The project is my professionally-released debut CD entitled Transcension. (For examples of my previous demo recording work, checkout http://www.jadambriggs.com/audio.html.) For my first CD, I wanted to record pieces that I not only enjoy, but also works that I feel bring out the strongest emotions in my playing. The pieces included on this album are linked through the common theme of human mortality, the idea of the ethereal spirit, and the potential of an afterlife. They include the title track Transcension by Michael Albaugh, Sonata for alto saxophone and piano by William Albright, Sequenza IXb by Luciano Berio, Tangled Loops by Jason Eckardt, and Distances Within Me by John Anthony Lennon.
I want to do something different with this recording that may make it more accessible to a larger audience. I would like to record tracks that include commentary on the pieces themselves while the recordings are being played underneath. The commentary would be about the pieces themselves, how the performers go about working on these pieces and what they are thinking about while performing them, the technical aspects of the pieces, as well as any other relevant information that might help general audiences connect to these highly contemporary works. These tracks would be in conjunction with the basic recordings themselves, so it would be similar to a DVD, but the commentary tracks would be released solely online because otherwise it would require a second disc. I believe that by offering these quasi-outreach tracks online, the recording will be better understood by non-musicians and be more approachable to a wider audience in general.
I am recording the CD on the Blue Griffin Record Label, a well-established studio that has recorded some of the top musicians in the country and produced many high-quality recordings. Most of the costs of the project are going towards the recording, editing, and duplication of the recording itself. The recording will be split up into individual sessions for each piece and will be recorded over the next 6-8 months. Each piece will then be edited individually and mastered for the final cut of the CD.
After the project is finished, the CDs will be available for purchase through various sources such as www.bluegriffin.com and iTunes.
I'm really looking forward to the project and recording all of the music on it. Please help to spread the word so that my project will be successful. Thanks!
