In life there are portals everywhere. They open and close every day, they are as normal as the sun setting or the water rising. Call it a natural phenomenon or a phenomenon of the universe, they are there whether you see them or not. Some are only felt and never seen. Some open when you are born and stay open your whole life. Others might open only once, and some you may never even know.
These portals, as magical as they are, are taken for granted as we grow older. So I created Open Portals™, a deck of thirty six portals you can open, with twelve different gods to summon that may offer possibilities and reminders on the greatness of life.
Each Open Portals Playing Card deck includes a 'how to open portals' game manual and a second manual on how to 'open portals for oracles'
Open Portals Playing Cards is a fully illustrated deck with 56 cards and inventive multiplayer game. The deck of cards is based on the classic poker sized playing card deck and will be printed by the United States Playing Card Company. We will be using high quality classic Bicycle playing card stock.
Backers will have the option between the Original Deck and the Darkside Deck with the choice of regular edges, gold gilded edges, or the Kickstarter exclusive Cherry Red edges. All variations on the deck are available for $22. The red gilding will only be produced for this campaign. You will be able to select your choice at the end of the campaign during the backer surveys.
The box will be made with the highest quality materials: Soft Touch Midnight Blue 100pt stock with gold and white foil printing and gold embossments with an inner metallic gold lining.
Open Portals can be used to play any card game, but Open Portals also comes with 2 extra joker cards needed to play Open Portals and a 'how to open portals' manual that instructs players on how to play with instructions and a detailed back story. The game was created in collaboration with my brother Sean Eads. It starts by dealing each player a hand of fourteen cards. During this round players design their hand and decide a class of magic to build off of (pictured below).
After the passing round, players begin summoning Gods. Each God has a unique action when played, that makes the game complex and ever changing
Players then score points by opening portals of their corresponding magic (ace). The first player to open thirty six portals wins.
There are beginner and advanced versions to the game that players can learn as they become more familiar with the game play.
The "how to open portals' manual comes with every deck. it's compact, fits in your pocket and is packed with information on how to play Open Portals.
When opened, the manual is 7" x 30" long and is doubled sided with complete rules for 2 person, 3 person and 4 person games.
There are a lot of different items built into this kickstarter that you can pledge towards, which in turn helps the project get funded and also gets you something really cool. A few things to note:
*The Open Portals Playing Cards are built into all pledges over $20!*
**All pledges over $40 will come with the four aces stickers!**
If you would like both the Original and Darkside decks you can pledge for "Two Open Portals" at the $44 level.
If you'd like all four variations (Original + Gold Edges, Original + Red Edges, Darkside + Gold Edges and Darkside + Red Edges) you can pledge towards "Four Open Portals" at the $88 level.
You can mix and match once backer surveys are sent out and select which deck variations you want!
Instead of doing a lot of complex tier variations I am using a reward add-on system for this campaign. First pledge towards a reward tier for the highest priced item you would like, then click the 'manage my pledge' button and add on the dollar amount for anything extra you want that isn't included in your tier. There is a detailed add-on menu after the stretch goals that explains how to do so.
First, choose a reward tier and pledge. Once you have pledged for your main item you can click on the “Manage My Pledge” button and add the amount of your add-ons you would like. After the funding period, you will be able to specify versions, sizes, etc.

There's a lot of depth to this project, with multiple layers to how the cards came to be and what it all means. As the campaign advances check back on the instagram page for behind the scenes updates.
For the tarot inclined, open portals can be used as an oracle deck as a means of divination or clarity. Each card has a detailed meaning and cards have numerical symbolism and meanings often seen in tarot.
You can read more about the oracle guide in Update #9
Well, you're here at the very beginning of it all, which means not only will you be getting the first edition of everything, but you will also be getting everything at the lowest price it will ever be. The playing cards and the game are going to be of the highest quality, with as many aspects of the project as possible produced in my studio in Los Angeles.
This project would not have been possible without the people who have helped bring it to life.
Special thanks to Sean Eads for developing Open Portals the Game and scoring the campaign video, Jackson Kroopf for filming and editing the video, Cal Tabuena-Frolli, Andres Zavala, Camille Wong, Allison Young, for producing the screenprints and other products and to everyone involved in the game focus groups including but not limited to Jerome Byron-Hord, Hana Ward, Paul Eads, Mindy Eads, Beau Roffman.
Risks and challenges
When designing complex project there are bound to be hiccups along the way. I've set November as the delivery date for all aspects of the project, but we're hoping to get everything out much sooner than that.
We're going to produce as much as we can in our studio in Los Angeles, with the hope that everything has an extra level of artist-made high quality craftsmanship, so please forgive us if it seems like a far way away, we're just trying to make this the coolest deck of cards you'll ever own.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
