Bryan Davis' books have become bestsellers in the field of youth Christian fantasy. He is the author of the fantasy series: Dragons in our Midst. The first book in that series is Raising Dragons.
Raising Dragons is about a boy who learns of his dragon past and a girl has known of hers for years. They combine their faith, courage, and love to overcome an evil slayer who seeks to bring an end to dragon heritage, forever.
Fans have been enjoying this story for almost a decade! Now ten years after the initial publication, a graphic novel adaptation will be released for both new and old fans alike.
I have been drawing cartoons and comics ever since I was a boy. God has given me a gift in the visual arts, and I dreamed of the day I can use my gifts to honor Him and serve others. I was so excited to be given this opportunity and responsibility. This is a very special project for my entire family and I.
- The Raising Dragons manuscript has been adapted by my wife, Shiloh J Ville.
- The book will consist of 150 pages of full color sequential artwork.
- The dimensions of the book will be US Standard, 6" x 9".
- The author himself has input in every step of the process, ensuring you will receive an OFFICIAL adaptation of his story, not just a fan-made project.
THE GRAPHIC NOVEL
This project is not starting from square one. I already have a good amount of work already accomplished. The manuscript has already been written and finalized by Bryan Davis. The primary character designs have been finished. Finally, most of the thumbnail page layouts have already been penciled.
But there is still a lot more to be done. The art boards have to be penciled, inked, colored, and finally text added. While the first part of the process will be done with traditional media (pencils), I will finalize each page digitally.
The tools I will be using include:
- BlueLineArt Pro Series 3 ply 11" x 17" Brite White Boards
- Pencil & Eraser
- Wacom Bambo Fun Tablet Pen
- Adobe Photoshop
- Manga Studio EX 4
The entire graphic novel will take a lot of work and time. If the minimum amount of funding is raised through Kickstarter, I anticipate the graphic novel will be done by the end of Summer, 2014. If the goal is not met, it will be much more difficult for me to meet this deadline.
DISTRIBUTION OF FUNDS
The funds raised for this project will be used for the following items:
- Art Boards
- A new Scanner (large enough for the 11" x 17" art boards)
- Licenses for commercial comic book fonts
- Printing costs for initial printing of books (1,000+)
- Financial support as I work from home.
If the $15,000 goal is met then I will immediately start working on the final pages of the book. I will devote 8 hours a day, 5 days a week on this project, like a full time job. I will keep all supporters updated periodically with my progress, and of course if you pledge $20 or more you are eligible for the 25 page preview.
Should the funding from Kickstarter exceed our goal, the excess will be set aside for further printing of books as well as funding the next graphic novel in the series, THE CANDLESTONE.
Risks and challenges
Bryan Davis officially commissioned me for this project in November of 2012. There is very little risk because the funds from Kickstarter will allow me to focus my work and dedicate my time for this project until completion.
Technically speaking, if the funding minimum is not met the graphic novel will still be completed, but at a much slower pace. This is an opportunity for you not only to be part of this project with me, but also to receive some one-of-a-kind rewards that you will not find anywhere else.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
