Our first Kickstarter campaign introduced the dashing, swashbuckling Dwarf Musketeer duelists. This time around, we offer Mounted Dwarf Musketeers and the plucky ponies that share their adventures.
The Dwarf Musketeers were formed to protect the King whenever he left the Palace, but it was not long before their distinctive cassock, cavalier hat, flashing rapier, and broad-topped boots became the hallmarks of adventure and intrigue. Champions of the Queen, protectors of the realm, and defenders of the honor of their Company, they never refuse a duel, especially when they find an excuse to cross swords with the hated Cardinal's Guard Ogres.
And on those occasions when their mission takes them to the distant reaches of the kingdom and beyond, they are ably served by their valiant steeds. A Dwarf Musketeer and his courageous pony would be welcome additions to your swashbuckling RPG.
The Dwarf Musketeers also comprise an elite combat unit, serving with distinction as both infantry and cavalry. During the War of the Halfling Succession, they were always present where the danger was greatest: assaulting enemy fortifications, skirmishing as pistoleers, or charging stirrup-to-stirrup to break the enemy’s assault.
Whether attacking in formation as battle cavalry or skirmishing as dragoons, the Mounted Dwarf Musketeers will have a key role to play in your fantasy army.
About the Figures
The Mounted Dwarf Musketeers are brought to life by the exceptional talents of sculptor John Pickford. They are delightfully animated and radiate charm and personality. Each pack includes:
- Four different bodies. Each rider has his off hand on the reins, with the other arm posed for action. There are three right-handed poses and one left-handed.
- Four different heads. There are twelve unique separate-head variants, packaged in sets of four. These are the same heads used for the Dwarf Musketeer duelists and are interchangeable across the entire range. By using identical heads on a mounted and a dismounted body, you can have mounted and dismounted versions of your fantasy dwarf swashbuckler.
- Eight different hands. Each pack of Mounted Dwarf Musketeers is supplied with the DH3 Heavy Rapiers hand set, with a variety of hilt and guard options. If you prefer, you can exchange the DH3 Heavy Rapiers for any other hand set, such as DH7 Pistols and Saddle Holsters. Like the heads, the hands are interchangeable across the entire range. (See the add-on section below for images of the seven different hand sets.)
- Four different ponies. Each pack of Mounted Dwarf Musketeers comes with four different ponies, indomitable and full of character.
The Iron Mask Miniatures Mounted Dwarf Musketeers are 28mm white-metal figures in the tradition of the classic fantasy dwarves of the 1980s. They are old-school, but mix well with figures from a variety of current manufacturers. The ponies are cast with bottom tabs, so slotted bases are required. All figures are supplied unpainted.
Bodies with separate heads
The MDM1A, MDM1B, and MDM1C sets come with the four basic rider bodies and separate heads.
The fit of the head to the neck is accomplished through a kind of ball-joint fitting. You can rotate and tilt the head to suit your modeling preferences. No pinning is needed prior to gluing.
Bodies with integral heads
If you prefer your Mounted Dwarf Musketeers to have a more traditional fantasy-dwarf look, we offer an additional 12 variants with full beards and long hair, some wearing wigs in the fashion of 17th Century gentlemen. These are sculpted with integral heads, ensuring that the flow of hair and beard properly conform to each pose and costume.
Like the figures on foot, the Mounted Dwarf Musketeers have separate hands. Each pack of four Mounted Dwarf Musketeers comes with eight rapiers suitable for cavalry (the DH3 Heavy Rapiers hand set). If you prefer to model your Mounted Dwarf Musketeers as pistoleers or dragoons, you can exchange the heavy rapier set for the DH7 Pistols and Saddle Holsters hand set.
The hands are sculpted in gauntlets with a hollow cuff. This lets you fit the cuff onto the forearm and rotate it to suit your preference before gluing. Again, no pinning is necessary prior to gluing. In addition, the various rapier blades are held at different angles, which greatly multiplies your modeling options.
There are five additional hand sets so you can model your riders with variety and interest. In addition to rapiers, daggers, and pistols, you can put a plumed hat, tankard, hand crossbow, torch, grenade, scroll or any of several other items into your rider's hand. There are also empty hands (open, pointing, and making a fist) that are perfect for letting your Musketeer express a little attitude or call out an opponent with a proper hand gesture. All seven hand sets are shown in the Add-Ons section below. Note that the rapiers and daggers come with a variety of beautifully detailed guards (cup guard, sail guard, mortuary guard, and swept hilt).
Each pack of Mounted Dwarf Musketeers includes four different ponies with exceptional personality. They were originally sculpted for White Knight Miniatures for his Renaissance Dwarf light cavalry. They are used here by arrangement, only slightly modified to better accommodate the Dwarf Musketeer poses. At Iron Mask Miniatures, we have come to think of them as the Four Ponies of the Apocalypse. They are also available separately as add-on items.
All backers will receive a PDF copy of Grands Chapeaux, our beer-and-pretzels skirmish rule set endorsed by swashbucklers everywhere. Version 2.0 includes rules for mounted duelists, with additional Optional Rules for the Four Ponies of the Apocalypse. It is a simple skirmish game with lots of dice rolling (and dice stealing!). Your swashbuckling hero can swing from a chandelier, leap into the fray from a high balcony, and ultimately triumph against overwhelming odds...mostly. The rules are only eight pages long and easy to learn. Play is quick and fun without any bookkeeping.
Choosing your Pledge Level
Because of the success of the first Kickstarter campaign, we were able to lower the price per figure for the complete range, including the new miniatures. The reward options are kept open so you can mix and match mounted and dismounted figure packs. Domestic postage is included and international backers get an equivalent postage credit (see "Shipping and Postage" below).
We tried to organize the premiums and add-on items so that backers of the previous funding campaign need not duplicate rewards they already have. As you read through the list of pledge levels, you will notice premiums consisting of only Mounted Dwarf Musketeers alternating with premiums consisting of both dismounted and mounted figures. If you already have Dwarf Musketeers, you can find pledge levels that complement what you have. If you are new to the Iron Mask Miniatures range, you can look for premiums that include dismounted as well as mounted figures.
Be advised that there are two $130 pledge levels, one for 12 riders and the other for 8 riders plus 8 dismounted figures. That’s simply the way the numbers worked out.
Of course, no arbitrary list of combinations works for everyone, so the complete range is available as add-on items. Also, remember that you can substitute any handset for the one that comes standard with the figures. At the bottom of this page, you will find the current Iron Mask Miniatures catalog, including Dwarf Musketeers on foot, all of the hand sets, Personalities, and the unforgettable Cardinal’s Guard Ogres.
For this Kickstarter, we added single-figure options for both Dwarf Musketeer duelists and Mounted Dwarf Musketeers. If you need a specific number of figures and the four-figure packs do not work for you, you can add single Dwarf Musketeer Duelists and Mounted Dwarf Musketeers as needed.
Finally, those of you who participated in the first Kickstarter may wish to know that the DM4 pack of foot figures is new. These are the long-bearded versions of the DM1C figure pack that many of you received as a surprise bonus.
Shipping and Postage
The shipping cost of a small flat-rate box is included for premiums shipped to the United States.
International backers will get an equivalent postage credit based on the USPS international rates for small flat-rate boxes, but the balance of the postage ($21) will have to be added to your pledge. For customs purposes, premiums will be valued at the replacement cost of the metal. In some instances, it will be less expensive for international backers if we ship their premiums in two small boxes rather than one larger one.
For both domestic and international backers, if your premiums result in a large shipment, additional postage may be required. If so, we will contact you for additional postage once your shipment is weighed and ready to post.
And Coming Next... The Forlorn Hope
The forthcoming Third Wave will comprise the Dwarf Musketeer Forlorn Hope and will feature at least 12 poses plus command figures (officer, standard bearer, sergeant, and halfling drummer). If time allows, it will also include mounted command figures. Sculpting is already underway. (Concept art by Colin Upton.)

Basile is one of the most daring and notorious Dwarf Musketeers. A deadly shot and master duelist, he earned his nickname because of his penchant for charging his enemies with his reins in his teeth and both pistols blazing. He comes both mounted with separate pistols (and a pony, of course) and dismounted as a single-piece casting with rapier and pistol.
Basile le Fou will be a limited-edition figure of 250 copies (although, if needed, we will produce additional copies to fulfill the obligations of this Kickstarter campaign).
All of the figures listed below are available as add-on items. You can find a more detailed catalog on the Iron Mask Miniatures blog.
Backers of the first Kickstarter should note that DM1C and DM4 are new releases. DM1C was a surprise gift sent to backers who purchased specific add-ons in the last Kickstarter. DM4 is comprised of long-bearded duelist with integral heads. It includes two bare-headed variants and is released here for the first time.

When you receive the backer survey, you can indicate your single-figure preferences. I will do my best to supply the figure you want. If this is not practical, I will select a figure as close as possible to your preferences (and try not to duplicate heads).

Risks and challenges
There are no significant risks. This is our second Kickstarter campaign. The master castings are ready to go into production. Making the production molds, casting, sorting, packaging, and shipping will take about four weeks, so premiums should start shipping in October of this year.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
