"I don't get the joke."
Despite my longstanding reputation as a comedy musician, I spent a good portion of my free time in 2016 writing vaguely-nostalgic instrumentals that I couldn't necessarily release under the guise of a fictitious parody "band" like Sunrise Skater Kids. I visualized my first non-parody project taking form, and set out with a simple goal - to make fun music and to have fun doing it, in whatever form that would eventually take. I also like movies. And movie references. Deliberate, blatant references.
Luckily, the vocalist of Toronto-based progressive metal act Red Handed Denial also had a YouTube presence, and her distinct style caught my ear. I joined forces with Lauren Babic and together we created the No Words Spoken EP along with eight covers. Shortly after, my friend and longtime collaborator Patty Walters reached out in search of a new creative outlet. Although he's well-known as the front man for As It Is, Patty's musical roots are mostly instrumental and we welcomed his addition with open arms. The obvious next step was to write, produce and release a full-length studio album. Right? Right.
We are 100% independent from any record label, a position that gives us unique advantages and disadvantages. One disadvantage is that we have a way smaller pool of money for financing large-scale projects such as this one. Making music can be unexpectedly pricey (just check out the Budget section below), but a solid $50,000 would ensure a high-quality product that meets industry standards. Every contribution earns something tangible in return, so view this Kickstarter as more of a pre-order than a fundraiser. If we don't reach the goal before March 1st, no one will be charged and the album gets cancelled (yikes). With three successful crowdfunders under my belt, you can trust that I know what I'm doing.
We hope you guys liked Shinebox. Thanks for your continued support, and we're excited to see where CrazyEightyEight takes us!
This Kickstarter campaign is all or nothing, meaning that you will not be charged if the $50,000 goal is not met before March 1st. Most orders are expected to arrive May 2018 (with the exception of vinyl records), but that estimate is not guaranteed. We're going to produce the best album possible, and we'll take as much time as we need to make that happen. Please check the rewards column on the right-side of this page for details and disclaimers BEFORE ordering!

Contrary to what some online armchair producers might say, our budget is very modest and you need money to make money. Remember that this is a "pre-order" and every pledge has a production cost. The amounts listed below were calculated based on the rates of several studios and the accounting from previous crowdfunding campaigns.
- Recording & editing: $5,000
- Mixing & mastering: $12,000
- Media (artwork, videos, etc.): $1,500 to $2,000
- Distribution & publishing: $250 to $400
- Travel (flights, lodging, etc.): $1,000 to $1,500
- Fulfillment (merchandise, shipping, etc.): $18,000*
- Kickstarter fee (5% total amount funded): $2,500*
- Processing fees (3% + $0.20 per pledge): $1,500*
- Taxes (20% estimated): $9,500*
*Please remember that percentage-based costs will increase proportionally to the total amount funded in the event of over-funding.

Although I currently can't wrap my head around raising more than $50,000, the possibility is there and we've designed some stretch goals to encourage further funding. Extra funds will be fed back into the project, improving the overall quality of the album. 100% of your pledge will be used!
- $60,000 - We'll create Covers, Vol. 3 and release it alongside the album!
- $80,000 - More songs! This would result in a deluxe edition or EP later in 2018.
- $100,000 - We will create a multi-song concept film - a "super music video" of sorts.
- $150,000 - Oh hai Mark! We'll hire Tommy Wiseau to direct a music video.
"Why is shipping so expensive?"
Because it just is. We're actually charging you less than what it will eventually cost us in the end. Unfortunately, we don't have any merch suppliers based in Europe or Australia so all merch will have to be shipped out from the United States. Maybe when we're bigger. Sorry.

Risks and challenges
1. We don't reach our goal of $50,000.
2. Lauren dies.
3. Jarrod dies.
4. Patty dies. Well, he could easily be replaced, but his loss would make us really sad.
5. We come across $50,000 worth of peanut butter M&Ms.
