I recently was accepted to participate in the Fire Island Artist Residency this coming summer. The residency is only in its second year and it has already been gaining ground as an important program for queer artists. This residency is the first of its kind for the LGBTQ artists and introduces them to well established artists and to the arts community at large.
For the residency, I plan to transform a space filling it with abstract sculptures made of fabric and execute an endurance performance in the environment. I plan to develop a sculpture and performance piece similar to that of Mutual Caress II. This work is an amoebic sculpture made entirely of hand cut black paper. I was immersed in the sculpture while doing a sleeping performance with the aid of sleeping pills. For the residency, I plan to manipulate fabric instead of paper to create a new sculpture and installation environment and have more than one person occupying and performing in the space. I did something similar, My Big Dandy, and plan to make it more elaborate. I plan to do both indoor and outdoor performances throughout the island.
