About

The wheelchair

We are proud to present our function model for the world’s first rocking-wheelchair.

The rocking-wheelchair is an active wheelchair driven by the body weight and the small of the back muscles. Using this patented technology (patent number 00840/12 and 00902/2012), the hands are no longer needed to power the wheelchair wheels. The seat plate or cup respectively is connected to a rollable rocker mechanism. The drive work is done by a slight left-right tilt of the upper body.

The Benefits

Mobility through body movement for greater freedom and quality of life: The likeWALK®-drive is a new, worldwide patented, mechanical ‘rocking-drive’. Its extraordinary aspect: The new mechanical drive technology that does not require hands or arms. With their "liberated" hands, wheelchairs users get able to exert more tasks than before, and even to do them at the same time. In other words, what had previously been a challenge, can now become an everyday activity at work, in the household and at leisure.

The Users

Thus, for hundreds of thousands of affected persons, new opportunities and better quality of life arrive. In addition, body motion may result in medical / therapeutic advantages. In contrast to other wheelchair variants, also muscle areas in the back are used. The circulation is strengthened and at the same time, arthritis to the shoulder joints apparitions — sadly common — can be reduced or even avoided.

Among the customers target groups are all people who are dependent on a wheelchair and can attain greater quality of life through this new technology. In the first step, people to be supplied with the likeWALK® chair, are those who by disease and amputations — and the consequences thereof — are dependent on a wheelchair. This applies, for example, sufferers from multiple sclerosis (MS), muscle and tumor diseases, chronic polyarthritis, diabetes, peripheral vascular disease (PVD), circulatory disorders, accidents and many more. Due to very similar requirements, also weakened people, especially seniors, can benefit from the new technology in the same way.

With your support, we will finalize the prototype, improve it and bring it to series maturity. Due to our patented function model we are very confident that we can go into industrial production quite quickly.

Inspiration

I am an inventor. My job is to see problems and develop solutions. My principle here is that the problem is the mother of the solution.

I was in a restaurant. There were many wheelchair users. They had been for a ride. They had tractors. They can not take them into the restaurant. So, in the restaurant they could not drive by themselves. They were driven by their assistants inside. They sat at a table. Someone of them had to go to toilet. In order to get them there, they had to retract the others from the table. They remained like that for 10 minutes or longer. Their coffee got cold. They were far away from the others. I wanted to stand up and help them out. But I stayed and began to think about a solution.

For one year, the image of a bicycle pursued me.

When looking at a spinning wheel me the solution became clear.

  • They can not move with legs and arms.
  • But many of them have back muscles.
  • They can rock with the upper body.
  • The own body weight could drive a wheel.
  • While cycling, the driving force comes from the body weight, alternately left and right, through the legs.
  • This principle must also work without legs, directly out of the trunk. A seat pedal.

Stories

I got to know a lot of people and asked them. Paraplegic, MS-diseased, old people.

  • A gentleman in the nursing home, who’s been in a wheelchair since he’s 70 year old because he is fat and his knees can no longer carry him. His arms are too weak to push the wheels. He says: »Today I always have to ring the staff. Sometimes it takes 20 minutes for someone to come. With this wheelchair I could drive off, whenever I want.«
  • A paraplegic says: »I could go 10 or 20km per day hand-free. This exercise would improve my health in many ways. I could explore more and meet more people, had more oxygen, better digestion and need less back massage«

About the inventor

I am a self-employed inventor. My goal is to advance my developments of new technologies, such as a wheelchair. As a technician, I have completed 15 projects and received several national and international patents.

Risks and challenges

We need to finalize the functional model in a prototype in order to enable a rapidly series production. Currently, all the tests are successful, but the costs for a single wheelchair are still very high. With your help we are going to produce cost-effective, as we put all the funding in the prototype.
