IRON ATLAS is still moving forward with development! If you'd like to receive updates and/or help contribute to make the app a reality, please send your email address to: firstname.lastname@example.org (your address will not be given to any third parties, sold, or used other than updates).
IRON ATLAS is a "Digital Miniatures System" by Lifeform Entertainment designed for iPad and ANDROID to serve as an alternative to physical maps and miniatures for roleplaying games. What does that mean? Build RPG encounters on your tablet! Game even when don't have your regular maps and minis! Use the art and maps from the books and settings you're currently playing!
IRON ATLAS takes many of the elements that you see in traditional, PC-based Virtual Tabletop systems (VTTs) and optimizes them for use on mobile devices. We're streamlining the UI to keep it simple, elegant, and focused on the basics for combat, plus providing tons of content for you to pick and choose for YOUR game.
We're taking the social component of gaming to heart with IRON ATLAS. Let's face it, when you want to play an RPG with your friends, you want to game WITH your friends. There, in the same room. The design of IRON ATLAS focuses on this "in-person" style of play, with room to include remote connectivity for your buddies that can't make it to the session.
IRON ATLAS will be free to everyone to use for the SIX MONTHS after release, even to those that don't back the project. That's right, FREE. Back us at the IRON SURVEYOR ($5) level or higher and you're guaranteed to use the IRON ATLAS base app for free, forever.
As gamers, one thing that frustrated us was not being able to use the actual maps that came in the books, adventures, and supplements we owned when running combats and encounters.
Instead, we did the same thing as every other gamer: draw out a crude outline on a dry-erase mat or spend time and effort printing and scaling maps for use on the tabletop to use with our minis. Character art posed a similar problem: "Here's a great picture of the Big Bad Guy™," we said. "Wouldn't it be great to use his art as an actual miniature?"
IRON ATLAS solves the problem by letting you browse and download the maps and fantastic character and monster art, from the publishers you love, to use as virtual miniatures. The in-app store comes with content from tons of well-known publishers, cartographers, and illustrators within the RPG industry, letting you cherry-pick the monsters, maps, and other elements you want for your particular game. Help us beat our goal and we'll add MORE FREE content and additional publishers to bulk up the in-app store, giving you a huge range of maps and tokens to choose from when building your adventures!
Click the links here to see more about our publishers: Green Ronin Publishing, Adventure-A-Week, Rogue Genius Games, Kobold Press, Legendary Games, Maps of Mastery, The Game Mechanics, and fantasy illustrators Raven Mimura, Pete Venters, and Mark Poole.
IRON ATLAS is GAME AGNOSTIC. This means that it works for any RPG, and genre, that uses maps and miniatures. We're focusing on the traditional fantasy genre at first, but we'll soon add loads of maps and tokens ranging from sci-fi, superhero, horror, modern, post-apocalyptic, and even historical!
Regardless of the roleplaying game system you're running, you'll easily craft different combats on the fly, mix-and-match content to create custom encounters, or purchase IRON ATLAS-ready Adventure Companion Modules to complement the adventures from RPG publishers—each encounter in those adventures pre-built, pre-placed, and ready to go inside the app.
IRON ATLAS focuses on the Gamemaster and what's needed to run encounters in their particular RPG system. The base app is designed for the iPad in all current versions (iPad 2, iPad 3, iPad Air, and iPad Mini) and for select ANDROID devices. The dimensions and UI of the app work best on tablets and make the Mobile Tabletop and Encounter Builder easy to use.
IRON ATLAS is more than a mere app: it's an entire "Digital Miniatures System." It lets you create adventures and encounters, play them on the app's Mobile Tabletop, and provide the content you want through the robust in-app store. If we beat our goal, we'll add some amazing additional features to make IRON ATLAS a true one-stop ecosystem for running your roleplaying games.
The Mobile Tabletop is where the action takes place, combining an encounter map with tokens for combat. Move tokens around just like you would physical miniatures on a battle mat. Zoom in and out or pan around the map using intuitive touch gestures. Touch a token to bring up its info—name, class, and vital combat statistics—without having to leave the screen. Encounter Tokens let you group individual creatures and place them on the map. Easily populate a huge dungeon map with these Encounter Tokens to reduce clutter. Things going too easy for the players? Drag out duplicate monster tokens right from the Token Pane onto the map. The GM can hide or reveal tokens and easily switch between GM View (see everything, including menus) to Player View (only what the GM wants the players to see). We have additional features planned for the Mobile Tabletop, which will get unlocked as stretch goals!
You can easily output IRON ATLAS to an HDTV, meaning your TV becomes "the battle mat" for everyone to see! Fog of War and the GM/Player View switching allows the GM to show only what players need to see, while keeping unrevealed monsters, traps, and the UI Panes hidden from view. Connect with an HDMI cable or wirelessly via AppleTV, Chromecast, Reflector (if you want connect to your computer), or other third-party app.
Use simple, intuitive touch-based gestures to easily drag-and-drop monsters and characters into the Encounter Builder. Browse the Token Codex, find the characters or monsters you like, and drag them out to rapidly build individual encounters. Your system doesn't use "Hit Points?" No problem! Edit individual tokens with stats and notes for your specific game or system, so you can turn that stat into something else. Pre-plan an entire adventure full of encounters and group multiple adventures into campaigns. IRON ATLAS auto-saves as you build to prevent loss of work.
IRON ATLAS comes pre-loaded with several maps and tokens for each primary character class, standard fantasy races, and creature types. You'll also receive a variety of traps, architectural features (like secret doors, stairs, obstacles, etc.) and environmental effects (such as fire, magical vortexes, webbing, etc.).
Get maps for your encounters, adventures, and campaigns through the IRON ATLAS in-app store, pulled directly from your favorite publishers' adventures or source books. Created your own map? You can upload your maps into the app and use them when building encounters. This includes huge world maps, regional maps, or "tactical" level maps that mimic drawing out a battlemat for your adventurers to go beat the crap out of Orcus. The app comes with several pre-loaded maps for you to use, for FREE. Plus, the base app will include ALL the maps from a NEW adventure from the Ennie-Award Winning Freeport: City of Adventure setting (using the Pathfinder rules) by Green Ronin Publishing.
A "token" is our term for a digital miniature, consisting of an amazing piece of artwork, name, description, and info that you'll need when that creature is in combat, such as Initiative, Armor Class/Defense Score, and Hit Points. IRON ATLAS comes ready-to-go with tokens for typical d20 system primary character classes, creature type, and a variety of environmental effects, traps, and obstacles. Customize token info to suit your particular RPG system. Browse the in-app store and purchase IRON ATLAS-ready Token Packs pulled directly from publishers' products and illustrators.
In addition to being able to purchase individual tokens and maps, the in-app store features publisher-specific, IRON ATLAS-ready ADVENTURE COMPANION MODULES. A Companion Module works in concert with a PDF or print version of an adventure, taking the maps, tokens, and encounters of a specific adventure and assembling them for instant use. Each encounter has its monsters and traps already in place on maps, with pre-built names and stats. Plus, all the maps and tokens get added to your Token Codex for you to use in creating your own encounters! Companion Modules are a great way to bulk up your collection, make running specific adventures super easy, and helps support your favorite publishers. One of our stretch goals includes an Adventure Reader, allowing you to purchase and use the full adventure text plus the companion module, right inside IRON ATLAS.
Simply put, we here at Lifeform Entertainment made IRON ATLAS to be the app that we would use for our tabletop games. While there are several great apps, virtual tabletops, and other digital tools out there, we wanted something that was easy-to-use and concentrated on game PLAY rather than cramming in every rule or providing dozens of drop boxes that might slow things down for the GM and players.
IRON ATLAS focuses on the core elements of combat: a map, the creatures and PCs for that combat, and access to vital combat stats. BOOM. Customize creatures, player characters and whole encounters for the specific game you're playing, while still keeping things simple.
Don't get us wrong; we LOVE physical miniatures, battle mats, and 3D terrain (and have boxes and boxes of them to prove it). But, maybe you're a GM that doesn't want to haul all your battle mats and miniatures to a game session. Perhaps you're a GM running a game at a convention? Maybe your gaming group is on a bus, ferry or otherwise can't set up a map for combat? Or, like us, you want to use the actual gorgeous maps and artwork from the adventure you're playing instead of drawing it out by hand on a dry-erase board?
That's where IRON ATLAS comes in.
Typing is kept to a minimum. You can edit a creature's name, stats, and other information critical to combat. However, IRON ATLAS' UI otherwise utilizes touch, scrolling, and drag-and-drop gestures to get the work done instead of having to hand-type in numbers every single time you want to build an encounter.
We created the Encounter Builder feature with the same idea: make the creation of combat-focused encounters something that could be done in mere minutes.
IRON ATLAS is designed to work for any roleplaying game that uses maps and minis. Instead of providing all the rules (and the kitchen sink), the app focuses on customizable stat blocks you can change for your games. In combat, you typically need just a handful of stats to reference, while your books and adventure text provide the rest. We don't need to add all the rules, anyway. Why? You already know the rules!
We've spent the past year planning and designing the app, and brokering deals with RPG publishers to create the IRON ATLAS publishing platform. The design phase is now feature complete and our team has created playables to test. Our amazing team of programmers, UI designers, and artists hail from the world of video games (along with designers from the RPG and tabletop gaming industry) are ready to go into production mode. We're preparing for the costs associated with full-time development and the robust levels of support we plan to deliver.
Funding on Kickstarter will cover these costs. In addition to core programming, part of the budget covers the time and money to take the massive back-catalogs of our publishers and convert the maps and tokens into IRON ATLAS-ready assets. We're also paying top-tier fantasy illustrators to create the pre-loaded maps and tokens that come with the base app. Finally, we need to make sure that our in-app store works flawlessly when it comes to picking out and buying content.
Our team consists of veteran roleplaying and video game designers who love roleplaying games. IRON ATLAS is a labor of love and something we've wanted to create for a long time. That means it's on us to make it happen. Everyone we've shown the app to has made it clear that THIS is the mobile gaming app that they've been craving for their RPG sessions. We want to fill that need.
Lifeform Entertainment has an amazing team of programmers, designers, and artists, with an incredible amount of hand-on experience and attention to detail. All of us are veteran game developers (some for over 20 years), with heavy-hitting backgrounds at companies like BioWare, EA, Activision, and Wizards of the Coast. The team's ultra-high creative standards, design expertise, and "on-time, on-budget" approach to development have gained us the respect of clients and colleagues alike. Lifeform Entertainment was founded in 2009 and located in sunny Seattle, WA.

Additional charges for applicable duties or taxes may be required by customs in the destination country. Lifeform Entertainment, LLC has no control over potential duties or taxes. Backers are responsible for paying any duties or taxes for shipped items.

Risks and challenges
As with any software project, the primary risk is balancing the budget of a project versus the realities and rigors of development and sticking to a set time and features schedule. Because of our team's extensive development experience, we're confident we can get this one right.
Early technical and play tests prove that our design for IRON ATLAS is solid, balancing ease-of-use with the complexities of play. Our engine allows us to develop for cross-platform right from the start. However, TESTING against the dozens of screen sizes and system particulars requires a strong push for top-notch Quality Assurance on as many devices and game systems as possible.
In short: We're a very experienced team familiar with this type of development, have looked hard at the challenges ahead, and are very driven to make this app and platform a reality.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
