The Project: Announcing the long-awaited memoir/exploration by internationally famed Ethical Slut author Janet W. Hardy: Girlfag: A Life Told in Sex and Musicals!
Girlfags – women who love, are attracted to, and identify with gay men – are a growing community with a growing voice. Girlfags are not fag hags – fag hags enjoy gay men as company; girlfags enjoy them as bedmates and peers. Girlfags are everywhere.
Janet notes, “I get much the same reaction when I mention ‘girlfags’ as I used to when I talked about ‘ethical sluts’ – a sudden lighting up of the eyes, a giggle, and a startled ‘Hey, that’s me!”’ And Facebook groups, Yahoo groups, a Wikipedia entry, a Livejournal blog, and a television series called Girls Who Like Boys Who Like Boys offer signs that The Age of the Girlfag is at hand.
Janet’s book Girlfag: A Life Told In Sex and Musicals is a memoir, and much more. It visits girlfags past and present (from Pharaoh Hatshepsut through Mary Renault), it meanders through the shifting meanings of gender and orientation, and it spends a whole lot of time at the theater (Janet is not just a girlfag, she’s also a showtune queen).
The Audience: The audience for this book would, of course, be other girlfags, but it would go far beyond them. Gay men who find themselves in, or considering, relationships with women would want this book, as would anyone interested in a more nuanced view of gender and relationships than the current binary models. Anyone who read and enjoyed Lisa M. Diamond’s Sexual Fluidity will want to read Girlfag – including students and teachers in hundreds of women’s and gender studies classes in universities all over the world. The Marketing: Girlfag will be promoted with an author tour of at least six cities (New York, Chicago, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco and Los Angeles), as well as author appearances on sex-positive radio shows and podcasts internationally and a mailing of at least 750 postcards to bookstores, book buyers and media outlets around the U.S. The book’s cover will be designed by longtime Hardy collaborator John Brenner of Johnnyink, with an image that will also be made available as t-shirts and other merchandise. It will be available as a trade paperback and in all common ebook formats. Two excerpts from Girlfag have appeared in very successful anthologies (Best Sex Writing 2010 from Cleis Press, and Gender Outlaws: The Next Generation from Seal Press), building anticipation for this important book.
The People: Girlfag will be the eleventh book authored or co-authored by Janet Hardy, and her first memoir. It will be published by her new imprint Beyond Binary Books. Janet founded the world’s most respected alternative sexuality micropublisher Greenery Press in 1992, and built it from two quick-printed spiral-bound volumes to more than 100 books in print. Greenery Press was sold in 2010, and this is Janet’s first publishing venture since.
Janet holds an MFA in Creative Nonficton from St. Mary’s College of California, and has taught English and Women’s Studies at the university level. Her book The Ethical Slut, co-authored with Dossie Easton, has sold more than 100,000 copies in two editions and has been translated into at least five languages.
All Beyond Binary Books titles will be distributed by SCB Distributors in Gardena, CA, the nation’s premier distributor of small-press books about sexuality. Through SCB, Girlfag will be available in all major chains, independent bookstores, erotic boutiques and GLBT bookstores throughout North America.
