What is ABCs for ABCs?
ABC is a term used to stand for American Born Chinese. I am an ABC. I grew up an avid reader and learner. Yet, it was not until my early twenties that I began to uncover Chinese American history and people. I realized how starved I was for stories about people like me. Every story I uncovered inspired me to learn more and share more. I move in this world better aware of what has come before me, and what will come in the future.
In this book, each letter of the alphabet stands for an important event or person related to ABC history. Each letter also features art pieces informed by Chinese and American art. It is my hope that this book can help to educate both the young and the old through stories about ABCs and other Asian Americans.
Who is the ABCs for?
This book isn’t just for ABCs. This book is for everyone. To fully understand the complexity of prejudice in America, we have to understand individuals’ overlapping identities and experiences. This book is for all genders, all races, all ethnicities, all beliefs, all sexualities. I hope people can see themselves in each snippet of history. I hope the individual stories for each letter inspire all kinds of people to keep building for a brighter, more inclusive world!
Why does ABCs for ABCs look like this?
Each letter has a calligraphy letter and a collage.
Chinese calligraphy is a highly prized traditional art form that reflects the power of the word in Chinese language. By performing my own calligraphy for this book, but in the English alphabet, I blend a long standing art form into a new style with both Chinese and American influences - just like an ABC.
Collage as an art form represents the mixture of different influences and cultures into one cohesive art piece. ABCs, Asian Americans, children of immigrants, and others have long lived in America as a mixture of different influences and cultures. That’s why I chose to use the collage as an art form for this book. I used traditional Chinese landscape and portrait paintings, photojournalism, political cartoons, and newspaper clippings to create individual art pieces for each letter of the alphabet.
Who is featured in ABCs for ABCs?
Incredible institutions, people, and historical events are featured in the book. All have been monumental in establishing ABC history and building a better world for all.

The entire book is already finished, illustrated, and written. All files are ready to go! I am already in contact with the printer, who is prepared for the order as soon as the project is funded. Printing a high quality, colored book is expensive. All funds will cover editing fees, printing fees, reward goodies, and Kickstarter fees.
Use of Funds
As activist Grace Lee Boggs said, “So much to do, so many to woo, and oh, we are so very few. As I go around the country these days, making new friends and talking to people about the challenges of the new millennium, I still recognize that we have much to do and many to woo, but I no longer feel that we are so very few.” Endless thank yous to the friends, family, and institutions that made this book possible.
Risks and challenges
There is always risk when embarking on a project of this sort:
- Not being funded
- Delayed shipping
- Poor quality printing
I have taken steps to alleviate these potential risks. The entire book is already finished, illustrated, and written. All files are ready to go, and I am already in contact with the printer, who is prepared for the order as soon as the project is funded. I have received samples of the book to ensure the highest quality printing. Lastly, I have given myself ample extra time in the schedule for any unexpected delays.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
