Taking the seed of an idea to the next step, the sproutboard is a very powerful and flexible platform for use with open source microcontrollers that has been designed for beginners to experts to experiment with. There are many products on the market that utilize the shield concept of experimentation with the Arduino but until now there has not been a product that allowed the creation of permanent use projects that are clean solidly constructed, aesthetically pleasing and easy to use.
The sproutboard basic has been available for almost 2 years and we have provided more than a thousand of them to our growing community. The sproutboard however is in need of an update and design changes that we are introducing with the Sproutboard Pro and Sproutboard integrated versions.
Focusing on the feedback from the sproutboard community we have gone to work designing and developing an updated series of sproutboard that are designed to be as flexible as possible. With the ability to use any version of the arduino, Netduino, arduino clone or even the new integrated version with the arduino clone built into the board.
The sproutboard pro takes all of the best design elements of the original sproutboard basic version and ramps them up into a new board. This board design keeps the board current with the changing and evolving technology on the Arduino. First and foremost is we have made the board compatible with the new 10 pin headers on the new R3 Arduino Uno platform while keeping compatibility with older boards. Additionally we have added the ICSP headers to ensure that the board is completely compatible with all Ethernet shields that have been produced. We have also added a new RJ-45 connector. This connector enables you to remotely run sensors through a single RJ-45 Cable that are normally dedicated to the screw terminal I/O. The long and short of this is that using a standard RJ-45 connector you can now run the sensors or control interfaces easily to any device you may want to interact with. In addition to this we have actually now created a multiplex or board designed to plug into this RJ-45 connector that greatly expands the number of sensor ports available to the sprout board.
The sproutboard integrated offers all of the same features of the sproutboard pro with the one difference of having an Arduino friendly clone directly integrated into the board and while minimalistic still possesses all of the significant features inherent to the Arduino platform. As part of this design we've made sure to use high-quality components multiple status LEDs and a six pin serial header in place of the traditional high cost USB to FDDI connection found on the Arduino platform to simplify this board and ensure high-quality construction. In addition to having the onboard built-in Atmel based microcontroller we have still retained a full Arduino shield design adjacent to the microcontroller on the board.

Over the last few years we have been fortunate to have the sproutboard so widely adopted. There have been many creative uses of the sproutboard. While the mainstay has been in monitoring, network / web integrated applications and automation and production oriented, there have also been many projects focused on aquariums, hydroponics, home automation, security systems and some really clever interactive art installations.
Here is an example of the sproutboard mounted in a rack mount chassis. we also have added in a Ethernet shield and serial LCD monitor. this is a great example of the flexibility of the sproutboard.
So if you're looking for environmental monitoring of server room vitals or controlling the sprinklers in your back yard the sproutboard is a good choice to experiment with.
One facet of the sproutboard as a platform of choice is the fact we are always adding new accessories. Below as an example is the new Multiplexer board. This board expands the capability of the sproutboard by creating 8 dedicated analog Inputs as well as an additional 2 dedicated screw for you to use in monitoring. It also has many other sensor options like humidity, temperature, water level, push buttons and mag switches that simple connect with cheap and easy to use phone cords.
With a thousand sproutboard in the wild and many people tinkering on them, expanding and developing more examples and ideas for use we have a vibrant community that we support and actually appreciate! Every time we come up with a new idea or project we publish instructions on our site so you can learn from our experiments.
