About this project
We are proud to launch the Jakhals watch collection, our first product, carefully designed in Antwerp.
With your support during this pre-order campaign, we can start production and worldwide delivery of our watches.
A closer look
We use quality cellulose acetate crafted by Mazzucchelli 1849, a family-owned Italian company. The material is renowned for its use in the iconic sunglasses with tortoise look. Since every piece is hand-finished, every watch is a unique piece of art.
We chose fine-grain Italian leather straps, that are vegetable tanned, and age beautifully over time.
Our watch case is made of high-quality stainless steel with a brushed finish. The dial is detailed with fine prints and is covered with scratch resistant and clear sapphire crystal glass.
Jakhals Collection 01 features 5 stainless steel watches. We carefully selected 5 unique acetate rings to match this pure stainless steel colour. You can choose between a vegetable tanned leather strap or a stainless steel Milanese strap.
Jakhals Collection 02 features 3 stainless steel watches with PVD plating in gold, rose gold, and gunmetal black. We carefully matched each PVD colour with a unique acetate ring. You can choose between a vegetable tanned leather strap or a stainless steel Milanese strap with PVD plating.
As product designers and concept developers, we are both very passionate about materials and how they interact with our immediate surroundings. That is why, during our design journey, we stumbled upon an exceptional material called acetate.
Cellulose acetate is a cotton-based plastic that is hypoallergenic. In the 1940’s it was first used to create cutting-edge eyewear frames. For almost a century, acetate has proven itself as a timeless material in the fashion world. Today, this material is highly valued by consumers as well as manufacturers because of its quality and uniqueness.
The acetate sheets, which are handcrafted, are created by combining multiple layers of this material, thereby creating original and intriguing patterns. Mazzucchelli 1849, a family-owned business of six generations, is considered one of the world’s best suppliers of acetate. The acetate we use on our watch, was handpicked by us at their factory in Italy.
In order to get a better view of the production of acetate, please take a look at the video below, which has been made available to us by Mazzucchelli 1849.
Inspired by this craftsmanship, we set out to design a homage to a classic watch. Our watch features honest lines with pure materials and unique patterns.

Let us introduce ourselves
We are Jeroen Depuydt and Nicolas Faes, founders of Jakhals, an independent design brand based in Antwerp, Belgium. Both industrial designers, we complement each other with careers in product design and marketing as well as human-centred design.
Some years ago, we started dreaming of creating objects; objects which don’t steal the moment, but enhance the experience of our daily lives. These past few months, we’ve worked blood, sweat and tears on realising this vision.
Thank you for backing us.

Risks and challenges
For months, we communicated with our manufacturing partners to overcome the technical challenges we faced whilst designing and producing an aesthetically refined watch. After investing in tooling, we are proud and confident to show you our first production samples pictured above.
With Jakhals, we were able to bring together reliable supply and manufacturing partners, with whom we keep close ties.
With regards to the delivery of our watches, we made conservative estimates and we promise regular updates on our progress.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
