Help us Publish The Football Crest Index Vol.1 & 2
A detailed history behind the crests of 34 clubs to have graced Serie A, alongside the reprint of Vol 1: The Premier League.
The Football Crest Index is an independent publication that's set out to document the rich history behind the crests of the greatest clubs in world football. The book delves into the rich history of each crest and the evolution of its design throughout the clubs history.
After the success of our first volume covering the 47 clubs to have graced the Premier League, we're back, as promised to cover Serie A.
Why Serie A?
During the process of making Vol.1, we kept a close eye on how we planned to develop the project.
Firstly, by building a new online index that we could use as our own research tool. This new site lets us add clubs and gauge feedback from real supporters on the facts or something we might have missed.
Secondly, by keeping an ongoing conversation with our followers on Twitter we launched a poll on what league to cover in print next. The results; 39% of 314 votes swayed for Serie A. The rest is history.
To give the project a unique format & rich execution, we've pulled together 34 new designers to represent each club in the book. Each spread will feature an exclusive, original piece of artwork which that designer feels represents the clubs identity.
The past four months have seen us delve deep into researching each club set to be featured in the book. We've dedicated nights & weekends to sorting this research into concise & accurate introductions that are now set to be finalised by a host of guest editors we've pulled together to help out.
Special guest editors will be announced towards the end of the year.
Re-Printing Volume 1
In 2017 we published our first volume covering The Premier League. Completing our funding through Kickstarter we went on to produce something we would totally underestimate. The book's popularity went through the roof and due to selling out worldwide, we're back to try and reprint the book complete with new updates and a fresh edit.
Print & Allowances
If successfully funded, we intend to continue our ongoing partnership with London based printers, Leycol.
Leycol holds down an incredible portfolio, the perfect fit to produce our book. With their main office also based near us in East London, it also means we can go down & take a look at proceedings once we go to print.
More details on our final print spec will be released in our weekly planned project updates but as it stands we're looking at a Cover with 150gsm Munken overboard, and inner pages at 120gsm Munken Smooth, Endpapers 175gsm Colorplan at a comfortable size of 16.5 x 23cm.
We know we've still got a long way to go before we achieve our goal but from the very bottom of our hearts, we'd like to give a huge thanks to the people who've already aided us in getting us to this point.
Risks and challenges
We've been hard at work designing, re-designing, asking questions, going back over & re-thinking how best to layout & present such content. As we launch our Kickstarter we're in a really good position as we begin to input real content.
Time wise we've already received 80% of the artwork to be featured in the book which means we can now focus on art working the crests for each club. Meanwhilst we'll be triple checking crest content to make sure we don't miss anything with input from fans, the clubs & across our other research channels with the aim to have a final prototype book by mid-November.
This final prototype will then be road tested, checked over with allowance for any final edits, amends, changes or additions before finally going to print in January. Hopefully, if this all goes to plan we'll have hard copies of the final product ready to be distributed to our Kickstarter funders by no later than the start of March.
With Volume 1, the risk is incredibly low. With our first book already produced, and the edits to be made for a reprint already confirmed we plan on being able to send this out in time for Christmas.
A huge challenge that hit us, had been getting direct, final information from each club included in the book. Getting across exactly what we're trying to achieve has been one of the hardest aspects of the project with some clubs simply not having assets to help us out with, we've had to fend for ourselves. All research carried out will be sent to each clubs contact details we already have, & fingers crossed as the project develops we will receive more help than we've had previously.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
