ISHA IS A NEW SHORT FILM BY #FiveFilms4Freedom DIRECTOR CHRISTOPHER MANNING, AND HIS AWARD-WINNING CAST AND CREW.
Rahmi is a young Romanian Muslim man living in London with his mother and younger brother Cemil. His mother runs a family home that recalls their roots near the Black Sea, and speaks Romanian with her sons. Cemil has lived most of his life in London and, unlike Rahmi, is keen to prove to his teenage peers that he belongs. In the absence of their father, Rahmi is head of the family - and the bridge between the family's roots and their adopted home. But Rahmi has a secret. The double life he leads is catching up with him and soon he will discover that even the whitest of lies can shake his foundations to the core.
The film explores themes of intimacy, family, and love. It looks at what it means to forge your own path as an outsider.
WHY DO WE NEED THESE FUNDS?
Your support will make it possible for us to work at the standard expected at A-list film festivals: This means paying our cast and crew, feeding them properly during the shoot, and using the right equipment.
Your contributions will also allow us to work with European star actors brought to us by a Romanian casting director who has helped films win Berlin and Sundance.
Finally, your donations will also ensure that the script can make it onto the screen without compromises, and that we can work with the best sound and picture post production companies in London.
ISHA HAS AN AWARD-WINNING CAST & CREW
We have managed to attract a dream team: creatives with a Cannes Palm D'Or under their belt, colleagues who have worked for years at the Sundance Institute. Others have received the coveted Panalux Prize for Cinematography, worked on BAFTA nominated titles, or collaborated with such high-profile filmmakers as Sally Potter. Exciting casting announcements are coming soon!
WHY IS ISHA IMPORTANT?
We believe that good storytelling generates empathy, breaks down borders, and fosters understanding. ISHA tells a relatable story and gives visibility to marginalised groups in a time when misunderstandings about culture, religion, ethnicity, gender and sexual minorities are rife. We want to be part of the global discussion and bring ISHA to a wide, diverse audience.
CHECK OUT THE TRAILER FROM WRITER/DIRECTOR CHRISTOPHER MANNING'S #FiveFilms4Freedeom SENSATION JAMIE.
Director Christopher Manning's previous short, JAMIE, has had a million views online since the launch of the British Council/British Film Institute's 2017 #fiveFilms4freedom campaign. JAMIE has also been picked up by Peccadillo Pictures - one of the UK's leading distributors.
Following this phenomenal success, we feel it is the right time to bring you Christopher's next project, which is more ambitious, of a greater potential to garner awards at important festivals, and, most importantly, will pave the way for his first feature film based on ISHA.
Risks and challenges
All film projects carry the risk of not coming to completion. Filmmaking is an expensive and laborious enterprise, but we are all professionals with significant experience in our fields. And once we believe with passion in a project, we move mountains to make it happen.
We believe ISHA is meant for great things and just like with all our previous work, we will complete it, no matter what. How much money we will be able to raise will make that process slower or faster, and the resulting film more or less ambitious.
Short films, furthermore, do not usually provide a ROI in the financial sense. They can, however, build the careers of emerging talent, and being part of this process is what makes us, as well as those supporting us, invest time, energy and creativity in ISHA.
