About

NewSpeak is a game of code-breaking and subterfuge, set in a bleak near future for three to six players.

In the not-too-distant future, Britain is a high-tech paradise. The world seems perfect, thanks to the security app ‘ModNet,’ which identifies undesirable locations and Moderates them. Moderated Locations appear idyllic by manipulating the augmented reality eyeware virtually everyone now wears.

A small group of Dissidents seeks to challenge ModNet’s hold on society. Attempting to evade Moderators’ notice, they swap coded messages, planning to hack into location display settings and reveal the world for what it is.

Check out the How To Play video below, which outlines the game setting, objectives, gameplay and some strategies for attempting to subvert the domination of the ever-present moderators! (Or to be them...)

Dissident Objective: Show the people that they are living in a dystopia by hacking into and disabling augmented reality technology. Coordinate a majority of Dissidents at the most Locations to win.

Moderators Objective: Preserve the status quo by identifying the locations Dissidents are targeting and preventing Dissident hacking. Catch Dissidents at a majority of locations to win.

Player Set Up

Choose who will play as Dissidents and who will play as Moderators. The rulebook contains the split between the two teams for any player count. Hidden from the Moderators, the Dissidents collectively choose one of the code cards, inserting them into their Dashboard, with the Moderators getting the matching code sheet and inserting it into their dry-erase ‘Tablet’. In the core set there are 4 Dissident Dashboards and 2 Moderator Tablets.

Location Set Up

Shuffle the Neutral/Hacked Location Card deck and randomly select 12 of them, placing them Neutral side up in a 2,4,4,2 pattern.

The Hack

The Dissidents have two minutes in a free-form conversation to utilise their common set of codes and coordinate on a Location they will meet at. Dissidents will program the Location they believe they will be targeting into their Dashboard dials, and set them face down.

Moderation

Moderators then have one minute to crack the code and deduce the location Dissidents are hacking. The Mods will then declare which Location they believe the Dissidents are coordinating at.

Resolution

Dissidents now reveal Location they targeted on their Dashboards. If the Moderators have caught one or more of the Dissidents, that Location is ‘Moderated’ and its Moderation Filter is applied, bringing the Moderator’s closer to victory. If the Dissidents successfully coordinate a majority at a single Location without any Dissident getting caught, that Location is flipped to its ‘Hacked’ side, moving the Dissidents closer to victory. If neither happens, the Location the Moderators chose is removed from the game.

Additional Rules

In addition to the core code breaking system, Dissident characters also have unique abilities to help Dissidents change out code sets and prevent the Moderators from dominating. The Moderators can also use surveillance tokens, which are placed on Locations when they are flipped to the Hacked side, to detect nearby Dissidents and narrow down their search.

Competitions

Throughout the course of the NewSpeak campaign, we will be running a series of backer competitions, to win upgrades to your pledge and other awesome prizes. We'll announce these in the backer updates and put a thing here reminding you what's happening right now!

Each competition will last one week and will be announced each Monday.

There will be a total of 5 backer competitions!

Weekly Cipher Challenge

We love puzzles, codes and ciphers, which has been one of the key drivers for our team to develop NewSpeak and its rich and dizzying world. In the run up to the campaign we've run a range of code breaking challenges with thousands of participants all over the world, and this campaign is no exception to our love of puzzles!

Each week on a Thursday, we'll be announcing a new cipher for backers to crack. The first person to submit a correct answer to the cipher will be awarded a fabulous prize!

We will announce with each cipher where to submit your answers.

  • No retail or distribution pledges will be shipped out until at least 15 days after the last backer pledge in their region (UK/USA/CAN/AUS/RoW)

Risks and challenges

GAME DESIGN:
After being submitted the game concept in Autumn 2016, our in-house development team has thoroughly playtested and developed the game to a clear set of objectives to ensure that the game consistently delivers engaging, clear and fun experiences for players.

ILLUSTRATION & GRAPHIC DESIGN
Anyone familiar with ITB will know Zak Eidsvoog. He's been with us since Statecraft back in early 2016, and has been a key member of the team - ensuring every aspect of the game, its packaging and presentation communicate the information, strategies and theme of the game as best as possible. He's a professional designer with many years of experience who will be meticulously working through every individual item to ensure the final product exceeds your expectations. He'll be supported by our newly recruited in-house graphic designer, Archie, who will be 'moderating' all the print proofing work to ensure everything is produced as planned.

Similarly, David Thor Fjalarsson, our insanely talented Illustrator has many years of experience in the graphic novel industry, and has produced a huge amount of the illustration for NewSpeak already! Any additional content has already been prepared for, with art direction documents at the ready so David can pump out new content rapidly and to the same excellent standard.

PRODUCT DESIGN & PROOFING
We've been working on NewSpeak for over a year now, and a major part of that has been product design, ensuring the tactile experience of every component communicates the thematic aspects of the game as well as provides a satisfactory and seamless experience for players.

MASS MANUFACTURE
Last April, as part of the Sub Terra Documentary promised from our £300,000 stretch goal, we visited the factory in Shanghai. We inspected all the pieces of equipment and production lines, met with staff and talked through our production objectives with their team, to ensure that we know exactly how your games are made. This means we've already avoided many of the costly mistakes that can catch projects off guard, and optimised the product design to take into account the way the machines and team produce the games - meaning they'll produce them better, faster!

FREIGHT & FULLFILMENT
Shipping hundreds or even thousands of games around the world is a complex project, and we've learned an enormous amount from our previous three successful campaigns. We've already calculated the plans for shipping games to 4 regional warehouses and fulfilling locally from there, as well as factoring in a realistic amount of contingency time for the not uncommon delays associated with sea freight of the games from the factory in China to the warehouses around the world.

UNFORESEEN EVENTS
Delivering a complex tabletop game Kickstarter project successfully is a challenge in itself, with a huge number of variables in play at any given time, and a large variety of places where things can go wrong. Due to the nature of this process, some things may change, but we are dedicated to making sure everyone is fully informed of any planned changes to content, the timeline or any other relevant information. We learned from the Sub Terra campaign that we need to be better in this regard, and we're dedicated to proving to all our backers that we are committed to excellent service.
