Art Contest

Posted by iqSoup (Creator)

Happy Labor Day to all!!!

Last night at precisely 11:09 PM (AZ time anyway) something momentous occurred: WE PASSED THE 50% FUNDING MARK!!! Yeeehaw!!! Since then we've seen a huge surge in new backers--we are SO excited! Age of Grit is now at 200 backers!

We'd like to offer a warm welcome to our new backers and thank everyone for making all this happen! I truly can't say how much I appreciate all your support. We still have some ground to cover but hopefully we can continue forward with the same gusto!  Oh and if you haven't yet, please up vote us over on Greenlight--it would help AOG a lot!

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the Age of Grit Art Contest!!! You've given us so much and it's time for us to give a little back!

Send us your Age of Grit fan art! Your entry can be in any medium--illustration, animation, photography, pixel art, finger paint, lego etc. Your image just needs to look like it came from the AOG world. So anything involving the Wild West, steampunk, or airships will do. It could be a possible character from the world, an airship design, a steampunk cowboy town, or anything else that might belong in AOG. It could even be AOG's main character made out of spaghetti.

Make sure to read our campaign to get an idea of what The West is like. Make sure the technology is limited to steam power and clockwork--no laser guns, warp drives, or cybernetic dinosaurs. Anything industrial-looking, rugged, dusty, beat up, or gritty is a plus! If you have any questions or want to run anything by us then feel free to shoot us a message.

To participate just email your image to with the subject "Age of Grit Art Contest." Make sure to include your full name and a short description of your piece. Also include your alias if you'd rather we use that and any blog, Twitter, Tumblr, or website you'd like us to link to if we post your submission. We will post the entries we really like on the iqSoup Facebook page and Twitter account. And of course feel free to share your entry around social media!  Some of the stand outs will be featured in future Kickstarter updates. If we really like your entry, we'll even try to incorporate it into the actual game!

We will pick exactly one winner and one runner up. We'll be looking for the entry we feel best represents the unique world of AOG. We will look kindly on particularly creative and outside the box entries.

Please show some love to our friends from around Kickstarter! Got some really cool campaigns for you--hope you find them intriguing!

Hard West

Hard West is a really awesome looking cowboy tactical combat game. While Age of Grit's combat takes place in the skies, Hard West explores all the Wild West shooting coolness that can happen down on the ground. There's even a little steampunk thrown in the mix--check out this wicked awesome shotgun!

They only have 4 days left so hurry over and see what you think!

Woolfe is a gorgeous retelling of the age old story of Little Red Ridding Hood! This time around she's no helpless victim--they gave her a mean looking axe and some rather impressive kung fu skills. The fantasy world is just dripping with character and has this perfect twisted-fairy-tale feel to it. It seems very cinematic--kind of reminds me of Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons. Certainly seems much better than the last Little Red Ridding Hood game I played...

They're also down to the final stretch--just 3 days to go! Go help 'em out if you can! :D

Super World Karts

Super World Karts has to be the silliest game I've seen in a long time. Take Super Mario Karts for SNES and replace all the Nintendo characters with all kinds of indie game characters. You can play characters from Aegis Defenders, Fist of Awesome...even the guy from Canabalt. There's a big emphasis on multiplayer--looks like it could be blast to play with a couple of friends.

Culina - Hands in the Kitchen

Culina Kitchen is a visual novel / restaurant simulator. Ever since Dino Park Tycoon I've loved these business simulator type games! And this one adds in some RPG elements and NPC interaction into the mix. It seems like the relationships you develop with other characters are really tied into the restaurant operating mechanics. There will be a lot of detailed customization of your restaurant and some good in game progression.

The Stronghold

Posted by iqSoup (Creator)

We're making a big push to get Age of Grit to the 50% mark! Please keep sharing the campaign--post on Facebook, Twitter, and wherever you can! We greatly appreciate all the support!

Shortly we'll be hold an Age of Grit art/photo contest! It should be a lot of fun so stay tuned for that!

Thanks to all of you the AOG Greenlight campaign is doing quite well! It's still an uphill battle (we're competing with thousands of other games) but things are looking optimistic. If you haven't done so yet, hop on over to Greenlight and give Age of Grit a big YES vote!

Rather than meeting a new AOG character, today we'll be visiting one of the many towns of The West: The Stronghold.

Nestled in the west mountains of the Guild Lands, The Stronghold is an underground city built inside an immense, hollowed out section of Mount Redemption. For over a century this site has been one of the largest producers of coal in The West. All day every day the cavern floor is crowded with pick-axe wielding miners and steam-powered digging machines of all shapes and sizes. Every so often one hears the deafening BOOM of dynamite blasting through a stubborn section of rock. Add to that the incessant din of metal striking rock, engines roaring, drills boring into the earth--it's enough to drive one mad.

The upper portion of the cavern is usually swarming with airships flying about. Built around the entire inner rim is a docking ring where ships can land, load up with coal, and disembark. The city itself--housing units, stores, saloons and such--is a spiderweb of smaller tunnels that start at the docking ring and stretch out deep into the heart of the mountain.

It's time to go back to the past and see some awesome games from around Kickstarter that take cues from a bygone age of gaming.  Please check them out and show 'em some love!

Hive Jump

I must say, Hive Jump is something really special--I highly recommend checking it out! With a gorgeous 16-bit style, Hive Jump hearkens to the visuals of classics like Super Metroid. I'm a sucker for well executed pixel art and this game doesn't disappoint.  With its action-packed, fast-paced running and gunning gameplay, Hive Jump looks like it'll be a blast! And it's a co-op game so what's not to love!  They only have 9 days left to reach their goal so hurry on over there and if you like what you see please show your support with a healthy pledge!

Here's from the campaign: "In the 24th century, humanity is at war with a hostile alien race. Outnumbered a million to one, mankind's only hope of survival is the J.U.M.P. Corps. Its mission is to fight the alien menace hive by hive and planet by planet. Hive Jump is one part Spelunky, one part XCOM, and all parts alien ass-kicking. You and your friends assume the role of JUMPERS, and blast your way through subterranean alien hives in run-and-gun 2D platforming action. Kill aliens, avoid traps, collect resources, and defeat the hive queen lurking at the bottom of the hive to complete the JUMP."

Gryphon Knight

Gryphon Knight is another retro styled gem. They only have THREE DAYS LEFT so check 'em out soon or it'll be too late! Clearly a lot of love has gone into Gryphon Knight--the 16-bit graphics will really make your head turn! The gameplay's similar to classic shoot 'em up games like R-Type--only with a gryphon-riding knight rather than a spaceship. All around it shows a lot of polish. I sure wish this had been on SNES when I was a kid!

From the campaign: "Gryphon Knight Epic is a 2D Medieval Shoot’em up currently in development for Windows, MAC & Linux. It tells the story of Sir Oliver and Áquila, an accomplished knight and his loyal gryphon that are forced back to adventure once again. The gameplay has a blend of classic shoot’em ups, exploration and, mainly, unique duels against bosses."

Kaptain Brawe 2

Kaptain Brawe 2 breaths new life into the dried out corpse of point and click adventure games.  After their hay day in the 90s, point and click adventure games died off completely and the genre became a dusty relic of an age gone by.  I for one loved those old games and it's good to see traditional point and click games coming back! I have especially fond memories of Day of the Tentacle and this one really weird, creepy, DOS game called The Secret Island of Dr. Quandary. (Does anyone else remember that one???) Kaptain Brawe 2 takes the gameplay style and distinct sense of humor of those old games and adds modern touches like gorgeous 3D graphics and fully voice acted characters.  If you're interested, they even have a free demo you can download and check out.

From the campaign: "Kaptain Brawe 2: A Space Travesty is a sequel to the traditional humorous point and click adventure from 2010 - Kaptain Brawe: A Brawe New World. The game and its whimsical characters, as well as its colourful and detailed hand-drawn visual style, were inspired by legendary Lucas Arts and Sierra adventure games of old, such as Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle and Space Quest!"

The Gunner

Posted by iqSoup (Creator)

We are now ONE THIRD funded!!!  Yeeeehaw!!!  Thank you for all the support!  We still have the last two thirds to go so keep spreading the word!  Also, if you haven't yet, make sure to LIKE us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter.

As of this morning Age of Grit is on Steam Greenlight!  Getting Age of Grit on Steam is arguably just as important to its ultimate success as getting fully funded here on Kickstarter.  So please head on over to the AOG Greenlight page and smash that YES button--it should only take about 30 seconds.

Age of Grit has also been selected as a Kickstarter Staff Pick!!!  This is a great honor and should help the campaign get some attention.  Thanks Kickstarter staff!

Today we'll meet the Gunner--the man in charge of the ship's armory and various weapons systems.

The Gunner served under the Captain during the Red War. At the time he was only 13. His parents and most of his extended family were killed during the bloody conflicts leading up to the war. The Captain took him under his wing and was a father figure of sorts for the boy. He was stationed in the machine gun bay of the Captain's battle frigate and quickly grew to be a skilled and deadly accurate gunner, out-shooting those more than twice his age. After the war was over, he and the Captain went their separate ways, but recently their paths crossed again and he came to work for the Captain manning the guns on his smuggling ship.

The Gunner has a great sense of humor and loves a good laugh. He is undeniably brilliant when it comes to the care, operation, and construction of most small arms, explosives, or heavy armaments. His mangy dog Cyclops lives aboard the ship, in spite of regular protests from the Captain.

Make sure to check out some of our friends from around Kickstarter.  They're all great campaigns that I'm sure you'll find interesting!

Your goal is to vanquish your foes and accumulate the most victory points through seven turns of play. Help us to document and share the historical changes in video game sound from the beep through to today."

The Pilot

Posted by iqSoup (Creator)

Well we've sure had a great first couple of days--we've soared past the 25% mark and we're still going strong! Thanks everyone for all the support, I can't tell you how appreciated it is! We're doing great but still have a long way to go. Keep spreading the word and sharing the campaign with everyone you can!

In the body of the campaign we introduced you to the Captain--the main character of Age of Grit. As the campaign rolls on we'll meet some more characters. Lets start with the Pilot.

The Pilot can be a little cocky but generally a sweet and kindhearted girl. Few in The West could rival her skill with an aircraft's controls. She grew up on a small farm in the countryside of the Liberty Compact. Bored with the slow pace of life she sought entertainment however she could and quickly took a liking to airships.

By age 8 she was flying her pa's old four-prop scout plane in the township fair--doing loops and barrel rolls for the cheering crowds below. She became a bit of a minor celebrity--anyone from her general region will likely recognize her name. As a teenager she started flying larger craft and got frequent work plowing fields and harvesting crops with an old Case 42 Sky Tractor. At age 18, quite restless and tired of farm life, she left home to work for an old friend of her father's: the Captain.

We've been combing through Kickstarter--looking for other campaigns y'all might like.  For today we steampunk round up!  Check out these other projects, you won't disappointed!
