About this project
Hi! Iris Jay here! I've been putting comics on the Internet for over a decade now, most notably my previous graphic novel Epiphany. Since 2014, I've been working on a new webcomic series about queer hackers called Crossed Wires, and while it's nowhere near finished, I'm excited to announce that we're releasing Chapters 00 and 01 in print! But not without YOUR help, readers.
Crossed Wires is about two young hackers attending the same Pacific Northwest technical college: Theresa, a cool, calculating pro, and Alan, a mouthy but passionate novice. They start as enemies in Chapter 00 ("The Dark Spectrum") when Alan tries to join Theresa's elite-level hacker gang, but in Chapter 01 ("A Treatise On Optics") a serious goof-up forces them to work together against an Austrian information security superstar. Alan and Theresa couldn't be more different, but cyberspace is a cruel city, and they'll need to help each other to survive swordfights, virtual locust swarms, fancy dress parties, Intro to Creative Writing, and more!
ALSO, HEY, BONUS: Nearly all of the main cast are queer in some way, shape or form! Alan and Theresa are both trans, and we've got secondary characters of all sorts of genders and orientations. I always feel a little weird marketing this point, because it's a flimsy move to sell a book based on representation alone, BUT I've tried to weave the characters' queerness into the narrative in a low-key, natural way. Crossed Wires isn't just a love letter to cyberpunk schlock (THOUGH IT MOST DEFINITELY IS THAT), it's also a story about growing up and exploring identity in online spaces. Information technology has changed how we socialize and self-actualize, and it's been a paradigm shift for the queer community in particular, both in good ways and bad. (But I'd like to think mostly good!) I'm an NB trans femme person myself-- bit of a mouthful, I know-- and with Crossed Wires I wanted to write an off-the-wall action story that also feels a little more reflective of my own experiences, as well as those of my friends.
ANYWAYS, BOOK STATS: 240 pages! Sturdy perfect-bound paperback! Black and white on the inside, color on the outside! Chapters 00 and 01 in their entirety, touched up and remastered for print! Includes two bonus sections: CORE DUMP, featuring process sketches and notes by me, and GUEST ACCESS, featuring guest art, comics and prose from a variety of talented artist friends! Made of real wood pulp! Won't cause eyestrain from hours of viewing, unlike the online version! Rectangular! THERE IS LITERALLY NO END TO HOW MANY GOOD QUALITIES CROSSED WIRES VOL. 1 WILL HAVE WHEN IT GETS PRINTED. And if that's not enough, we have some all-new merchandise to offer as perks for this campaign too, from buttons to enamel pins to bookplates to YES, TOTE BAGS, we have tote bags, finest hallmark of all high-quality fundraisers. Check out the sidebar on this page for more information about those!
Pre-order now! Help us bring the first installment of the Crossed Wires saga into meatspace, and soon YOU can meet it in YOUR space! Get it?? GET IT????
*********************** STRETCH GOAL ALERT!! ************************
With just three days left, we've hit our goal of $6,000! Now let's see if we can push it even further with some neat stretch goals!
- If we can make it to $6,500 by the end of the campaign, I'll put the chosen name of every single person who supported on an acknowledgements page in the back. Yes, you can be immortalized in the book itself, regardless of what tier you backed at!
- If we can make it to $7,000 by the end of the campaign, I'll add an Annotations section to the back of the book! This was something I was planning on doing but had to cut for time and space constraints. However, if we can get far enough to cover the cost of sticking extra pages back in the book, I can add in a whole bunch of nifty behind-the-scenes notes that flesh out the world of Crossed Wires!
- If we can make it to $7,500 by the end of the campaign, I'll include a campaign-exclusive set of collectible postcards with EVERY PHYSICAL ORDER! Send them to your friends with weird messages written on them... or just frame them and hang them up on the walls of your home! Too completely cool!!
- If we get even further than that... I'll make up some new stretch goals! (Dare I whisper... HARDCOVER???)
Risks and challenges
I'll be honest: I've successfully crowdsourced and fulfilled two books before (Super Comics Vol. 1 in 2012 and Epiphany in 2013), but never with a goal as high as this one. Partially this is because this is volume one of three; people generally buy the first book in a series the most, so I want to make sure I have a decent back stock to keep selling for at least the entirety of the comic's run. We're aiming to print 500 copies to start off, but I may make the print run larger if there's enough demand from this campaign!
In addition, I also want to make sure I budget properly and print this book professionally. I'll be using a cost-effective, reliable offset publisher I've used in the past, Walcott (formerly 360 Digital Books), and I'm setting significant amounts aside for shipping, fulfillment, and taxes.
I'm hoping to have fulfillment totally completed by the end of January 2017, so you should receive your book either during or immediately after then. In the (hopefully very unlikely) event we're unable to hit our goal, I'll reattempt the fundraiser later in 2017 with more of a modest scope (300 copies, not as much merchandise). It's not ideal, but I really want to see this book printed!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
