About this project
Let me introduce you Overnight Generation
Overnight Generation is a post-clash reportage over the complex shades that being young adults can assume in the contemporary Sarajevo. A research on a fascinating, complex, and often unknown european capital, plagued by what has been acknowledged as the longest siege in modern history.
It appears to be a common belief that Sarajevo is recovering from its post-war trauma, but is that true? And what happened to the children of the conflict? Unlike other efforts that have been done in the same geographical context, Overnight Generation does not aim to expose the performative rage of an armed struggle, but rather to portrait the evidence of a more subtle violence: the ordinary drama of a post-war existence. A subtle curse that follows every of the young citizens that had to hide his or her best years behind the curtain of the conflict, and grow up overnight, while we were asleep.
Overnight Generation is a book which intent is not to allocate blame, but rather to portrait the efforts of a group of fellows, that sometimes could not have the chance to do things better, but in most of the cases exceeded all the expectations. It is a tribute to Sarajevo and to its young citizens: an insight into the lives of those affected by the war, an analysis on how its consequences have grown into a generational disease.
Your pledge will help to fund the designing, printing and binding costs for the first edition of Overnight Generation book, in 600 numbered copies. It will also contribute to build the launching exhibition for the project, to be opened in Sarajevo at the end of 2012.

A lot of work has already been involved to create the book, and we are now very close to see it published!
After more than two years involving regular trips to Sarajevo, several thousands photos taken, hundreds of hours spent in editing and post-production, months of work in the design and the essays, a dummy of the book was finally printed, and is now ready to become a real, independent publication. And this is where I need your help. Being it through your contribution, spreading the word, or both, I would like to express my deepest gratitude in advance for any assistance you can extend through your participation with this campaign.
Content & Design
In the attempt to visualize the intrinsic struggle narrated in Overnight Generation, a deep photographic essay was assembled, where several layers of reality collide with each other, and the portraits of the youngest children of Yugoslavia are either exposed, in all their defenselessness, or hidden behind the curtain of their same post-war fear of a normal existence.
The very essence of the book has been carefully put together thanks to the effort of an heterogeneous team of professionals, including a graphic designer (Francesco Vedovato), two writers (Federico Sicurella and Haris Selmanagic) and an artist (Daria Birang), who collaborated, each in his or her own way, in giving shape to a rich and intriguing object, which ultimate aim is to explore new and beguiling ways to present a photographic essay, as well as to create a cutting-edge contribution to the evolutionary process of the contemporary photobook.

The choice to superimpose a second, transparent layer of images to the original edit of the book, was born out of the necessity to render clearly the struggle that the city is facing, the oppressing memories, the impossibility of oblivion, and the affliction which has left thousands of young citizens of Sarajevo unemployed, cursed dwellers of coffee shops, bars and nightclubs.
What has been said about Overnight Generation
This is what Nadja Masri, Independent Photo Editor and one of the judges of Photo Book Slam Berlin 2012, had to say about the Overnight Generation photobook:
"(The book) Is a combination of good images, and compelling content…Sarajevo today, is one of the forgotten places in the world, it says it is undergoing construction, it's growing fast, it's recovering, but are these just slogans or reality for people living there today? A community affected by the war long after the hostilities have ceased… the youth, did they recover? What is on their mind? They do look bored, angry, proud, detached…daydreaming…nobody can be a star in Sarajevo, but they stay, that must be true love…as one of the chapters says. The portraits of the people are beautiful, they are sad, they move me, the book gives answers but also asks a lot of questions, it made me think, and that’s why I picked this book..."

On November 21st, 1995 a peace agreement was reached in Dayton, Ohio, to put an end to the three and a half year long war in Bosnia. Seventeen years later, on November 21st, 2012, I will hold a solo exhibition to launch Overnight Generation photobook in ASA Art Gallery in Sarajevo. This will be a symbolic exhibition in commemoration to the Dayton Peace Agreement. By contributing to the publication of the book your name will be present at the mentioned exhibition.

Risks and challenges
Although dummy books are typically thought off as sketches rather than definitive books, Overnight Generation is nearly a finished book at this stage. Only minor changes will be made to the original sequence, and some small design details will be improved using the feedback received during the exhibitions and festivals in which Overnight Generation has taken part. That said, the risks and challenges faced at this stage are limited to those inherent to the printing process, and this has been minimized as I have carefully researched and selected the best printer for Overnight Generation. I will be working with Drukverlag Kettler (www.druckverlag-kettler.com) in Bönen, Germany. They are very experienced in printing photography books and a number of their products have been awarded internationally recognized prizes such as the German Photo Book Award. I am now working very closely with their team, to make sure the whole printing process is just right for my photographs. Furthermore, I am planning to be at the press along with the book designer, making sure the prints will be as beautiful as we expected them to be.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
