Great Shawn, glad to hear it. By the way, if anyone comes up with a new use for the Wiretap PLEASE let me know about it. Would also love to get stories and pictures of the Wiretap in use from around the world. You can email me at email@example.com
My wiretap came today! AM SO HAPPY WITH IT! SO SOLID AND RIGID!! Thanks so much! works as it said!
Thanks for your feedback. Valid points all round. I looked at building a little more relief at the base of the connector, but after trying a few different phone models, and cases, decided adding more to the overall length of the splitter wasn't worth it, and made it feel more protracted and susceptible to breakage. I didn't want to make The Wiretap any longer than I absolutely had to.
Alas there will always be phones/cases where the relief provided won't be sufficient.
(The Square reader has 3mm of relief from 14mm of exposed connector, the Wiretap has 1mm on 14.5mm of exposed connector, so 1.5mm less than the Square reader.)
With regard to the audio behavior, you're absolutely right, the Square app does pause the music on your iPod when you swipe a card. However, the Wiretap lets you leave everything plugged in, in a fixed set up.
Moreover, now the Wiretap exists I'm hoping more app designers factor dual audio functionality, and enable audio output while they're using audio in, or vice-versa.
There would have been no reason before to enable it, now, with The Wiretap, there is.
I am sending a couple Wiretaps to Square with an outline of my ideas. I believe they could allow the dual use of the device if they so wished, and that it would even be a selling point for them.
It is my firm belief that (as smart phones become ubiquitous, and are used for a wider range of things) we will see more apps designed with versatility in mind. We could perhaps even instigate an iOS change that enabled decoupling of the audio in and out privileges.
Dare to dream!
Thanks, James. I received my first-run units today in the mail. First off, they are very solidly built and have some nice weight to them. I DID run into a few issues, though.
First, while my Square snaps into my phone WITH it's case (a CASEMATE), the Wiretap will not quite go down far enough to lock in and allow anything plugged into it to be recognized. If I take the case off, it works fine...though that sort of defeats the convenience factor.
Secondly, when I plug in the Square to the mic input of the Wiretap and headphones into the other port, I can play songs from the iPod/music player fine through the headphones. However, as soon as I open or switch to the Square app, the music is stopped. I have to close/hide the Square app and then reopen the iPod/music player and hit Play again to resume output. According to the main project page, this sort of scenario was supposed to be supported so that merchants could play music AND take CC payments simultaneously. Having the music turn off every time you take a payment and having to resume the play manually every time is not quite what I had in mind.
Overall, I am pretty pleased with these and have many other uses in mind. However, you might want to test out the Square app scenario and you might consider a design modification so that the plug on the end is extended down a bit further so it can clear phone cases. If you have one of the (absolutely free) Square readers, you will see what I am talking about. There is an extension protruding through the bottom of the Square that lengthens the overall plug while still clearing most phone case cutouts for the jack.
Thanks for having run a smooth and pain-free project. It's a bonus that you are already set up for production and fulfillment. Also, while I'm in the U.S. myself, I see the chaos that comes up for international backers on most other projects. There is inevitably a period where an update goes out about adding to their pledge for shipping, confusion about how, people who miss doing so before funding closes, a Paypal account has to be set up to take shipping payments, and on and on and on. Your approach alleviates all of that. Yes, you may have miscalculated those costs at first, but at least you honored existing pledges and moved onward. Not every owner has been so scrupulous. Anyway, if other projects baked in the shipping via separate pledges for domestic and international, things would be a so much less confusing for folks.
Thanks again... Look forward to finding multiple uses (plenty already in my head) for your simple little product.
Hi James, Sent you a message :) do read it :)
Exactly correct Shawn. It will work as a normal headphone splitter too.
The Microphone with headphone port is for earpiece with Mic right? while the other one is just a headphone port? right about that? so i can plug in my earpiece to the microphone with headphone port and the another to voice recorder?
Hi Shawn, yup! The $20 pledge will ship overseas. Thanks!
Hi! I backed your project as I think it's really interesting and I need something like this I pledge $20 and would like to know if it ships to Singapore.
Garageband for the iPhone just came out, so this splitter will be invaluable to record with my guitar and monitor myself at the same time!
WOW....this looks AWESOME... I have wanted to use this with my Square for SO long...!
