The Football Crest Index is an independent publication that documents the rich visual history behind the crests of every football club in the world.
Why Serie A?
After the success of Vol.1 which covered the 47 clubs to have graced the Premier League, we launched a poll on where to cover next: 39% of 314 votes swayed for Serie A.
How we make it?
Whilst making Vol.1 we designed & developed an online platform that could work as both a digital crest index and a research tool. This allows us to add leagues, clubs and crests to fact check amongst supporters and clubs before going to print.
The findings on each club are then taken into art working where each crest from the clubs history is individually prepared for print. This process is time-consuming and as we found from Vol.1 most older crests we come across, or are sent are in bad condition from both a resolution and colour perspective.
In Vol.2 the following clubs are included: A.C. Cesena, A.C. ChievoVerona, A.C. Milan, A.C. Pisa 1909, A.C. Reggiana 1919, A.S. Livorno Calcio, A.S. Roma, ACF Fiorentina, Ascoli Picchio F.C. 1898, Atalanta B.C., Benevento Calcio, Bologna F.C. 1909, Brescia Calcio, Cagliari Calcio, Calcio Catania, Carpi F.C. 1909, Como 1907, Delfino Pescara 1936, F.C. Bari 1908, F.C. Crotone, F.C. Internazionale Milano, Genoa C.F.C., Hellas Verona F.C., Juventus F.C., Parma Calcio 1913, S.P.A.L. 2013, S.S.C. Napoli, SS Lazio, Torino F.C., U.C. Sampdoria, U.S. Ancona 1905, U.S. Lecce, Udinese Calcio, Vicenza Calcio.
To give the printed publication a unique format & rich execution, we pull together a designer/artist or illustrator to represent each club featured. This artwork is completely original and confined to a very open brief: Represent the clubs identity in your style.
Changes to Content
For the first Volume, we worked alongside four guest editors who worked with an initial bank of research partaken by one person. For Vol.2 we've decided to cut down the amount of copy for each club meaning we can produce the book much more efficiently, and have less concern around false information slipping through.
If successfully funded, the new book will be designed and art worked by London based design studio Beuro and printed with London based printers, Push Print.
More details on our final print spec will be released in our weekly planned project updates but as it stands we're looking at a cover with 150gsm Munken overboard, and inner pages at 120gsm Munken Smooth, Endpapers 175gsm Colorplan at a comfortable size of 16.5 x 23cm.
Last time out we suffered some minor issues with shipping to the other side of the world. Although every copy went through the same distribution service, a handful slipped the net of either duties or the postman at the other end. This time around we are working to a lower production of books and orders, and whilst still taking orders from around the world our shipping will be handled by Royal Mail, with signed postage set in stone.

Risks and Challenges
This time around the whole project is incredibly low risk. We've already received the artwork for the book and we're already 50% of the way through art working crests as they'll go up on our online index shortly after we (hopefully) publish Vol.2 in print.
Our next challenge is making sure the book looks and feels as good as Vol.1 does - and then work out how where we take things next...

Keep in touch with the project...
Alongside the Kickstarter, we'll be continuing to post project updates & sneak previews of the designers work across our Twitter, Instagram & Website and don't hesitate to get in touch if you've got any questions or are interested in being involved in future releases.
Risks and challenges
With our first book already produced, and the edits to be made for a reprint already confirmed - the whole reprint project is an incredibly low risk.
We'll be using the same printers in Leycol that produced our first and our second volume. We'll be partnering with the same distribution company that handled global shipping of the first volume and the book itself is obviously already designed and ready for print.
