is, doing so won't disrupt, or be disrupted by, new expansions to the game. Game expansions and modules are not tied to any particular post-Present Day event, time line, or character; they are stand-alone events that can be worked into any situation to fit with a Game Master's own storyline.
Flexibility Is Key
The game system is scalable so that adventures and campaigns may be as modest or as grand as the Game Master would like it to be. Whether you like deep-space, ship-to-ship fleet campaigns, intercontinental intrigue and conflict, or small-scale, mystery campaigns, Stellar Chaos can do it, and do it without the need to buy additional rules books.
Character growth is not measured in terms of level advancement; instead, players concentrate on using character experience points to progressively improve their character's skills and abilities. Characters can become Jacks-of-all-trades, or highly specialized personnel; it's up to the player. No longer is a character's ability to perform tethered to an arbitrary level. Characters of all experience levels have value, and have the potential to contribute to the character party.
Beyond Stellar Chaos
In addition to the game, we're currently developing a companion online Campaign Management system that will be available through our web site once the game launches. All of these components are aimed at creating a well-rounded, fully-realized, fluid gaming experience, both for the Game Master and player. Game Masters will be able to manage all aspects of a campaign, invite players, see player character sheets, and interact through the manager with their players. Players will be able to manage all of their characters, join and associate characters with campaigns their invited to, and communicate with their fellow players and GMs. And all of this will be accessible from both computer and mobile devices.
How Is Your Pledge Being Used?
Our goal is to have a fully illustrated, complete game manual with all of the rules and source material to run and play a complete game. To that end, we are looking at the following approximate costs:

Risks and challenges
Currently, Stellar Chaos is our primary project. It's our pilot game, but it's also the game that's been through the most development. That being said, we have 5 additional source books for it waiting to be completed, and three other RPGs and one card game on the drawing board. Part of the process of moving forward with those projects will depend upon the success of Stellar Chaos.
Our development of the game is essentially complete. All that remains is production and marketing. Part of the production process is finding the right people to fulfill several roles in terms of technical writing, editing, typesetting, illustration, and layout. So, our schedule can be impacted by these factors.
Either way, though, while our goal is to release in 6-12 months upon completion of this campaign, we're not going to rush the project. We want to put out a top notch game, and have that dictated by quality rather than hitting a hard deadline.
Once the project is funded, we plan not only to use traditional means of advertising to build awareness and interest, but we're also planning on touring a number of the top gaming- and scifi-related conventions around the country.
