The Peacock King is the first book in an epic fantasy series set in a world where reality can be rewritten and weapons can tell the innocent from the guilty. You can preview the first chapter here. You can preorder a copy of the book here and get Kickstarter-exclusive goodies and art!
Since the campaign is ending soon, I want interested people to know you can always find the latest Peacock King news at peacock-king.com. The rewards are getting bigger and the book is now illustrated! Check further down the page for all the stretch goals we've unlocked so far!
UPDATE: At 75 backers we added another illustration to the story. We just hit our $5000 stretch goal, which means all backers get an exclusive bonus story!
UPDATE 2: We blew past a couple more stretch goals in our final hours! Check the Stretch Goals section for details!
All pledges at $25 and above get a Poet Badge button and an Armed Button. If you'd like buttons but you're not getting a print book, add $3 to your pledge and we will send you both anyway!
Lyric has been lost in the Peacock King's empire for fifteen years, unable to return home to Radia. Trafficked across the land by an underground slave trade, he's finally rescued by Ebrelle - the Peacock King himself. Now Lyric has a chance to bring his former captors to justice.
But the Peacock King's protection comes at a price: control. He treats his guardian Zhevesti, millenias old and with the power to level a city, more like a pet than a person. And Radia is on the verge of declaring war over Ebrelle's draconian foreign policies.
But Ebrelle will not go uncontested, as Zhevesti has summoned a powerful ally to his side. The Poet Gerald bears magic as real as he can write it, and he's also one of the Armed, sworn to enforce the Law. His guns bear souls, and their idea of problem-solving involves bullets. When he discovers Lyric in the Peacock King's palace, it sets a chain of events in motion that could restart the war between the Peacock King and Radia - with Lyric caught in the middle.
In 2004, Irk got an idea for a story. Let's just say it was about this guy who really liked peacocks. After composing some character sketches and bios, and working out a rough plot, she wrote two paragraphs and promptly gave up. Novels are hard.
In 2008, Irk told her bestie and roommate Char about this story. Char did not take "novels are hard" for an answer and proceeded to strangle Irk until words came out. Long epic short: it worked, and The Peacock King was illustrated and serialized on the internet. Thousands of readers from around the world read The Peacock King. We published two chapters a week, adding up to four novels, several miniserieses, and a collection of shorts.
In 2012 we took a step back and decided that Peacock King needed a rewrite if it was ever going to be published. Since then, we've recrafted the overall plot of the novels, rebuilt some of the world to get it up to code, and rewritten all of Book One.
Now it's time to publish that book.
Both of us are so excited to share the world of the Peacock King with our supporters. Thus we feel it's only right that everyone who contributes will get to have a piece of that world.
$1 - Poets make everything possible. Often overlooked, they can nudge the very essence of the world with their words. As a backer at Heart of the Poet level you will get a Kickstarter-exclusive digital wallpaper featuring the main cast of The Peacock King. Your name will be immortalized on our Backer Thanks Page at the Peacock King website. Update: backers have unlocked a bonus short story which you will receive as an ebook!
$5 - The Armed have aim so precise that it can cut down the guilty and spare the innocent. Use your precise aim to keep track of your place in any story with your backer-exclusive Peacock King bookmark. You will also receive the digital wallpaper, and your name will go down in history on our Backer Thanks Page. Update: backers have unlocked two more bookmarks, so this tier gets you THREE bookmarks now! Backers have also unlocked a bonus short story which you will receive as an ebook!
$10 - You get The Peacock King as an illustrated ebook in epub, mobi or pdf formats! This will come in handy because your new job as Herald of the Court will have you reading books aloud a lot and... uh. Well anyway, you get the digital wallpaper and your name on our Backer Thanks Page as well! It's exciting to be the Herald, isn't it? Update: backers have unlocked a bonus short story which you will receive as an ebook!
$15 - Meddling Poet, using your word magic to tamper with the very fabric of reality. Don't you understand that you can't use a physical bookmark to hold your place in a digital book? You're fiddling with powers you don't understand! Nevertheless, we will still send you a bookmark in the mail, along with an electronic copy of the book, and a digital wallpaper. And despite your unnatural attempt to manipulate the world, your name will still go on our Backer Thanks Page. Update: backers have unlocked two more bookmarks, so this tier gets you THREE bookmarks now! Backers have also unlocked a bonus short story which you will receive as an ebook!
$25 - Perfecting Poetry itself, you have gone beyond the level of using physical bookmarks on electronic files. You will now use your physical bookmark on a physical book, both of which we will mail to you. This isn't just any copy of the book, though - we will sign it and dedicate it to you on a special Kickstarter-only bookplate. Includes everything in the Herald of the Court package. Update: Stretch goals unlocked! This tier gets you TWO bookmarks now, plus the Poet Badge and Armed Badge buttons. Backers have also unlocked a bonus short story which you will receive as an ebook!
$35 - Books are all very well and good, but what about pictures? Any old picture is worth a thousand words. This 6x9" frameable color portrait of the Peacock King is worth about... 93,000, give or take. You'll receive it along with everything in the Poet Laureate package! Update: Stretch goal unlocked! You also get 5x7" prints of two of the in-book illustrations!
$50 - You're not just any art collector. A true connoisseur, you won't stop at one portrait of the King. Luckily we have a different 11x17" frameable color portrait of the King (and Lyric and Gerald) to satisfy your quite-understandable need to collect as many pictures of him as possible. Includes everything in the Royal Portrait package. Update: Stretch goal unlocked! Along with your poster you will also get a poster of the story map!
$75 - A print isn't enough. A print and a poster aren't enough. You need something... special, and you'll stop at nothing to get it. Luckily you don't have to steal anything, we'll mail this stuff right to you. In addition to everything at the Royal Gallery level, we will send you an original concept art sketch that either Irk or Char drew over the course of making The Peacock King. We have drawn a LOT of art for PK, so there's a lot of pictures to pick from. When we send out backer surveys, we'll ask you what types of drawings you want, and we'll pick the best fit from the answers you give us. We're limiting this reward to 50 pieces, so act fast before they're all gone!
$90 - Gerald spends a bit of the book playing a card game with Aurocan cards, which are similar, but not identical to, poker decks. (If you remove a few extra cards, you CAN play regular poker with them.) You will get a deck of these, along with instructions for an in-story game played with these cards. The cards will be in color and decorated with portraits of royal figures from the Peacock King world. Also includes everything in the Royal Gallery package. (Ten backers will be able to receive a concept art sketch with the Early Bird version of this package, so act fast!)
$175 - Do you love books so much that you want a book for your book? You will receive your book inside a special keepsake box personally inscribed to you. Inside it will be decorated with relics and charms evocative of the story, some of which will be taken directly from the story. The box is shaped like a hollowed-out book, so it will look perfect either on your bookshelf next to the other books, or displayed somewhere more prominent. Along with that, you get everything at the Courtyard Gambler level, plus an original sketch from the Royal Art Thief level.
$300 - Do you love books so much that you want to be in them? Well, you're going to love this. Several lucky backers at this level will get a character in Peacock King named after them. (Your name may need to be adjusted to fit into the story-world, since it's a fantasy world and not modern Earth. We'll consult you to make sure you like it!) You also get everything from the Courtyard Gambler level, plus an original concept art sketch from the Royal Art Thief level. And your character may or may not live on in Peacock King infamy, as they may or may not appear in subsequent books! Or... your character may be a cat. Possibly they will be both.
$1000 - The 6x9 prints are based on an original piece of artwork. It is a 9x12" scratchboard illustration with fine details that can't be reproduced in print. There is only one, it took hours of work, and if one of you out there wants it bad enough, you will get it! You also get everything at the Royal Advisor level, including your name in the book.
The initial campaign goal is what we need to order 100 print copies of the book and pay for your rewards (and Kickstarter fees and taxes). Anything we make over $1500 means that we have to give you more in return, right? It also means that we'll have money left over to set aside for an audiobook release of The Peacock King, as well as possibly hire out for some professional typesetting services (which would give us more time to work on the story itself). In any case, we have some goals in mind if we exceed the $1500 dollar mark - here's what you all get when we get there.
UNLOCKED! $2000 - Double Bookmarks! That's right, if you're in a reward tier that gets you the Gerald bookmark, you will receive a matching Lyric bookmark!
UNLOCKED! $2500 - Peacock King becomes not just a book, but an illustrated book. At this level we will put four illustrations into the book, which will be included in the print AND ebook editions!
UNLOCKED! $3000 - We will include an official Poet Badge button with every reward that includes a printed book! Show everyone you meet that you're a word-mage who is not to be trifled with. (We will also make the button available as an add-on for backers who only want ebooks.)
UNLOCKED! $3500 - The book gets another illustration, for a total of five illustrations. To celebrate, everyone who receives a 6x9" print will get a 5x7" print of one of the illustrations.
UNLOCKED! $4000 - Everyone backing at a level where they get a poster as a reward will also get a second poster of the story map, which will show where all of this takes place and label important locations.
UNLOCKED! $4500 - TRIPLE BOOKMARK MADNESS. If you get a Gerald bookmark, now you get a matching Lyric bookmark AND a matching bookmark of Ebrelle, the Peacock King himself.
UNLOCKED! $5000 - You have kicked this campaign so hard that the story got bigger! At this level we will send every backer a Kickstarter-exclusive short story that will be a prequel to the book. It will be distributed electronically in epub/mobi/PDF format.
UNLOCKED! $6000 - Everyone who receives a Poet Badge button will also get an Armed Badge button.
UNLOCKED! $7000 - The Peacock King gets another illustration, for a total of six! Backers who receive 6x9" prints will get another print, for a total of three prints - one 6x9" of the Peacock King color portrait and two 5x7" prints of our favorite book illustrations.
$8000 - Backers who receive 6x9" prints will now get a set of 5x7" prints of all six illustrations in addition to their Peacock King color portrait!
$9000 - Another bookmark is nigh! A Faun bookmark will join the forces of the Gerald, Lyric and Ebrelle bookmarks. That means the bookmark backers get four bookmarks!
$10000 - Every backer at the Courtyard Gambler level and above will receive a beautiful Kickstarter-exclusive challenge coin bearing the seal of Audiva Rocale, the Peacock King's empire.
I wanted to keep the sections above easy to read, so full previews of the art for the rewards go here. We'll update this section as the campaign goes on and the art is finished. For instance, only the lineart for the poster is done so far, so we'll post the colors here when they're done. (That's why the thumbnail has a simple gradient right now. That'll change. We work pretty fast!)
COMING SOON: Preview of the Ebrelle bookmark!
Keep an eye on this section for a preview of what the book cover will look like!
Risks and challenges
Since we already have a final draft, we're on target to go to print in June. All that's left is copy editing and layout, and then we have our finished manuscript. We've allowed a few months for that, and it should be enough. So the book's release will only get thrown off if some unplanned catastrophe happens. In the event that Ragnarok throws off our schedule, we'll keep all our backers up-to-date on that, and I imagine it'd only throw things off by about a month.
We are printing through Createspace. We have not released a book commercially through it before, but we have completed a private project through Createspace that was very similar to Peacock King Book One, down to sizing and approximate length. Basically, we've already successfully printed a book through Createspace, so we know how to do that. Createspace doesn't tend to have delays since it has a distributed printing network, so we don't anticipate any problems on the printing end. We'll go through a proofing process to make sure you get the best possible printed books.
When it comes to ebooks, we have a bit of experience compiling ebook files and we also have experts to consult. Irk is a professional graphic designer. The ebook will be in good hands. We don't anticipate any problems.
Most print rewards will be mailed with a book, but we expect the production on prints, posters and bookmarks will be done sooner than the books. We both have print shop experience, so we don't anticipate any problems with the files we'll submit to the printers. Delays in printing these rewards are unlikely. We'd like to get the bookmark-only (or ebook and bookmark) backers' rewards out early since it's likely we'll have them before June and we won't be waiting on printed books for them. We'll keep you posted.
I have set the rewards that include a deck of cards to ship in July, since a playing card deck is a bit complicated and we want to have time to make sure we get everything right. I'll keep backers posted if this timeline changes to be earlier or later.
The special book box packages will require some craftsmanship, but they should send out at the same time as the rest of the rewards. We already have the base boxes purchased so it's just a matter of decorating them and then filling them with goodies!
