About this project
Update #2 - June 25, 2013
Supermoon Filming Successful!
The first full filming adventure of The Art of the Chase was very successful this past weekend as I captured some amazing photos of the rising Supermoon. I am proud to announce that one of my photos was featured on NBC Nightly News as well as the NBC website. The below image taken at the Grand Canyon has gotten over 467,000 views on Google+ alone!
Here are just a few of the images of the Supermoon which you may select as a backer!
Update #1 - June 23, 2013
This weekend, we have been chasing down the perfect supermoon photo with a Nikon 800mm lens + 1.7x teleconverter. Since we've captured several great shots, we've added a few new rewards for backers that include supermoon prints!
Here's the video update we made on Friday...
And here's one of the shots from last night's supermoon!
Stay tuned for more updates from supermoon weekend when we return from the Grand Canyon!
About the Film
Landscape photography for me brings a sense of freedom. Witnessing the incredible wonders of nature makes me a feel a connection to something larger than myself. Sharing that sense and inspiring people to get out and see it for themselves is what my photography is all about.
In this documentary, I will share with you everything that it takes to not only make compelling photos, but also what it takes to make a compelling life. Join me as I explore my new home of Southwest Utah, capture the beauty of the Milky Way, witness and photograph the volcanoes of Hawaii, explore some of the mysterious slot canyons of the Southwest, hike to the magical waterfalls of Oregon, and chase down the perfect image of the Supermoon – all while raising my daughter and working to get my photography business off the ground.
I have a chance with this film to create something really personal - to inspire you to get out and see the wonders around you, to transport you to a new world, and show you that anything you dream is possible. That’s what this film is all about. Let me share with you the things that took me from just having a job to living my life.
What’s in it for you?
I have some great Kickstarter rewards! Everything from access to behind the scenes videos, copies of the film, limited edition prints, photography workshops, and the chance to have your family portraits taken by me at a fantastic National Park. You can even spend the day shooting alongside me and appear in the film! For one special backer, I am offering a SINGLE EDITION PRINT, which will be the only copy of that image EVER SOLD.
All prints are in edition sizes of 100 (except for the Artist’s Choice Single Edition Print) and come with a certificate of authenticity with my signature and seal. I create nothing but the highest quality images so you can be assured of receiving the highest quality prints. You can either choose your print as soon as it becomes available or wait until filming is completed - the choice is yours!
What locations will we be filming and photographing?
Great question! Our location list is based upon the weather and the amount of funding we receive. We have alternate locations in mind in case of inclement weather. Our target locations include:
- Great Basin National Park, NV
- Grand Canyon, AZ (North Rim)
- Little Finland, NV
- Cedar City, UT
- Cedar Breaks National Monument, UT
- Zion National Park, UT
- Escalante, UT
- Hawaii Volcanos National Park, HI
- Crater Lake National Park, OR
- Columbia River Gorge, OR
- And Many More!
How will the funds be used?
The majority of the funds will go to the cost of filming and editing the documentary. The film expenses can be divided into four main categories:
- Filming & Editing
- Rewards Fulfillment
Every possible step has been taken to minimize the costs as much as possible while creating a feature length, professional film and high quality rewards.
Having the right people
One of the biggest keys to success is having the right people in the right place. I know my limitations and I am extremely fortunate to have talented friends and family who have agreed to help me on this venture. I have teamed up with filmmaker Wesly Feuquay who will be co-directing and editing the film, Certified rope access and survival expert Damien Noe who will help keep us safe during canyoneering and backpacking sections of the film, and videographers Tommy Ashby and Keith Howells who will be helping with filming.
I am fortunate to be married to internet marketing expert, Kristi Hines, who is in charge of marketing the film. Last but not least, my mother-in-law, Mary Johnson, will be providing world class baby sitting services. :)
Where does the project stand?
We have already begun filming preliminary aspects of the documentary including interviews and location scouting. Our first full adventure begins with the Rise of the Supermoon which we will be filming between June 20 - 24. If everything goes according to plan, we expect to be finished filming by the middle of November.
- We expect to have the behind the scenes blog up and running around the same time the Kickstarter project finishes.
- Wallpaper packs will be distributed in July, September and November.
- You will be provided a link where you can choose your Limited Edition or Visions Edition print. You may choose at any time during the filming or wait until we're finished with photography - the choice is up to you.
- Workshop dates and locations will be announced the beginning of August. If you choose this reward, we will contact you so you may reserve your date.
- We expect to finished filming in mid November. You will receive a special first film look sometime in January, and we expect to be distributing copies of the film sometime in February.
- 8x10s will be shipped to you in November.
- For those of who who choose the family portrait reward, I will be in contact with you to schedule a date to take your portraits. Every reasonable effort will be made to accomodate your schedule but due to filming constraints, I cannot guarantee I will be available for a specific date.
- If you choose reward #13 - I invite you to join us for filming in Zion National Park. We anticipate filming the last weekend in October. I will be in contact with you to finalize a date. Transportation and lodging fees are not included.
- If you choose the Single Edition Artist's Choice print: I expect this reward to be fulfilled by the end of November.
Thank you for taking the time to read through and support my project. I have been absolutely blown away by the Kickstarter community and sincerely appreciate your support! I will do my very best to keep up with the questions and comments both on this page and after you become a backer. It is my plan to provide you with weekly video updates to keep you up to date on how the project is doing and give you a look at how things are progressing behind the scenes. Again, thank you so much for your support!

Risks and challenges
As a photographer, you quickly learn that one of your biggest challenges is always the weather. When you want clouds, you get clear skies. When you need clear skies, you get rain. Mother nature is unpredictable and will deliver only what she feels like at the time. The utmost research has been put into being in the right location at the right time, but there is still a degree of chance.
To ensure I get the best shots possible, I am giving us plenty of time at each location which will help us to see a variety of weather conditions and get the best shot possible. In the unlikely event that you are not satisfied with choosing from the gallery of shots from the film (this is unlikely as I plan to have several shots per location), you are welcome to pick from my currently online gallery of fine art photography as well.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
