The retro trading card game! Take things back to a time when games were simpler but still had a good amount of complexity.

About this project

Pixel Battlers is a retro trading card game which is heavily influenced by the style of late 80s to early 90s video games graphics.

In Pixel Battlers players use decks made up of a combination of Character Cards, Item Cards, and Power Cards to battle for control of Hills. The first player to gain control of all three Hills for a complete turn or the first player to have 15 points gained from controlling hills throughout the game wins.

When Pixel Battlers launches there will be two starter decks to choose from; "Champions of Hero Castle" and "Nightmares of Horror Town." Both starter decks come with 50 cards that are unique & exclusive to that deck and both starter decks have their own strengths' and weaknesses' that come with it.

This deck comes with 25 Unique Hero themed Character Cards, 15 Unique Item Cards, and 10 Unique Power Cards. All Exclusive to the Champions of Hero Castle starter deck.

This deck comes with 25 Unique Horror themed Character Cards, 15 Unique Item Cards, and 10 Unique Power Cards. All Exclusive to the Nightmares of Horror Town starter deck.

Two expansion packs are also available if you want to boost the strength of your deck. Both expansion packs come with 18 unique cards, so if you want to add them all to your deck you'll need to first remove some cards from your deck since decks are made up of 45-60 cards.

The Arena: The Arena is the playing area for Pixel Battlers. This is where a majority of the action happens. You and your opponent both have sides of the field where each of your respective cards are placed.

Your side of the Arena: This side of the Arena is where all the cards you control are placed.

Your opponent's side of the Arena: This side of the Arena is where all the cards your opponent controls are placed.

Hills: There are three of these in between the players sides of the Arena and are what the players need to win the game. Character Cards are placed here so the player can score points. A Player scores one point for every complete turn a Character Card controls a Hill. The more Character Cards a player has controlling the Hills, the more points they earn per turn. In order for a Character card to be placed in a Hill, it must be placed there from the hand or it must attack from the Reserve. Once in a Hill it can only defend, it cannot attack again, and it cannot attach any Item Cards or absorb any Character Cards.

Deck: Where the deck is placed that the player draws from. Players each draw one card a turn from their decks.

Discard Pile: When a card is defeated or done being used it is sent to the discard pile.

Reserve: Each player has three of these. This is where Character Cards can be placed while waiting to attack a hill. Only one Character Card can be placed in a Reserve per turn. While a Character Card is in the Reserve it can Absorb and Attach up to two cards. When a Character Card attacks the Hill from the Reserve, that Character Card MUST move into the Hill while attacking. It cannot stay in the Reserve.

Power Reserve: Certain Power Cards can affect game play for more than one turn. When they do, they are placed in the Power Reserve. Only one Power Card can be in the your Power Reserve at a time.

Character Cards are the blue cards. They are essential to Pixel Battlers. They are used to capture Hills, attach item cards, and absorb other character cards. Most Character Cards have skills which give them an advantage in battle. Some skills are by the time of day or other real world things. Character Cards in a players Reserve can also absorb other Character Cards in that same players reserve to gain their AP and HP.

Card Name: The card name is always in the top left corner. Some Character Cards with specific names can get bonus Skills when attached with certain Item Cards.

Description: The description describes what the Character Card can do. Some Character Cards have Skills which can devastate an opponent.

Image: This is where the Character is shown.

Attack Points: This is the Character Cards strength. It is used when they attack other Character Cards. If the Attacking Character Card's Attack Points are Higher than the defending Character Card's Health Points then the defending Character Card is sent to the Discard Pile.

Health Points: This is the Character Cards Health. It is used when they are on a Hill defending. If the Defending Character Card's Health Points are higher than the attacking Character Card's Attack Points then the attacking Character Card is sent to the Discard Pile, and the defending Character remains in control of the Hill.

Turn Counter: Some Character Cards have a Turn Counter. The Turn Counter is in the top right corner of a character Card. The number that the turn counter says is the number of turns a Character Card must remain in the Reserve before attacking or attaching any cards. So if the Turn Counter says X2, the Character Card must remain in the reserve for 2 turns. The turn the Character Card is placed in the Reserve counts as the 1st turn.

Item Cards are the green cards. They are attached to Character Cards in order to make them stronger. Some item cards can even give Character Cards additional skills. Any number of Item Cards can be attached to Character Cards in the Reserve per turn, the Character Card attachment limit still remains though. If a Character Card is attacking a Hill or placed on a Hill from the Hand it can do so with Item Cards attached.

Card Name:Just like with the Character Cards, the card name remains in the top left corner of the card.

Description: The description describes what the Item Card can do. Some Item Cards have Skills which are transferred over to the Character Card when attached.

Image: This is where the item is shown. Item Card images all show the item in the front of a powered up looking background.

Attack Points: Unlike Character Cards, the Item Cards AP has a "+" or "-" next to it, meaning the Character Card gains that much AP or Loses that much AP depending on if there is a "+" or "-" next to it when the Item Card is being attached.

Health Points: Also unlike Character Cards, the Item Cards HP has a "+" or "-" next to it, meaning the Character Card gains that much HP or Loses that much HP depending on if there is a "+" or "-" next to it when the Item Card is being attached.

Power cards are the red cards. When used they can give the user an advantage over their opponent. Power cards can be played from the hand and do not need to be placed in the reserve or on a hill unless noted on the card.

Card Name: Just like with the Character Cards and Item Cards, the card name remains in the top left corner of the card.

Description: The description describes what the power card can do. Most Power Cards have powers outside of making a Character Card stronger. Power Cards can allow you to draw more cards, get cards out of the discard pile and more. Some Power Cards can give you a crucial advantage over an opponent.

Image: Unlike the character cards and item cards, the Power Card images are made using fewer pixels giving the images a graphical style similar to the video games of the mid to late 80s.

In order for a player to win they must control all 3 Hills for one complete turn. Players can also win by reaching 15 points. Points are gained for every compete turn that a players Character Cards control a Hill. 1 Point per Hill controlled per complete turn. So it is possible to gain up to 3 points a turn, depending on how many Hills a player controls.

Before starting a game you should shuffle your deck followed by cutting your opponent's deck. After the decks are shuffled and cut they are placed in each players respective deck location.

After that players see who goes first. This can be done with rock-paper-scissors, flipping a coin, or rolling a dice. The winner decides who goes first.

Before the first player's turn both players draw 4 cards, with 1 additional card being drawn by each player at the beginning of their respective turns.

Each turn is separated into 3 parts.

The Beginning: This is when the player who's turn it is draws a card.

The Middle: This is when players can place their Character Cards in the Reserve, Attach Cards, and attack the Hills. A player can only place 1 Character Card in the Reserve a turn and can only attack a hill with a Character Card once per turn. If a player places a Character Card on a Hill from the hand, that counts as a placement and an attack.

The End: This is when the player who's turn it is declares that their turn is over and allows their opponent to begin their turn.

Risks and challenges

Pixel Battlers has risks and challenges. The risks are just putting so much time and effort into it, and there being chances of it not succeeding and reaching it's $2,500 goal. The challenges are just trying to get the pixelated graphics and the game play as perfect as possible. When I don't feel that the graphics or certain aspects of the game play are not up to par they are redesigned and changed.
If some sort of setback does arise it will be a delay in the shipping date which I do not imagine happening since Pixel Battlers about 80% complete. Now it is just mainly doing some final designs, checking for spelling errors, balancing card skills, and ordering deck after deck to make sure the card colors are not too dark or too light to ensure that you receive the best possible product.
