About this project
That old book you found in that locked safe in the hidden room underneath the Arkham library had some pretty interesting tidbits — including a formula to grow a terrifying tentacled beast. But your friends took a peek and now they all want to grow their own god. You’ve got your trusty twelve-gauge handy to blast a tentacle here and there and make sure your creature grows to completion first. And they call you mad …
Who’s Doing This?
Signal Fire Studios is a new small-press game publishing company that combines proven experience, exciting new talent, and 21st century ideas. The Internet and social media are a big part of our marketing and social outreach, and we’ve come to realize Kickstarter is a fantastic tool to allow our friends, fans, and those who discover and like our ideas to help us produce exciting products and build our business.
This Kickstarter is for our very first product to be sold through distribution channels, and our company is building things from the ground up with limited startup cash. With your help, we can not only produce this game but are laying the foundation for future releases. The good news is that you only pay if the project is successfully funded. You can find our goal up in the top right corner. Our products will be sold through Publisher Services Inc. (PSI), a sales & fulfillment partner located just down the road from the Signal Fire offices, that represents some of the best-known brands in the industry and sells through multiple sales channels.
What’s The Game?
Building An Elder God is a casual card game of Lovecraftian construction for 2-5 players ages 8 and up. The rules are easy to learn and a typical game takes from 15-30 minutes, depending on the number of players. Build a Cthulhu-esque tentacled monstrosity to completion before the other players, using damage cards to blast your opponents’ creatures (and slow down their progress) in order to win! Assuming there is no aversion to a little implied violence and the sight of ichor, this is appropriate for friends and families. There are 115 standard cards in the set, plus 10 half-size Necronomicon cards. A four-page rules booklet is included.
Good news … The game is DONE! This is not a project that we will complete if we get funded. We have already completed Building An Elder God. The only work left to do is finalize the box artwork and design, and organize our artwork and rules according to the needs of our printer, and get the files to press. With some help we can get this process started quickly!
What Will The Backers Get?
Starting at only five bucks you get a print-at-home version of our game—something that every backer of that level or higher gets as soon as this project is successfully funded! At $25 or more you also get a full copy of the game, as well as recognition for your help in getting this product out to the world. Different reward levels will give you more Lovecraft-inspired artwork from artist and designer Ben Mund, along with the chance to get unique monster cards made based on your face!
What If We Beat Our Goal?
With more cash to work with we can print more in the initial run of the game, keeping it in stock longer through game retailers, at conventions, and online. If we get higher, we have another Cthulhu-themed product that Ben and Jamie are working on, and we will open up related rewards for them. There is also a follow-up game to Building An Elder God already in the works — with more of a pulp adventure theme — and funds in excess of our needs will go toward its development and publication.
Update! (3/18/2012) - Well we HAVE exceeded our goal and even made it to our first "stretch" goal of $11,500 and have officially unlocked the first rewards that include a Lovecraftian children's parody book: The Very Hungry Cthulhupillar. See the rewards over to the right for specifics with the following note: ALL rewards $55 and over include the eBook (PDF) edition of the book whether is specifically says so in the reward listing or not. If we reach $13,500 we will produce an actual physical, limited-edition, full-color hardcover book offered at a new reward level. And if we successfully reach the $15,000 level we will offer up yet another Lovecraftian crossover reward for our backers. Review the updates for full details and sneak peeks!
How Does Kickstarter Work?
Here’s the short version: For one month anyone can make pledges for this project, starting at $1 and going up as high as you’re willing. Then you can select a reward package equal to or less than the amount of your pledge. You can pledge more than a reward level if you choose, which is something that international backers will need to do to cover shipping. Your credit card won’t be charged until the project is funded, so you can adjust or cancel your pledge up until the deadline. Once the project is funded we’ll proceed printing our game and delivering on the promised rewards. And our company will be off to a great start!
Our rewards will be shipped out by our fulfillment company (PSI), as well as doing some of the work ourselves at the Signal Fire Studios offices in Marietta, Georgia.
I live outside the USA. Do I need to pay extra?
We wish that shipping to other countries didn’t make things more expensive, but it does raise the cost a bit. Canada/Mexico Backers: Please add $8 to your pledge to cover the additional cost of shipping your rewards. Overseas Backers: Please add $15.
