i Nudi: A Tribute to Lovers. Unique hand-illustrated playing card decks influenced by erotic art of the Italian Renaissance and the floral motifs of traditional hanafuda cards.
Available in two formats:
- Hanafuda (mini size)
- Fusion (standard poker size)
i Nudi: A Tribute to Lovers is a beautiful interpretation of historical artworks that melds erotic art from the Italian Renaissance and sweeping floral imagery of traditional hanafuda. The tasteful ‘East meets West’ style is meant to invoke a modern appreciation of two historically illegal and heavily censored items: erotic art and playing cards.
The Hanafuda Deck
i Nudi Hanafuda decks were designed to form twelve tetraptychs (one for each flower).
The Fusion Deck
i Nudi Fusion decks have been designed to combine standard pips and hanafuda images in an easily understood pattern. Helpful hanafuda indices have also been added to clearly indicate the Flower and Type of each card.
This multipurpose deck can be used to play any games that can be played with hanafuda or poker cards. The Fusion deck is also a great way to learn & teach hanafuda games.
What inspired i Nudi: A Tribute to Lovers?
i Nudi: A Tribute to Lovers is a synthesis of two historically illegal and heavily censored items: erotic art and playing cards.
i Nudi's artist, Antonietta, was inspired by the art and history of I modi (c.1524), Agostino Carracci (c.1798), Count de Waldeck (c.1850), and traditional hanafuda. She combined her own knowledge and interest in hanafuda playing cards with her artistic interests in figurative and floral art to create a beautiful fusion of the ‘more acceptable’ iconography of I modi’s successors with the innocuous floral motifs and cultural references of traditional hanafuda.
Who or what is I modi?
I modi was a 16th century collaborative collection of work by artist Giulio Romano, engraver Marcantonio Raimondi, and poet Pietro Aretino.
I modi (“The Ways”, “The Positions” or “The Sixteen Pleasures”) was essentially an erotic bestseller of the 1500’s that was banned by Pope Clement VII and virtually destroyed. There were numerous counterfeit editions and derivative works — many of which met the same fate.
A later collection of work by Agostino Carracci depicted figures from Greek mythology. Interestingly, this collection was considered less obscene due to its historical iconographic value.
Hanafuda are floral themed playing cards that are popular in Japan, Korea, and Hawaii.
Japan historically banned gambling and playing cards in the early 1600's. Hanafuda first became popular in Japan during this period because of their small concealable size, lack of obvious pips, and use of cultural iconography.
It was not until the late 1800's that playing cards were legalized in Japan.
Fun Fact: Nintendo was founded in 1889 as a hanafuda manufacturer.
How did IndianWolf Studios become involved?
I first encountered I modi in college (c. 2006 ~_^) when I quickly volunteered for what I thought was an ‘exotic’ research project in Medieval and Renaissance Studies. (・・ ) ? (⊙_⊙) (O_O;) (⁄ ⁄•⁄_⁄•⁄ ⁄) FYI, 'erotic' and 'exotic' look awfully similar! Antonietta was rather amused by the story of my folly and it planted some of the foundational ideas that led to the creation of i Nudi: A Tribute to Lovers years later.
When I saw the hanafuda cards that Antonietta was working on, I decided to make i Nudi: A Tribute to Lovers the first product release for IndianWolf Studios. The cards looked wonderful and being able to kick things off for my new game company with a cheeky tribute to Nintendo’s humble beginnings in the playing card industry was a nice bonus.
Modern perceptions about gambling, playing cards, and erotic art have evolved since these historic works were created.
i Nudi: A Tribute to Lovers is an artistic celebration and an appreciation of the human figure, erotic art, and traditional hanafuda.
The slideshow below illustrates some of the inspirations for i Nudi: A Tribute to Lovers.
What is Hanafuda?
Hanafuda (known in Korea as "Hwatu") are floral themed playing cards that are rich in symbolism and popular in Japan, Korea, and Hawaii.
Hanfuda decks contain 48 flower cards plus optional jokers (the i Nudi edition includes 6).
- Hanafuda are traditionally smaller than Poker cards.
- Hanafuda have 12 suits, one for each month of the year.
- There are 4 cards in each month.
- Each month has an assigned flower (e.g. June Peony).
- There are 4 types of cards: Brights, Tens, Ribbons, & Chaffs.
- Each month typically has 2 valuable cards and 2 Chaffs.
What does 'hanafuda' mean?
Hanafuda is generally translated as 'flower cards'. However, 'hana' is Japanese for both 'flower' and 'nose'.
This double meaning aided gamblers who could silently tap their nose to indicate their desire to purchase cards or find a gambling group without alerting the authorities. It is rumored that this also helped popularize the 'long nosed goblin' version of the tengu as a hanafuda mascot of sorts.
Why are hanafuda cards so small?
“The reason why these cards were made so diminutive was so that, under the strict laws against gambling in this Country [Japan], gamblers, when suddenly surprised, might easily hide them in the palms of their hands or force them into some other small space to avoid detection.” —Rossetsu Uchiyama. The Game of "Hana-awase": Japanese Cards. Japan: Seishi-bunsha, 1892.
What games can be played with hanafuda cards?
There are many different games that can be played with a hanafuda deck, including popular traditional games such as Koi-Koi, Hachi-Hachi, Go-Stop, and many more. Western games can also be played with a hanafuda deck.
Given the popularity, long history, and wide geographical range of hanafuda cards, there have been many games invented over the years with numerous variations ('house rules').
