520 Days Since the Incident

Posted by Inside the Box Board Games (Creator)

Hey there Cavers.

You've been through a lot with us on this campaign, but we've got some awesome news for this update!

Backer Pack Update

The Backer Packs (otherwise known as replacement pack, fix pack, spares pack etc) have arrived into the UK from China and are going through customs right now in the port. Once they've cleared (this will usually take a few days), we'll be able to get them sent out. Please note that we'll be sending them out UNTRACKED using standard postal service (by using this method, it dramatically reduces the overal cost of sending out thousands of packs, and helped us cram in so much extra cool stuff).

Please make sure if you haven't already, you confirm your shipping address in the backer pack survey (even if your address hasn't changed!). This way we're certain it's the most up to date.

Diorama Update

After a pretty gruelling saga with the Dioramas, we've finally got the first wave of 25/100 in the office ready to send out. We'll be sending these out as soon as we're back from GenCon (please come along and say hi! - stand #2857), early next week. The second batch is already in production and the producers are getting faster and faster with the prints now they've optimsed their system (it's a big thing to print perfectly). We rejected 6 of the first wave of prints which were reproduced, as they were not 100% on quality. Our producers fully understood and gave us them anyway.

Obviously we don't need loads of imperfect spares in the office so we'd like to do a little prize draw for those of you that might like one. We don't want you to pay us for this if we draw your name, but if you can afford it we'd love if you could donate to your national mental health charity.

Enter below with your details and we'll announce the winners here soon :)

Please note this is only open to Kickstarter backers and late pledgers of Sub Terra.

Spares, Replacements & Customer Support Update

Thanks to the incredible work of our freelance customer support team, made up of backers, convention helpers and friends, we've managed to clear an enormous backlogue of requests from you all to resolv various issues. We're now close to an empty system, with a big bunch of replacement parts going out right after GenCon early next week to those of you that needed one.

If you have any problems whatsoever, please let us know on and we'll get to it right away. We've made a final decision on our Operations Manager position, who'll introduce themselves next update. This new member of the team will be spnding their time ensuring we get our support responses out fast, keeping you informed and ensuring you get the support you deserve. They'll also be managing conventions logistics and other community events that I hope to see many of you at.

Art Prints

All of the art prints were sent a few weeks back, but if for whatever reason you haven't received yours, let us know on and we'll get a replacement to you.

iOS App

Frustratingly the new app is still going through iOS verification/qulity control procedures. When it's out we'll let you all know!

The Future for ITB & Kickstarter

We know we've made some big mistakes on this campaign. We've handled some things badly, and that's, for some of you, given you a pretty crappy experience of us and this campaign, one which ended on such a spectacularly high note back last year. We made a commitment to make sure we fixed everything, and we're still 100% determined to do that.

Being perfectly honest, this commitment nearly killed the company. We struggled immensely to make sure that we properly resolved all the issues we identified, get everyone their game, get spares sent out, and make good on our promises on the campaign.

I'm incredibly proud of my team for sticking with this project, and never giving up, even in spite of the staggering challenges we had to face to resolve our mistakes. In a similar vein, I've been amazed by the degree of engagement from the backer community. Not just those of you who've been supportive, but those of you who've been critical too. As much as it can be hard to receive a lot of criticism, it's been invaluable for us to learn from that experience, and hear what you've had to say. You suggestions, your problems, the enjoyment just as much as the frustration.

I want to say a big thank you to everyone who contributed to the campaign feedback survey. We'll be publishing the results along with the post mortem alongside an action plan for what comes next.

We promised that we're not going to launch another KS campaign until we've fixed all the stuff, and we're committed to that.

The big part is, what comes next? How will we run a new campaign? How will we make sure that you get a consistent, high quality experience of joining with us to make something cool? If you've got any more ideas for how we can regain your trust, and build projects together in the future, we'd love to hear from you.

A massive thank you once again for your patience and support

Peter & the ITB Team

      Who won the diorama contest?

    2. Isaque Lazaro on

I had a load of problems with this project from the very start to the 3 months stuck on customs. I had problems with GamesQuest, with the government, and you guys were fucking awesome at providing all due support.
This is what all companies should strive to. Not an inch of bad feelings for you guys.
Thank you all for one of my favorite games to this date.

      Isaque, from Brazil.

    3. Maros Belko on

sorry to hear that we love the game and would def. like some expansions in the future, is that something that could happen?

    4. WeAreGeek on

I feel your pain in regards to the commitments made, I hope you can look back at this whole campaign as an mostly positive growing experience and I hope that anyone still left with a sour taste don’t choose to haunt you in future campaigns.

I'm sorry that some people had problems, and that some of this has taken a while to resolve. I never experienced this, having received my copy of Sub Terra before the originally promised delivery date. I've been impressed with your commitment as a new, small start-up company to keeping in touch, resolving issues and learning from all this. Good luck in finally finishing that off and moving on to future projects.

p.s. Played Sub Terra last night with my kids - they loved it - 3 or 4 escaped at last possible moment, having left one behind to lure away the horrors...

    6. Kaliis Smith

Personally, I was super sad when you cancelled Newspeak because that game looked amazing. So I'm really looking forward to your next game. Good luck getting the rest of folks issues settled, and trust that enough of us were happy with these projects ( cause I backed Statecraft too!) to keep supporting what you do in the future.

I am not sure what are all the complaints you've received; I can only speak for my own experience. The product was delayed some? So what? We are helping create something, which IS going to have some bumps along the way. We are not buying a product off of the shelf. I feel you guys have handled this extremely well, and I am very happy with the open communication you've kept.

I got my copy of the game and my friends and I enjoyed it a lot. My friends have requested I bring the game over to other "get-togethers" I am very happy with the product and will definitely be looking out for other projects you may embark on.

What about Android app? It is almost useless in its current state (no soundtrack, awful character selection screen). Not a big deal, but should we wait any upgrades or keep on using the good old dice?
Good luck anyway! He is lifeless who is faultless.

I did my entry for the contest. When I hit submit it went back to start is it supposed to.

I hope you will be able to move on to new gamessoon.

      Art print received. Beautiful!!!

You're making stuff up........ What issues??

    12. cRuEllY

Are you kidding me? You claim being "close to an empty system" and I'm waiting since January 18th 2018 for a response regarding a support ticket I opened in October 2017. Since then I contacted you several times without any response and even open another ticket.

Don't bullshit me! If you don't want to send me the replacement box like you promised at SPIEL '17 and in your fist response, just say so and get it over with!

    13. Chris Liptau

As someone who received the game without problems, I think you're doing pretty good and keep up the communication. Maybe for your next projects you will know what add-ons are fast to make and which ones take time (so backers don't expect too much, too fast). Another thing you can keep doing is visiting exhibitions and meet with the people.

I look forward to your next projects and am ready to support it.

Like others I am extremely happy with the level of your commitment. Happy with the game, happy with your updates. Just happy.
Mistakes can be made by anyone - but admitting to them & fixing them - that's awesome.
There have been other kickstarters that weren't so forthcoming.
I will look forward to & supporting your future kickstarters.

FWIW, the fact that you produced such a high quality product (that was a genuinely good game, to boot) will probably go a long way toward getting backers back for future projects. I've really been enjoying Sub Terra, and everyone I've taught it to has enjoyed it as well. I'm certainly going to be watching future projects.

If the Address Survey would give some email-Feedback, we'd know and be able to check if we've already done it. Then again, I guess duplicates will simply be filtered out...
As for the campaign and future campaigns: I think your commitment so far has shown that you've been willing to fix your mistakes. Just don't repeat them! ;-) I'll also be watching, as Sub Terra is a fun and exciting game.

    17. Ghorron

have not received my art print, will send a mail ...

    18. Enzo Maini

To be honest, it is this level of commitment which will allow you to retain a customer for your next project. I for one will be watching. All the issues will help you be better and smarter as a company. Not necessarily a bad thing. Speaking for myself, it is the reason I wait to see what you have next.

    19. George

No worries and it has been good. Can't wait to see what you come up with next.

    20. Glen Young on

      +1 to comment from Russonc.

Looking forward to see what you come up with next! You all have been a class act throughout!
