Backbeater®️ is the world's most advanced drum metronome.
Musicians playing in a band often interpret tempo differently. Budding musicians and music students sometimes find it difficult to maintain tempo. Traditional metronomes can help address these challenges; however, they are often difficult to use, off-putting, and unnecessarily fiddly—not to mention expensive for what they attempt to accomplish.
Here at Makers4Good, we figured there must be a better way. Our goal was to design a product that would correctly monitor tempo, display it clearly, and make it easy to use in the playing environments of modern drummers. By optimizing your mobile device’s large screen and interface, we’ve managed to make what we believe is a much better, clearer, cheaper, more sensitive, and more versatile product than those previously available.
Best of all, Makers4Good donates its profits to charities, including music education charities. You get a great tempo monitoring system, and you help us help music educators and their students.
With your help, we'll be able to:
- Release a brand new design of our sensor hardware which will be more durable and more reliable than ever;
- Finish development of the Android version of our app;
- Ensure complete integration between our existing iOS app and the new sensor hardware.
On top of the primary tempo-feedback feature, the app also includes:
- Screen tap feature (for discreet tempo calibration)
- 4 different tempo averaging windows
- Drift indicator (show how much the last beat varied from the running average)
- Built-in (audible) metronome with 4 different sounds
- Access to the device’s music library
- Adjustable sensor sensitivity (you can set it to ignore your ghost notes)
- Large digital read-outs (great if your producer is fond of smoke-machines)
- Beats per strike setting for musical accuracy
Included With Each Backbeater:
Our Wiretap audio splitter gives your device an extra headphone jack in addition to the mic/headphone combo jack—which lets you connect the Backbeater sensor to your mobile device and use a pair of headphones or earbuds at the same time.
Included With Backbeater Plus:
Our app is made to be easily readable while you're playing at your kit. For best results, we recommend mounting your phone on your hi-hat stand for easy accessibility. There are a number of phone mounts that can be used for this, but we wanted to offer a great solution to our Kickstarter backers alongside the standard Backbeater configuration. We have partnered with accessory manufacturer Grifiti to offer their Nootle smartphone mounts with all of our Backbeater Deluxe rewards!
Backbeater allows drummers to monitor their tempo: either freestyle, or with a reference tempo. The Backbeater metronome can be set to your rhythm. It can discreetly tell you a tempo you tap out, and it can store lists of tempos, for when you're playing live.
Backbeater consists of both hardware and software, and works with your iOS or Android smartphone. Note: our iOS app is now available, and the Android version will be released before your rewards ship to you this Fall.
Mounting the Sensor
Our tempo sensor mounts directly to your snare drum with existing hardware—it fits under one of the lugs that encircle your snare's rim. You simply mount and connect to your smartphone as follows.
Using the App
Our app (available now for iOS, Android version coming soon) is easy to use, and shows you all you need to know about your tempo on one screen. This data is large and easily viewed while playing your kit.
The Beat Goes On
At Makers4Good, every product we design is focused on fulfilling a need and creating social good. While our business is built on giving and all profits are donated to charities, Kickstarter asks us to clarify that Kickstarter pledges are not donated to charity. They will be used to complete this version of Backbeater.
We understand that cultivating, encouraging, and embracing opportunities that foster the advancement and diversification of music and people is vital to our world. Your Kickstarter support touches lives far and wide, helping to make the world a better place. Together, through creating Backbeater, we help make the world a better place.
Risks and challenges
No hardware project is exempt from the challenges inherent in manufacturing a product at scale and distributing it—these kinds of projects can certainly be difficult. We're ready to meet these challenges head-on, having run several successful campaigns previously, and having delivered thousands of units to backers and customers around the world since 2012.We have a long history of developing products and helping nonprofits.
Our new design is practically ready to be manufactured—we just need your support in order to kick off the process!
We have a wealth of experience both in designing products and in managing the manufacturing process.
Finally, we have been offering a previous version of Backbeater for several years. We know the market, and we know what working drummers want in a tempo monitor.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
