"Space Kitten here! Welcome to the fundraising project that will bring my best friend Space Grandma to Earth!"
HOLY Everything! We did it!
On my world, music and life are intimately woven together into a self-replicating fabric of beauty and light. It’s great to see that’s something we have in common with Earthlings! If we achieve a stretch goal of $20,000, we can weave together the joys of bringing more collaborators into the fold! Contribute now to help bring it all together!
An intergalactic Art Gallery and Tea House brought to Earth that will travel the globe, serve tea, and foster friendships. All aspects will be hosted by Space Grandma.
A dream project that started with a very small but important moment...
Making art has always been my most cherished activity, at the core of my being. But over the last several years an unknown illness had slowly crept up on me, unknowingly triggered by mold. Sick in bed, and increasingly preoccupied with my physical well-being to the exclusion of my creative well-being, I was losing sight of who I was. It was clear I needed to find some way to re-envision a future where I was not only healthier, but up and creating again. Happy again. In that moment, reflecting on small comforts I’d grown to appreciate during the course of my illness—tea and sci-fi, to be specific—I decided to make those comforts the focus for my next artistic endeavor. The project, Space Grandma’s Tea House at the Nexus of the Universe, became my artistic beacon, guiding me back to wellness.
Needing a character familiar with Earth to get this project into orbit, Space Kitten, who has been to this planet a few times already, has taken up the task of spreading the word.
In undertaking this project, I’m bringing together collaborators from around the world. Those who left an impression, shared a kindness, work well under pressure, and have unique talent and vision. This project is in part a way to bring them together to meet, some for the first time, some from across the globe. It is also an opportunity for them to inspire each other, and for me to cultivate and witness the fruits of a unique nexus of talents all while creating an intergalactic sanctuary. Beyond adding to the art and design, they will be helping in the construction, serving tea, playing music, and acting as alien characters to fully realize the intergalactic nature of the project.
Although its my first time leading a project, in the past twenty years I've helped in a support role on many art projects, so I know how to pick a crew that has what it takes to get the job done.
Tea House: The Tea House itself will be fashioned as a seven-sided UFO, with the simplicity of a 50's sci-fi saucer shape on the exterior and an intergalactic oasis on the interior. Filled with bubble windows for plants (thoughtfully picked for each region visited), art created by Jade Seven (or is it Space Grandma) and collaborators from over four countries, including a handmade Codex Nexus of stories and art, and serving seven herbal tea blends Space Grandma lovingly crafted. As the proprietor, Space Grandma will also host and serve in costume.
It is a place for beings from all over the multiverse to look at art, drink tea, play with interactive art pieces, and celebrate their friendships.
Tea Counter! The serving counter for the Tea House is designed to capture fluids and drain conveniently below. It will also have a small sink for easy clean up of all those tea cups!
Sprouts! Along with curated plants in the tea house, there will be jars of sprouts growing so there can be a tea party with tea sandwiches made from sprouts grown in the Tea House!
Robot Heart! There will be an interactive light-up robot heart that has a story all its own, for how it came into Space Grandma's life.
Tiny Aliens! A small case will be occupied by interactive light-up aliens; a tiny wonder to behold!
Codex: A 77 page collection of stories and art from the Space Grandma canon. Read of the rich adventures of Space Grandma and other characters that shape her world. You can see exerts from the Codex Nexus here.
Costume: As a space traveler Space Grandma needs a sturdy outfit to move thru worlds and showcase her particular interests.
Terrariums! Each sleeve caries a terrarium encasing tiny plant friends Space Grandma journeys with.
Tea holster! A clip on holster that holds 7 tubes, each with the perfect amount of tea for Space Grandma to brew a pot of tea for her friends.
1st Stage: During this phase there will be construction in both the United States and South Africa before debuting at Afrikaburn. We are starting fundraising early to allow time to get all the details right.
2nd Stage: The Tea House and accompanying materials will be shipped back to the United States and rebuilt at BurningMan. Having worked for many years in BurningMan DPW as well as with art projects, we want to share the Tea House with the event that inspired so much of this journey.
3rd Stage: This stage will be open ended. It involves bringing the Tea House to Santa Fe, New Mexico, the city that allowed me to heal enough to birth this project. The Tea House will be used as a pop-up gallery and community space. I can't wait to give back to the community here.
Digital Art: A set of 7 high res images from the Space Grandma canon.

The Kickstarter will cover materials and construction for the costume, Codex Nexus, and Tea House. There will be grant applications also submitted for both Afrikaburn and Burningman to handle additional costs as the project progresses.
In Santa Fe local local art grants are being pursued, so with each one the Tea House can live again!
• 27 % • Materials: We will be purchasing lumber and steel for the tea house frame & interior, ethically raised leather for cushions and costume, misc additional fabric for costume, native plants to the various regions we visit for costume terrariums and tea house, acrylic domes for the tea house windows, stools for tea house patrons, food for crew during events, raw herbal tea materials, and the many little items such as hardware, paint, etc.
• 22% • Crew Flights & Transportation: The primary way crew will be compensated for their time is by providing flights and transportation within the regions of the events. There will be flights from all over the globe to South Africa and then during the second stage to the United States.
• 19% • Material Freight: From the start I wanted the project to be reusable. It will be built from sturdy materials that can be shipped port to port and over land to the various destinations. The materials will weather and wear along with Space Grandma's journey across the Earth, creating a story all it's own.
• 14% • Labor: For crew who can't make it to the events, they will be paid fairly per their professional rates. I fully believe all crew and artist's time is valuable and committed to compensate fairly based on this ethos.
• 11% • Gifts & Shipping: This will cover the costs of producing the various rewards the the subsequent shipping to get them to contributors. Bring little pieces of Space Grandma's world into your home by contributing.
• 8% • Kickstarter Fees: Let us never forget processing and administration fees require to run and process a fundraising event. It's required but also a thank you for creating a platform for artists and others to do semi-autonomous fund raising.
Risks and challenges
This project has a lot of details with planning 3 stages at once. We're planning this far in advance as we want to get it right! With all this in mind the crew who have committed to this project all have previous experience and are ready to meet what challenges may arise!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
