JadedAid - a card game to save humanitarians

JadedAid

JadedAid is a new card game for world-weary development workers to be the cynicism they want to see in the world.

Our idea is simple: take the everyday frustrations of working for the Development Industrial Complex (the DIC) and turn them into a prescription for fun! JadedAid contains 100 cards that can be played alone or used in combination with similarly formatted games such as Cards Against Humanity* to make the fun last longer than Mugabe’s rule.

We are aiming for delivery by December 15, 2015.

Don’t miss out on buying your deck in time for Christmas delivery, and buy another to send to your favorite development worker without paid home leave.

How to Play

The “Donor” player will read out a red Indicator Card posing a question and “Implementer” players will submit their white Outcomes Cards with potential answers.

The Donor picks the winner they like the best, damn the evidence (or lack thereof). The winner then becomes the Donor for the next round. You win by amassing useless Indicator Cards, just like in real life!

You can play JadedAid separately or with a Cards Against Humanity card deck - JadedAid will integrate seamlessly with CAH. You should always play with copious indigenous alcohol and really good friends... or whomever you can find in your village that speaks English.

Game Development Process

Unlike most humanitarian projects, JadedAid is being co-developed through an extensive user-centered design process and a series of multi-stakeholder dialogues.

We are convening key Beltway Bandits and core beneficiaries in far flung field locations including London, Kampala, and Phnom Penh to ensure each card will achieve the intended outcomes - raucous laughter and stress relief better than a Southeast Asian happy ending. All backers can join us for card deck testing sessions in October that will feature unlimited libations and laughter.

Submit your card ideas for consideration. If we use your idea, we'll send you a free JadedAid deck or you can have a deck donated in your name to a needy aid worker who just lost danger pay.

What They Say

Every program team dreams of good press coverage for their program, best if the donor is mentioned in the first paragraph. JadedAid is no different. Enjoy what our peers say about our efforts:

  • “Sounds like it has a better funding model than most development projects.”The Guardian
  • "…Attendees of the United Nations’ next development summit may pass some of their idle hours with these cards in hand.”Foreign Policy
  • “It appears the three co-founders— who describe themselves as “an Indonesian-born Mexican-American, a white woman and an honest-to-God African” — have struck a nerve.”Devex
  • “Humanitarian and development practitioners have often treated their world weariness with a combination of alcohol, cynicism or despair…What if I told you there was a card game for that?”WhyDev
  • “Popular adult card game is getting a reboot!...I love this!”HuffPost Live
  • "This card game will end poverty.. by making fun of aid." - Humanosphere

Our Story

In the midst of yet another stakeholder engagement session with grassroots community members, Jessica Heinzelman, Teddy Ruge, and Wayan Vota realized that existing power structures were inhibiting the honest dialogue that could break through established power structures and create transformative change.

Therefore, we are utilizing Kickstarter to create an innovative public-private partnership that can can incubate and scale a sustainable user-centric approach for humanitarian aid workers: JadedAid.

JadedAid will incorporate cross-cutting themes like paternalism, chauvinism, and elitism to illuminate the inherent discrimination and dissonance in international development. This will galvanize peer groups and decision makers to recognize the failures of current approaches and create space for more holistic development programming.

Most importantly, JadedAid is brought to you by a diverse group including an Indonesian-born Mexican-American, a white woman and an honest-to-God African that is counting on the sales from the Kickstarter to pay the school fees for his entire extended family... well, not really. He wants a new iPhone 6s. Unlocked.

In short, we are gonna take the piss out of everything we all love to hate about our industry. Maybe that will help us improve it. Or just be a great drinking game. Regardless, it's gonna be an adventure for everyone!

Thanks for reading this far down our Kickstarter page. As a thanks, here is Jessica's take on the JadedAid adventure. Enjoy!

Risks and challenges

Jessica Heinzelman, Teddy Ruge, and Wayan Vota are accomplished experts in biting satire on the aid industry and we are excited to deliver stinging critique to one and all in international development.

Yet, we could fail. We could just blow all the money on hookers and coke, and never call you back. Or we could blow right past our Christmas shipping goal with a no-cost extension. Worst of all, we could make a lame game that just blows. And you’ll never let us forget it. Just like all those other donors we disappoint with our tardy quarterly reports.

If we do cock it up, know that we'll be first to admit our failures and give you a glorious show at the next Fail Festival.
