Note: Now that the campaign's over, you can find Luxi For All at esdevices.com.
What is Luxi For All?
Luxi For All is a diffusion dome attachment for your mobile device's front-facing camera. When paired with the Luxi app (currently on iOS), Luxi For All will help you determine the best settings for your DSLR or other camera, so you can take perfectly exposed pictures. It's just like one of those fancy old-school light meters, but at a far better price. And because it works with the gadget you already have in your pocket, it's way more convenient!
Why do I need it?
"I already have a light meter built into my camera; why do I need a separate device?"
The light meter built into cameras measures reflected light. A reflected light meter shows an appropriate setting for an average of the whole scene. If you are taking a picture of a scene that does has neither an average, nor internally consistent lighting situation, your camera's built-in light meter will not be accurate. Usually, that causes an overexposed or underexposed picture.
Sunset portraits and other pictures with strong back-lighting are common situations, and can be aided by using an incident light meter like Luxi For All.
"My light meter app already has an incident mode. Why would I need Luxi For All?"
It is important to capture all of the light falling on your subject. Luxi For All is designed to work just like a professional incident light meter which can capture light from a 180° angle. When using a light meter app without Luxi For All, the iPhone camera only receives light from a limited angle which means it doesn't capture all the light. This will produce readings that are both inconsistent and inaccurate. The Luxi For All effectively captures and averages all the incident light.
How to use it
Readings taken with Luxi For All can be entered directly into your DSLR or any camera with a manual settings mode.
We've put together a comprehensive User's Guide for the original Luxi; despite the physical differences between it and Luxi For All, much of the information in the guide will apply equally to both versions. There will be an update to the Guide before Luxi For All ships.
In both our initial testing of Luxi For All and in nearly a year of experience with the original Luxi attachment, we have found the readings provided by iPhone apps paired with our devices to be highly comparable to readings taken with those old-school purpose-built light meters. The following picture shows a Luxi For All side-by-side with a relatively low-end Minolta Auto Meter IV F handheld light meter under even lighting conditions.
Professional videographer / cinematographer Adam Wilt's really thorough examination of our original Luxi demonstrates just how accurate our device's readings are.
Will it work with my device?
Luxi For All builds upon the design of the original Luxi to bring convenient, inexpensive light metering to everybody who owns a mobile device. While the original Luxi was designed specifically for iPhone, Luxi For All will fit onto almost any of your gadgets with front-facing cameras: Android phones and tablets, iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad...you name it. Even if your device is inside a case!
We'll be updating our iOS app to work with iPad and iPod Touch, and an Android version is in the works as well. Other developers will able to support Luxi For All on other platforms, so we hope that Windows Phone, Blackberry, and others will be supported soon.
We need your help!
We want to help everybody have access to the tools required to take great photos--not just the professionals. Photography can be an expensive pursuit, but we don't think things necessarily need to be that way. Smartphones and tablets have empowered us to create in ways we never would have imagined just a few years ago, and we want to help continue that revolution. With your help, we can make that wish a reality.
Bringing a new product to market--even a new version of a tested idea, like Luxi For All--is an expensive and tricky business. Your pledge will not only help us cover the costs of research, development, and manufacture; it will also help us spread the word and get the product out into the world. Tell your photographer friends! Post our campaign on your Facebook page! Help us make light meters available to far more people than ever before!
Production and Fulfillment Plan
We already have some great prototypes, and we're in the process of refining them in advance of requesting factory prototypes and having the tooling done. We're already in the process of getting this product made, in other words.
Our current plan is to ship in August of 2014, and we have every reason to believe that this goal is reachable. Manufacturing a product is hard, however, and there may or may not be some delays. Rest assured that we'll be working tirelessly to fulfill your rewards as soon as humanly possible.
Note: Luxi For All is patent pending and will retail for $29.95 (iPhone not included). iPhone, Apple, and Apple logo are registered trademarks of Apple Inc. Minolta is a registered trademark of Konica Minolta.

Risks and challenges
Manufacturing & Design Partners:
We are collaborating once again with Sparkfactor Design on this project, and they've put together some amazing prototypes which look and work great. We are also working with the same great manufacturer who helped us bring the original Luxi to market, and they're ready to go as soon as we are.
Manufacturing consumer products can be a tricky process, and delays may or may not arise along the way. We'll be working tirelessly to meet our deadlines, and to keep out backers informed about the challenges and triumphs we encounter.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
