HELLO! Thank you for being here, thank you for taking the time to read a bit more about my project.
I'm Jake! A musician and music teacher living in Portland, OR. I currently play solo and with a full band around the Portland metro area, when I'm not teaching amazing students at the non-profit Ethos music center.
After two previous solo releases I'm ready to get back in the studio and make some magic. As mentioned in the video, the Goners EP (2016) did really well having gone into the studio with a bit more of a budget, and working with a producer to hone the tracks. The result: over a 100K plays across all streaming services and a handful of national blog and playlist features. However, my 2017 release, The Rodeo, did not do so hot; I made the whole thing for $400 in off hours when I wasn't working or in school. Though it did gain some local press, it didn't reach as far a its predecessor.
SO, I'm putting my pride on the shelf, and asking for help in making what I truly believe to be the best music of my life.
I would not be doing this if I didn't really believe in these songs. It is my faith in these songs that has led me here: to spending every waking moment asking for help in bringing them to life.
As it stands I have chosen 5 songs to record. Yet, depending on total funding by the end of this campaign, the final product will be anywhere from 5 to 8 songs.
The songs tell stories of love, self-love, existential dread, appreciation, resilience, and action. They range from quiet singer-songwriter, to feel-good indie-pop, to straight up rock n' roll.
No man is an island. I'll be working with an amazingly talented group to make sure that every part of this project is professionally crafted.
The project is being executive produced and guided by Dominik Schmidt of ROLA Music. I'll be tracking with three amazing musicians (drums, bass, keys) at one of Portland's finest, intimate studios: the Map Room.
Though $6,000 may seem like a lot of money for a 5-8 song release, every dollar raised is going to paying the studio, the recording engineer, and the musicians during the recording process, as well as for mixing, mastering, and fulfilling rewards and kickstarter fees.
With every dollar raised over 6K, we get closer to being able to record more songs, potentially booking another day or two in the studio and hitting that 8 song mark.
June: Fulfilling lessons and experiential rewards. Rehearsing for studio.
July: Fulfilling lessons and some rewards, rehearsing, recording begins.
August: Recording, mixing, mastering.
September: Album is completed, physical production begins.
October: Physical album is completed. First music is released.
November: Album is released. Fulfillment of physical rewards begins.
December: Fulfillment of all rewards is complete. I take a deep breath.
**Note to self: everything always takes longer than expected; dates are subject to change and patience is key**
This campaign isn't about asking for donations, its about asking for an exchange. It's about asking what I can do to earn your [financial] support. Maybe it's a copy of the finished product, maybe it's paying me back for listens on Spotify or Soundcloud, maybe it's a bundle of physical goods related to the album that showcase the journey - but it doesn't end there, I have much more to offer :)
Being a music teacher, I want to put my skill-set to use in raising money for this album, offering up my time and expertise in teaching guitar, songwriting, music theory, and piano.Additionally, in the age of music streaming and easy downloads, I'm offering many rewards that will offer a unique experience to those who support the music. From house shows and listening parties, to studio tours and philanthropic collaboration, there are many ways to engage with me and this project.
If you have an idea of something that would earn your support that isn't on this list, send me a message! I'd love to figure out a fair exchange in which everyone wins.
Most nights of the week I lose sleep thinking about how amazing this will be - music that I truly believe in, created by people that believe in me and my vision.
I will leave you with an email I recently received to show you that this actually matters; that making music reaches people all over the world, and that my music has a positive impact on real people's lives.
THANK YOU! For your help, for your time, for your belief in me.
Hello, My name is Aaron O’Connell and I’m wondering if you could provide me with a tab for Goners. My fiancée and I are getting married in October and we have two of our friends playing the ceremonial music. We both fell in love with Goners when we heard it and now Tessa wants it to be playing while she’s walking down the isle. My friends and I have searched for the tab online, but haven’t had any luck. Hope you can help and hope to hear from you soon. Cheers! Aaron
Risks and challenges
The biggest risk and challenge is that $6,000 might still not be enough. That is the bare minimum amount that needs to be raised in order for me to execute this project. Given that time and money always seem to go more quickly than one would like - I expect that I'll still have to go out of pocket when all is said and done.
IDEALLY, if I raised $8,000 I could more comfortably count on recording 6-8 songs and having a bit of dough left over for promotion and miscellany.
After recording, promotion and distribution remain a question, largely because that depends on the finished product.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
