About this project
Are you ready to build your team of skilled criminals and take on your rival crime lords?
You Dirty Rat is a competitive card game for two to four players, that plays in 20-45 minutes. Each player takes on the role of a Crime Lord assembling a team of criminal Specialists to help them pull some serious capers.
You Dirty Rat is a heist themed deck building game without the deck! By this we mean that you choose when to gain more cards, and your cards are either in play or in your hand. You don't have to get lucky and draw the right cards to make a great play.
This gives you complete control over strategy and yet has just the right amount of luck since you don't always know which Specialists you will recruit.
You Dirty Rat is a hand building game: A deck building game without the randomness of a deck!
How do you play?
You Dirty Rat is a strategy game about stealing as much money you can. Each Player starts the game with a hand of 6 Specialist cards, each with unique abilities.
Your objective is to use this team of six Specialists to recruit more criminals, complete Heists, steal from the town and swindle your opponents.
The game ends when the town runs out of money, there are no more Heists left to complete, or if there are no more Specialists available to be recruited.
You Dirty Rat uses a card cooldown system, we call The Hideout. On your turn, you play one or more Specialist cards into the first slot, or Night, of your Hideout. If you already have a Specialist card, or a Team of Specialist cards, in Night 1 they advance to Night 2 and push other cards through your hideout.
When a card is pushed out of the third Night of your Hideout it enters the Refresh Area. Any Cards in your Refresh Area will return to your hand at the end of your turn.
Each Specialist, in addition to having a special ability, has an Archetype used for different things throughout the game. This makes every Specialist is a valuable asset to your criminal enterprise. Instead of playing a single Specialist to Night 1 for its ability, you can place several Specialists all at once into Night 1 to complete a Heist.
These cards are called a Heist Team and follow the same cooldown rules as a single card. While Heists can tie up a lot of cards for a while, if you complete enough Heists in the same Heist Chain, you'll receive a sizable bonus at the end of the game
When the game ends, you count up the money in your Stash and add any Heist Chain bonuses to your total. The player with the most money wins!
Jake has taken the time to make a full playthrough video for You Dirty Rat. If you are interested give it a watch!
We are not going to mess around, we are offering you a great game. We have spent hundreds of hours making You Dirty Rat as good as it can be and we just want to put this game in your hands. Our basic reward tiers are simple, get the print and play version of the game, or get a copy of the game shipped anywhere in the world.
If you want to be a personal hero of ours you can choose our Crime Lord backer level. Where YOU get to be a Specialist in the game! We will ask you to send us some photos of yourself and we will make you one of the cards in the game! We will also send you a fancy framed print of the artwork.
If you are interested in finding out why we only have a few backer tiers read on. If not you can skip to the next section...
There are a couple major reasons we don't have more tiers. First, the game is complete and ready for a quick manufacturing turn around. We even have our manufacturer ready to go as soon as we get the funds from Kickstarter. This means we will get the game in your hands as fast as we possibly can.
Our second reason to avoid tons of add-on tiers is that the most important thing to us is that we produce a HIGH QUALITY game. Instead of spending extra cash on a half baked Kickstarter exclusive card that doesn't add anything to the game, we are focusing on improving your experience as a player. We are also planning on producing as many copies of the game at as high a quality as we can and want funds to go directly toward that goal.
We do have stretch goals, and we will be revealing some pretty cool stuff throughout the campaign, but our focus is, and will always be, providing you with an amazing game that you will want to share with everyone.
Our current stretch goal is:
If we can get to $10,000 we can print a large print run of the game and upgrade several components, such as the card quality and the money that comes with the game!
We have several other stretch goals planned and we will let you know the next one when we hit the current goal.
ProtoSpiel is a group that hosts several tabletop game developer's convention all around the United States and Canada. You Dirty Rat has been throughly tested at Protospiel and several other game designers have agreed You Dirty Rat is a quality game. Several designers even plan on backing the game through this campaign.
I'm a Retailer and I was wondering are you planning to sell the game in stores after the Kickstarter?
Yes we plan to. If the Kickstarter funds enough we will do a large print run and will gladly work with any retailers that reach out to us to get the game on their shelves. We don't have a retailer backer tier because those can be abused quite easily without thorough verification that the backer is in fact a store owner. If you are interested in buying several copies of the game for your store please contact us and we will put you on our retailer mailing list. We will notify you when the game is available for wholesale purchase, which will be around the same time the kickstarter backers will be getting the game.
I'm interested in doing a review of the game, do you have any art assets that I can use to make the review look nice?
Yes we do! We have taken the time to put together a Press Kit for the game. It is available at our website JacksmackGames.com
At the moment we are not yet able to send out review copies of the game. However you are free to try out the print and play and review the game.
So what happens after the project is funded?
When the Kickstarter is funded, we will celebrate, perhaps Dave and I will give each other a high five. That will last about 3 seconds and then I will be on the phone with our manufacturers. Once, they have approved the final art, production begins and surveys will go out. Shipping will be ready as soon as the games get to our warehouse, and then we will be burning the midnight oil to get the game out to you!
This is your first project. How do you know you won't fail?
Both Dave and I have been backing things on Kickstarter for a long time and have seen projects succeed, fail, and everything in between. As backers ourselves we know this is always a question you have to ask about any project.
When it comes to fears, our greatest fear is running out of money to get the game in your hands. So, we have made sure it is nearly impossible for this to happen. Every number has been checked and all quotes are complete.
Our worst case scenario is that we just barely break even after getting the game into your hands. We are ready to go, and have a healthy fear of the wrath of angry backers. We wouldn't post this campaign if we were not 100% confident in our ability to make our backers happy.
Jacksmack Games –Our company is a small digital design house that specializes in mobile games and web games. We have made games for Post Cereal, Sonic Hamburgers, and Nickelodeon to name a few of our clients. We have also done a lot of design work for print and web as well.
We have been feeling a need to get into manufacturing board games for a while because we find we are having more and more fun unplugging from our electronics. We are using our expertise to bring you quality games made by our team of design professionals. We want to give you more entertainment options away from your computer or mobile device.
Jacob Tlapek – I’m the creator of You Dirty Rat, as well as one of the team here at Jacksmack Games. I've always loved Heist movies and felt that there were really no Heist themed games that I could get my hands on that were good enough to earn a place on my shelf. I've been working on You Dirty Rat for 7 months and have learned a lot along the way. My wife and daughter have suffered through several prototypes and I just want to thank them for their support. You Dirty Rat wouldn't be possible without my girls.
Dave Fulton – Howdy! I'm the founder of Jacksmack Games. I've been making video games for years, and have loads of experience with everything from Art and Game Design to Programming and Databases. You could say I'm a Jack of All Trades. I've been designing board games in my spare time for a while now. When Jake showed me You Dirty Rat it wasn't much to look at. Together we honed it into a very good game that I'm proud to have as the first physical game product being released from Jacksmack Games!
Help us spread the word!
We could use your help getting the word out about You Dirty Rat! If you would like to help you could post one of these pictures to a social networking site of your choosing and tell others about the game. We would definitely appreciate your help! Remember this is totally optional, we are only providing these images for those who would like to use them to help promote the project.
Risks and challenges
This is our first Kickstarter, however we have seriously done our homework. We know things go wrong, and there are unforeseen delays that happen with these projects. However we are taking every precaution we can not to have this happen.
From getting quotes from backup manufacturers, to having scaleable options for the production quality of the game. We have worked hard to mitigate the risks that we face when publishing this game.
Risks are another reason why you won't find a lot of add-ons in this campaign. If adding things and changing our gameplan would cause a delay in the production of a few months, we don't think it is worth doing.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
