Dev Tees is a line of t-shirts for developers, programmers, and generally nerdy folk. Help me launch the inaugural line!

UPDATE: WOW! We reached full funding in just 29hrs! Thanks for all the support.

Here's my stretch goals:

$6,000 - REACHED!

$12,000 - REACHED! Hacker Tee v2 now available to choose from!

$15,000 - REACHED!!! Two new shirt designs that you get to vote on! That's additional shirt designs for a total of 9 shirt designs to choose from!

*NOTE: I had to eliminate the $24,000 stretch goal that I had here with the three additional designs because Kickstarter prohibits projects from offering more than 10 items for a reward level (at that point they call it mass distribution, which they no likey). But I think 9 shirt designs and a Hoodie is a great start, don't you? Don't worry, I'll continue to add more designs once the Dev Tees store is launched, after the Kickstarter project is over. At this point, any further funds I raise will help make this venture profitable (rather than just breaking even) and also allow me to put more time and effort into the Dev Tees website, and making the shirts better. THANKS EVERYONE!!!

About the Project

Today clothes are more than just protection from the elements and a way to cover our private parts. The clothes we wear say things about us: what music we listen to, what sports teams we like, what profession we are in, and what we are passionate about. Especially t-shirts.

That's why I want to make the Dev Tees collection: because developers are just as passionate about what they do as anybody else I know.

It's not that I think there aren't already any cool t-shirt for developers - it's just that there aren't enough. I have several fun ideas for shirts that announce your developer status to the world in really fun ways.

I want to get started with these six designs. I have tons of other concepts, but these are the most polished, and worthy of getting on a shirt ASAP.

About the Shirts

The shirts will be printed on a very light weight t-shirt from Tultex tees, and printed by Jakprints in Cleveland, Ohio. Jakprints has done lots of other shirts for me before, and they do a great job.

I'm planning to do the heather shirts on Tultex 0241, which is a cotton/poly blend, and is super cozy. It's a really light-weight shirt, so it's great for summer time, or for under your bundled clothes in the winter. Get more info on the tee here.

I'm planning to do the solid colors on Tultex 0202, also a very soft, light weight shirt. Specs on this shirt line can be found here.

I've purchased a sample batch of over a dozen of these shirts in all the colors I'm planning to print on, and have been washing them and wearing them over and over to test the quality. I'm really happy with how they wear. They hold up really well compared to other generic tees I've printed on before, or bought.

The goal for these shirts is to make something that is comfy enough that you'll want to go to bed in it, and fashionable enough that you'll want to wear it to a party or out on a date. That's the way I am with all the other shirts I've made anyway!

The Designs

The Rewards

Obviously, the main point of the rewards is to get the shirts in your hands! So while there are various reward levels, they are all basically just quantities of shirts. You can get one of each, you can mix and match, just pick the reward level that corresponds with the total number of shirts you want.

There's also stickers and buttons that will come with the shirts. In fact, starting at the 1 quantity shirt level you actually get ALL 6 STICKERS and ALL 6 BUTTONS. Pretty rad, huh?

Over and Above Goals

If the project goes over and above my goal by certain amounts, I'm going to look into adding some "extras" to make the shirts even more cool, like water based ink, sewn on labels on the sleeves, upgraded shirts, etc.

Special Thanks

Special thanks to my friend Talain Rayne for filming and editing my epic Kickstarter video.

A huge special thanks to my employer, appendTo, for giving me an amazing day job and giving me the freedom to pursue fun projects like this in my spare time.

Please Note:

- Apparel images here are mockups. Actual products may vary from the mockups in color tone, graphic size/positioning, etc. Number of inks used in the graphic, available colors, and brand of the apparel are all things that may change by the time the shirts go into production.
- Shipping estimate is just that - an estimate. If I receive more orders than anticipated by an extreme margin, it may delay shipment of the rewards.

FAQ

  • Sponsorship Level backers are companies or organizations that really want to show their support for the Dev Tees project, and get some recognition in return. The recognition will come in the form of a permanent presence on the Dev Tees website, http://devte.es .

Platinum level sponsors (5 available) will be featured in the site-wide footer (meaning every page of the site) with your logo and a link to your website, as well as being featured on the Dev Tees "About" page with the Kickstarter story.

Gold, Silver and Bronze sponsors will have their logo and a link to their site featured on the "About" page with the Kickstarter story, below the Platinum sponsors.

Dev Tees will include no regular ads, just content, so you as a sponsor will be the only external links on the site.

*Also, please note: while the actual t-shirt products are estimated for fulfillment by April, your recognition at the Dev Tees site may not be up by then, as the site may still be under development for a little while longer. Obviously it's in my best interest as well as yours to get the site up and operating as quickly as possible after the Kickstarter is over, but this is just an FYI that it may take a little longer, that's all.

  • I'm really sorry, but my printing vendor only prints on 2XL. Most of the generic shirts that you buy for this type of custom printing don't come in larger than 2XL anyway.

    Last updated:
  • YES! You can get 6 shirts of just 1 design if you really want! I don't care which shirts you choose, you can pick any combo of shirts/colors/sizes with your package of X amount of shirts.

If you're just backing for two shirts and you want two of the same shirt in different colors (or even in the same color) you can do that! Samy thing with any amount you back for.

  • // 2/22/13 UPDATE: We're going to offer ladies versions! Each design will have one version for the ladies!

These shirts are uni-sex so you can wear them too! Oh, you want ladies-cut shirts? Well, I'm going to look into it, but it depends on demand. Unfortunately when you are buying t-shirt printing, it all comes down to numbers. There are minimum quantities, etc., and since I anticipate demand will reflect the actual demographics of our field which is sadly male dominated, I'm not sure that i'll be able to afford to do a run of the tees in ladies sizes too.

But again, I will look into it if there is enough demand. And not to worry, even if the ladies' cut sizes aren't possible for the Kickstarter, I'll be expanding the product line after the Kickstarter project at the Dev Tees website at http://devte.es/, where I will offer products specifically for the ladies eventually.

Also, worth noting - my hesitation on offering ladies shirts for the initial Kickstarter run of shirts is a combination of 1) the lack of demand for ladies garments in the dev industry, and 2) my lack of personal experience producing garments for ladies. I want to make sure that the products I offer are top-notch, and I'd rather wait until I can do research on what it takes to make a great shirt for ladies than to simply offer something I have no experience in producing, and it turn out to be a disappointment for backers.

  • Yes, they may change some by the time they go to print (both the designs and the shirts). But generally speaking they do represent the shirt concept in it's "final draft" form. I may tweak the artwork for some of the designs (for example the Set Code Free design is going to be redone in actual chalk), but these are the concepts.

As for shirt colors offered, that may change too, but you will have a chance to select your official choice via a survey once the project is completed and before they are orded. By the time you get to pick your design and color, then it will be final.

  • Depends on the final brand I settle on (right now I'm leaning toward Tultex 0241Ultra Blend Tee, which is a really soft, 3.2oz (very lightweight and breathable) cotton/poly blend. They run a little bit slim, but not very much. If you like your shirts slim, then buy your normal size, but if you like them loose (like I do) then buy a size up.

  • I intend to do what's called "light hand plastisol." It's a very light hit of plastisol, which is almost like water based printing. The advantage here instead of just going water-based, is:

    1) Plastisol allows for greater color consistency than water based inks. Water based inks tend to fade or take on the color of the shirt, unless a discharge substrate is also used. But plastisol will avoid that whole issue.

    2) Plastisol can be used on poly blend-shirts, whereas most printers will only use water-based inks on 100% cotton. Since poly-blend shirts are a finer quality shirt, I don't want to sacrifice quality of the tee for the type of ink used.

    3) Plastisol printing is less expensive than water based inks, since they are far more common.

What's the difference between plastisol and water based???

Well the answer is that water based inks feel like the fabric of the shirt was dyed directly. Meaning, you cannot feel the print at all. Plastisol on the other hand, has a texture you can feel. Depending on the method of applying it, it can be very thick, or very thin. We are going for very thin here. Making it feel like part of the garment is the goal (aka a "light hand print").

  • Not exactly. I'm using a different printing vendor because - in short - the vendor I had used for a while messed up on the Hacker Tee project and made the white part of the design way thicker than they should have. So I'm working with a different vendor who I have used for many projects already (with CURE and appendTo) and they have consistently delivered excellent results.

So in summary, these shirts should have a much less thick feeling print, and they will also be printed on different tees than before. This time I'm going with either Tultex or Next Level tees, and they'll be just as soft but a little lighter weight.

  • Not through the Kickstarter because Kickstarter specifically prohibits arrangements like that. However if you message me, I'd be happy to arrange something outside of the Kickstarter project before the shirts go into production and help you get what you are looking for. :-)

  • Everything that has cotton will shrink in the dryer, so yes. But these shirts will be a poly/cotton blend, so they don't shrink very much. Also, in my experience, the amount of shrinkage (yes, I just said that) can even vary from shirt to shirt. But don't expect them to shrink too much.

Also it depends on what dryer settings you use. Please keep in mind that if you dry them on high with high heat, anything will shrink. Dry wisely, my friends.

  • Exchanges: If there was a mistake with your order that was my fault in fulfillment, I'll exchange your shirt for the correct one at no additional cost (however you will be responsible for shipping to send the shirt back to me). If you order the wrong size, or want a different color, or shirt design altogether, the following applies: If you send the shirt back to me, and pay for return shipping back to you for your exchange, and the shirt has not been worn at all (except to try it on) or is not damaged, then I'll exchange your shirt for only the cost of shipping back to you. Exchanges will only be honored for up to 30 days after you have received your shirt. After that point I will not accept any exchanges for any reason.

Returns: I'm sorry but there are no returns for refund given. If there was a problem with your order, see the exchange policy.

  • The answer is that it was an intentional decision for funding reasons. The short explanation goes something like this: Because of Kickstarter's fees (5%) and Amazon's fees (5%) and shipping built in for US backers, and the fact that this is for the initial inventory run with my shirt vendor, I would basically have to charge $35/shirt anyway to make it profitable at that backer level. So the answer is, you are paying for 1 shirt, and I'm just throwing in the stickers and buttons as a bonus, basically.

UPDATE: I have added a reward level (at the same price tier) for those that simply just don't want the stickers or buttons.

    Last updated:
  • Yes! You will be able to buy everything from http://devte.es/. In fact, why don't you head over right now and sign up for the mailing list so you can get notified when the products are live over there?

    Last updated:
  • Well it depends, but generally speaking I get about 90% of it. Kickstarter takes a 5% fee off the total, and Amazon payments takes about 5%.

    Last updated:
  • The same sizes as the t-shirts: Small through 2X-Large.

    Last updated:
  • That is correct - they are the same thing, except the cheaper spots are limited and will run out once enough people have pledged at that amount.

NOTE: the description says "6 SHIRTS + the Hoodie", but then I accidentally mentioned the 6 shirts again, leaving some backers confused to whether that was a total of 6 shirts, or a total of 12 shirts. To clarify, it's a total of 6 shirts, NOT 12. Unfortunately Kickstarter doesn't allow you to edit a reward description once it has any backers, so I'm just trying to clarify that now.

  • Good question. If you are new to Kickstarter then you may be wondering how you get to select which size/color combo and which designs you get for your reward level. Here's how it works:

After the project is fully funded, the Kickstarter software allows me to send out a form to backers to capture all of this information, and then it dumps it into a spreadsheet for me to use for fulfillment.

So the answer is: you'll get to select that after the project funding period is over.
