Critical Mass is a movie about a film critic who writes a poor review about a popular sci-fi movie based off a tween book series. After his review is printed, the die hard fans of the book come after him with a vengeance for his blasphemous review. Mark must escape the fanboys, and insure that his right to free speech is not taken away.
Critical Mass will be a short dark comedy, with aspirations to turn it into a feature length film upon successful marketing of the short. The short will be shot in March 2012, and released for a festival circuit run in the fall.
Critical Mass features several acclaimed filmmakers for its crew:
Writer: Tom Radovich
Tom most recently won the first prize in the short screenwriting competition for Columbia College's Written Image Awards. He is also the writer and director behind Inkjet, Alabama Jackson's Bad Boyfriend, and M.K. II, a trio of short films that have all enjoyed runs on the Chicagoland film festival circuit.
Producer: James Tracy
James is a freelance filmmaker from Aurora who has held a wide variety of roles for many different films. He was an assistant editor on All In, a 2006 film starring Michael Madsen, Dominique Swain, and Lou Gosset Jr. He has written, directed, and produced the shorts:
IronStag Kills Again- a low budget parody of cop and exploitation movies
One Question- a silent romantic comedy/drama about a teenager asking the girl of his dreams to the big dance
Fletch Eat Everything- an experimental claymation movie about a monster who keeps eating and eating.
Director of Photography: Kevin Brooks
"Storytelling has always been a part of my life and film is the outlet in which I like to express it. Starting at a young age I always had a love to be behind a camera. In pursuit of my dream I set out to accomplish just that. Columbia College Chicago did just that for me. My stay there was a great one to say the least. Having a thirst for film and video I tried my hand in just about every area and aspect of production. Cinematography and editing were the two things that I chose to stick with. While there, I worked on many short narrative films while also thrusting myself into the world of documentary. A video I had the privilege to work on even landed itself on the Columbia Sports home page and still resides there. I continue to stay busy in the world of film in any way that I can. There are many stories that have been left untold, I aim to tell them."
We are looking to raise a budget for Critical Mass so that there can be a decent production value for the film. Funds raised will go toward the equipment needed to make this look sharp. While nobody on this production will be paid a big salary, it is etiquette to cover transportation and food for everybody who works on the film, so some funds will be placed towards that. We already own a decent amount of equipment, hence the low overall budget.
We want to make Critical Mass a film for everybody who believes in free speech and that fact that we can have a difference in opinions. Critical Mass will be a comedy, but also a necessary commentary on our society. With the recent trend of blockbuster movies being adapted from teen book series, the time is NOW for a movie like this to be made!
What We Need & What You Get
We are looking to accumulate an overall budget of $2,000 from various sources. This will enable us to film the movie in HD, design costumes, and build strong locations. We already own a decent amount of our own equipment, so the budget will be primarily used for production design, including costumes, props, and set design. Funding will also help cover Critical Mass's distribution to the public. This budget is fairly low for a short of this stature, because we already have a decent amount of equipment already. We want to hit our goal of $1,500 here to keep our overall funding plan on track. Any extra will be put to the use of pushing our film further into the public eye. Attaining our funding goal is key to making Critical Mass have to feel of a true theatrical film.
There are certain perks extended for donating to our film! please check out the perks section below.
