About this project
Drawing Success is a 36-lesson DVD course that teaches teens and adults how to draw practically anything...and draw it well! I'm Jan Bower, a professional portrait artist, book illustrator, and art instructor who is passionate about helping others draw what they love and love what they draw. People always tell me, "I can't even draw a stick figure." I take that as a personal challenge to prove: YES THEY CAN!
I love teaching in my own studio, but I can only reach so many students in person! That's why, for more than a year I have been recording my lessons and techniques: so that eager students can have this valuable information at their fingertips. Most artists are visual learners, and Drawing Success gives them the exact style of teaching they thrive on: step-by-step demonstrations with verbal explanations of the "whys" and "hows" of drawing. All this valuable instruction is presented in a style that is enjoyable, inspiring, and very encouraging.
Please check out our rewards!
Each book was written by my husband, Gary, and illustrated by me, using my many children and grandchildren as models.
Each of these art prints appears in one of my picture books.
Your generosity can touch many lives through the influence of upcoming artists and illustrators. Thank you for participating in our campaign to help another generation of eager artists hone their skills and beautify our world!
Risks and challenges
We have put thousands of hours into this project, and expect Drawing Success to be ready for shipping this fall (projecting mid-to-late October 2014?) barring delays by our book printers, but we don't anticipate that being the case.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
While "Drawing Success" was designed with serious art students in mind (teens and adults), a mature younger child would certainly enjoy and gain much from the course. The youngest we have actually tested the DVD course on was 12 years, but in person I have taught these principles to much younger kids with great results.
One of the beautiful things about drawing is that all you absolutely need is a pencil or pen and a scrap of paper. The oil painting classes I teach in my studio require paints, medium, brushes, canvases, easel, and a lot of other expensive supplies...they're expensive and they take up a lot of space. For "Drawing Success" we use a handful of basic inexpensive tools. These can easily be purchased at an art store, or students will be able to have the option of ordering from me a package containing every item they'll need for this course. The exact price isn't nailed down yet, but the supplies should run around $30.
