The Duel: Point of Honor
The Duel: Point of Honor is a two-player tactical card game with tight meaningful decisions and fast gameplay.
This project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Thu, August 23 2018 5:34 PM UTC +00:00.
"...a story of dueling, which became a legend in the army, runs through the epic of imperial wars. To the surprise and admiration of their fellows, two officers, like insane artists trying to gild refined gold or paint the lily, pursued a private contest through the years of universal carnage."
-Joseph Conrad, The Duel: Point of Honor, 1908
Civilization is gone but robots remain, programmed to fight for all of eternity. In The Duel: Point of Honor, sword-fighting robots engage in intense and thoughtful combat to test their knowledge and skill.
As the robots endlessly fight, they train and learn from their previous battles. Every time the robots meet, they employ new strategies and tactics to best their opponent and achieve Honor.
In the Duel: Point of Honor, you take on the roles of two of these robots. You engage in a number of battles to determine who is the more renowned fencer and who is the most honorable automaton.
You have many options for victory. You can be celebrated for being agile and skilled. You can earn Honor for your pageantry, decorum and character. Or you can let your blade do the talking and leave your opponent scarred and damaged.
But be warned, the more damaged your opponent becomes, the more options they will get to train and improve their skills for future battles.
The Duel: Point of Honor is a tactical card game for two players. Each game takes 10-20 minutes to play and features a number of interesting decisions. It is easy to pick up, but has a significant weight of gameplay. It is the perfect game for people who have 10 minutes, a love for robots, and an awesome friend.
The game box is 160 x 112 x 30 mm and contains a deck of 24 cards, 25 tokens and a 16 page rules booklet. Because the game is so compact and simple we are able to offer it on Kickstarter for only $12!
As we meet our stretch goals, we will add a number of features to improve the quality of the final product. All goals are designed to improve components, packaging, and appearance.
The game takes place over a number of Duels. In each Duel, Players have a hand of seven cards, and they will use those cards to try to score as much Honor as possible. After each Duel, players have the opportunity to earn more powerful cards.
Each Duel consists of three rounds of combat, divided into two phases: the Timing Phase and the Action Phase. Players will play one card in each phase.
The cards in the game have two main elements: A Timing Number and an Action. Cards will be played either for their timing value, or for the their main Action.
Both players select a card from their hand and simultaneously reveal it. The player with the lowered numbered card will play first in the Action Phase.
It is advantageous to play later in the round, but the player with the lowest total sum of Timing Cards will earn Honor for playing faster.
In the Action Phase, Tactics and Attacks are resolved in an effort to win the Duel.
Tactics Cards manipulate gameplay and help players earn Honor. Attack Cards deal damage and have other interesting effects.
Most effects resolve instantly as the card is played, but Damage from Attack Cards is dealt only after both players have played their actions.
There are a number of synergies and combos with the cards and there are a number of decisions that you will make on how to use them. You can decimate your opponent if you play your cards right.
Each game is a balance of decisions, deductions, and luck. You have to know the right time to play the right card. Every game has a different projection and offers hundreds of combos and tactics to bend your brain around.

One more robot learns to be... Something more than a machine.
The first law of robotics is that a robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. I don't remember hearing any thing about not harming another robot.

"The Duel seems like it would be a great filler game for people new to the hobby but also offers enough strategy to keep experienced players engaged. I love, the theme...that is great!!!! Really good integration of theme and mechanics."
-Suzanne Zinsli | Cardboard Edison
"The card play seemed to have the feel of a sword duel. It's simplicity will appeal to a lot of casual card game players."
- Steve Cole | Game Designer
"This game is great. It has few rules, the card information is clear and concise, has no timing issues or rule issues to speak of, and has just enough variance to have good replay value. It’s short enough to use as a lunch break game, and with very little set up time, can be played on a spur of the moment."
-Chris Globus | 2dieforGames
"[The Duel] is easy to understand and tactical players will really enjoy it!"
"This is a really good two player game that fits in a collection with Lost Legacy and Love Letter."
-The Indie Game Report
"The decisions stay fresh throughout the entire game, which is exactly what you need with something small like this... This hits all the right notes for me. A quick playing time, easy to learn rule set with plenty of player reading and brisk pace."
All stretch goals will go to making the final game with the highest quality components as possible.
