This project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Sun, March 31 2019 1:07 PM UTC +00:00.
Thank you for visiting my Kickstarter page! I'm grateful to have a community that supports my music.
I'm raising funds for the release of my second album, and my first on New Amsterdam Records. The album contains twenty-one minutes of music representing a focused vision developed over the course of about a year and a half. Shu Ohno, an internationally exhibited visual artist, will be contributing cover artwork. I expect the album to be released in spring or summer 2019.
I believe in the public value of unconventional music, and I've chosen to partially support this project through crowdfunding. My goal is to cover 25% of the total project expenses with this campaign. I've funded another 25% of the project using proceeds from sales of my 2017 album. (For those of you who purchased that album, thank you! This project has grown out of your support.) The remaining funds have come out of my personal savings.
I understand that some people don't have the means or aren't interested in donating, and that's okay! I welcome everyone to listen to the album when it's released. If you'd like a rough idea of the music before supporting my campaign, please listen to the mixes I've shared on SoundCloud.
You might be wondering why New Amsterdam Records doesn't provide funding. Unlike most labels, NewAm is a nonprofit organization. The label empowers artists by giving them 100% of royalties from their album sales and 100% of master recording ownership. In order to operate, NewAm charges an administrative fee to release each record. Funds from this campaign will go towards that fee. If you're curious to learn more the organization, please check out this great interview with NewAm's Artistic Directors.
The other major expenses involved in the project included compensating musicians who recorded parts, licensing sampled instruments, and mixing and mastering the record. I've paid for these things already, but I mention them because I think they give a sense of the scope of the project. Fortunately, there were no studio rental fees because everything was recorded at home or in the musicians' home studios. I've been lucky to collaborate with Michael Hammond, of the solo act No Lands, on the mixing and mastering.
I hope this album will bring people into the rich musical world that I've been experiencing. Thank you for your kindness and support.
Risks and challenges
The release of this album is contingent on funding, and an exact release date has not been set. The album will initially be released exclusively to New Amsterdam Records' subscribers on Bandcamp. General release will take place three months later. I have not made plans for a physical release.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
