KUPERMAN is a full-length micro-budget indie comedy movie, about Griffin Kuperman, a small town zero who must face his fears, snap out of his fantasy world and become his own hero in order to save his struggling comic book store, his friendship and himself. In the age of arm-chair bravado, but dwindling face to face honour, KUPERMAN makes us look at and laugh at ourselves.
Co-written by PEI filmmakers Harmony Wagner and Jason Rogerson, KUPERMAN is one of 15 projects selected to receive Telefilm Canada's Micro-Budget Production Funding in 2014. Fresh from screening their short film, Queen of the Crows, in the Canada program at the Cannes Film Festival, the team is currently prepping KUPERMAN to begin shooting on location on Prince Edward Island September 22 - October 8 2014.
WHY SUPPORT THIS PROJECT?
For the love of Comics:
Let's face it, comic book fans are the unsung heroes of our time. They program our software, invent our technologies, map out our future. Sadly, their uberpowers are wiping out the very hub where they once sought refuge: the comic book store. KUPERMAN is a love letter to those holdouts who continue to strive against extinction and create a safe space for misfits and gamers.
For the love of Laughing:
Does the world need another carnage-drenched tentpole movie with explosions only slightly bigger than the holes in the plot line? No! The world needs more quirky, indie, character-driven bromances in the vein of Superbad and Napoleon Dynamite. KUPERMAN will offer 80 minutes of uplift and escape from today's headlines.
For the love (or pity) of Prince Edward Island:
Who doesn't want to see the beauty of PEI beaches and quaint, historical Charlottetown onscreen? Our government. Due to a lack of tax credits and provincial film programs, PEI stories are not being told in the film and tv industry. Periscope Pictures wants to do it's part to create work for our talent and build an industry for PEI. KUPERMAN is the first step. Besides, Anne is getting old and Stompin' Tom is gone. The Island needs a new ambassador: KUPERMAN.
Plus, we are going to take this opportunity to help artists in our community promote their own work. We are showcasing the PEI indie music scene in our soundtrack and local comic illustrators' original works in the story.
For the love of Canada:
Ok. Everyone knows that Canadians don't like to watch Canadian movies. Why? Because they are always too safe and measured. Canadians are so polite, they afraid to take risks. But look at Trailer Park Boys, Porky's, Kids In the Hall. It is only when we've gone out on a limb that Canadian stuff has received global recognition and got those American/British-show-loving Canadian's to watch in droves. Isn't it time we had our own break out indie comedy film success story? As a micro-budget, part of a grant program, KUPERMAN is off the leash to take risks.
For the love of Jason and Harmony:
If you know Jason and Harmony then you know they are pillars of their community. If you don't know them, they would still push your car out of a ditch in a snowstorm! Who knows how much cancer Jason has prevented by producing seven seasons of sketch comedy for Sketch-22, because after all, laughter is the best medicine. Likewise, Harmony does her part to lessen the Healthcare budget with her Traditional Chinese Medicine practice, volunteering her expertise to a free kids clinic, qigong and kung fu classes. If these folks have ever made you feel better, help them make a dream come true.
WHERE WILL YOUR MONEY GO?
The Kickstarter goal goes directly to cast and crew wages, covering one day of shooting. If we exceed our goal, it enable us to pay people better for their hard work and talents!
Risks and challenges
Weather. We are shooting outside in the Maritimes. It would still be a question in July...but this is fall and it's snowing in Calgary!
While we've factored the need for space in our schedule and budget to allow for some delays due to weather...any surplus to the Kickstarter goal will help us if we get more than 2 days of surprises. Dig deep Calgary! We feel your pain.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
