Think of Fatherhood's potential... & let's make it real! A children's book that celebrates engaged fathers and the boys they once were.
Thank you so much for all your support!! This is real! In the final days of the project, we're pushing for a stretch goal of $12,500 to increase the print run, and solidify the launch of this work as the debut of a small independent publishing house. A dream I hardly dared to dream coming true!!
A rewards update: If we make this new stretch goal, all books will be updated to special edition books that will only be available to Kickstarter backers! Each book reward that was already a special edition book will be upgraded to include a Remarqué, a small original hand drawn sketch, signed and dated within the book!
Keep spreading the word!!
What does it mean to be a father in this era, this day and age, this generation? What does it mean to be raising a baby boy, who will become a man, who may become a father and raise his own children one day, should he choose? Now, as a mother of two (a 3-year-old and an infant), I am blessed to experience the joys of raising two boys with their truly engaged father, and I have the pleasure of witnessing Beautiful Fatherhood as strong, gentle, and powerful. There are many ways to build a norm of engaged fatherhood, and Oh Oh, Baby Boy! is a sweet and beautiful way to nudge that culture shift. By celebrating boys and men, and their potential to be co-creators of uplifted families, my hope is to broaden the path of engaged fatherhood. Oh Oh, Baby Boy! doesn't preach or dictate, but reflects engaged fatherhood naturally, simply, quietly. It is an homage to exceptional fathers everywhere.

Q: What is Oh Oh, Baby Boy!?
A: Oh Oh, Baby Boy! is a full color, hardcover children’s book that celebrates engaged fathers and the boys they once were. To learn more about the book’s production specs, and concept, visit:http://ohohbabyboy.wordpress.com/about/
Q: What do you mean by “engaged fatherhood”?
A: To me, engaged fatherhood means full participation and involvement in the shaping and implementation of a child’s upbringing. Equal partnership, and a foundation of respect between parents are vital components. Visit the book’s wordpress site to learn more about the book's concept, see what others say, and share your thoughts about engaged fatherhood, too!:http://ohohbabyboy.wordpress.com/engaged-fatherhood/
Q: If I back your project, where will the money go?
A: The funds this project receives through Kickstarter will cover the cost of a first edition print run of 2,000 books. They will be printed by a trusted, high quality printer in Singapore or Malaysia on matte paper with a matte jacket. Trim size: 6x7" (portrait). The case cover will be cloth, with a blind emboss mimicking the cover art. I have earmarked a small amount of funds raised through Kickstarter for the cost of the rewards.
Why not go the traditional route and find a publisher?A: Good question! The short answer is that Publishing itself is a passion of mine. The epic answer is that arriving at Kickstarter has been a journey. After college, I was set on starting my own press. Long story, but I participated in New York University’s 6 week intensive publishing program, and from there fenaggled an internship which developed into a full time position at my dream publisher, a small house in San Francisco. I soaked up both opportunities like a sponge, hungry to learn the dynamics of the industry. It quickly became clear that starting a publishing house can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, and just as quickly I put the thought of starting a house to the back of mind.
After my first son was born, I took time off. I was sad to leave the independent publisher I was working for, but my passion for publishing didn’t leave. Books and stories began collecting in my brain. With the help of publishing friends, I started putting one of them to paper; I mocked up a book dummy to bring to publishers with artwork and text; I started shopping my first book. 3 or 4 publishers in, I was somewhat traumatized by the experience... positive feedback but no book deal. I put the book down, and tried to stop thinking about children’s books.
But the ideas kept coming. This book, Oh Oh, Baby Boy!, actually almost didn't make it past the idea phase. The thought of shopping the project to publishers again almost froze me in my tracks... Until I began to think seriously about publishing it myself. Why not? I realized. I’d done graphic design and print production, I was familiar with distribution models, I’m an artist. I have all the tools. The only barrier was funding.
And then Kickstarter came onto my radar.
Q: What happens if we surpass the fundraising goal?
A: Wow, wouldn't that be amazing?!! $10,145 will cover a print run of 2,000 books. In the publishing world, this is a pretty small run. If we can build $12,500, I'll be able to increase the print run to 3,000; and $14,500 will allow a run of 4,000. A higher print run makes the project more appealing to distributors, and also creates the inventory that can build funding for future books. It would absolutely be a dream come true if the proceeds of this book's sales created funding for the printing of one or two of the other books that are swimming through my head and journals. And imagine... proceeds from those books going to more and more books! Even more than having the access to create and share an idea, this has the potential to build a voice, create ownership, and (dare I say?) forge a future in independent children's publishing. Be still, my beating heart!
RewardsI’m really excited about the rewards I’ll be sending supporters of this project! (See the list at the right hand side of the screen.) I thought I’d outline details of some of the rewards here.

Gicleé Prints ($100+ and $250+ levels)
I’m working on two pieces of art that will be made into limited edition gicleé prints. The art is in progress, and here is a recent photo of its status:
With great gratitude and appreciation,
Backers will have their choice of two options: a gicleé of a mother and child, or one of a father and child. All gicleés will be on 300 lb watercolor paper. Backers of $100+ will receive their choice of an 8x10” gicleé image on 9x12” paper. $250+ backers will receive their choice of a 9x12” gicleé image on 11x14” paper. Only 250 prints of each image in each size will be printed.
