Dear backers: If you have any questions, please contact us at As we mentioned in the update, it's difficult to track each of your requests from this message board. We believe most of your issues have been resolved except some rare cases. For example, we are still waiting for the int'l shipping fee from few backers. Please check your email. And we cannot deliver your iPen because you only made a $15 pledge.

We did mess up some of our backers' pledges. We do apologize for the mistakes.

I am still having issues with my ipen, there must be an issue with the pen itself, I would like to mail it back for a replacement.

Just received an invoice from Fedex for 31 euros a good month after receiving the ipen... This is actually quite an expensive product (150$ in total vs 79$ initially anticipated, excluding shipping) which does not work very well and with which I'm struggling to get used to.
Are there any other app apart from Ghostwriter (very bad) and Goodnotes (better but not great) which support Ipen?
In the meantime, I reverted to my old Wacom Bambo (30 euros) (works well with apps where you can zoom in).

@Kenneth thnx , when i asked the question here i thought about it and turned it off, still sometimes the screen moves

Wow, cregle seems to have disappeared? They need to address concerns before developers start pulling ipen support.

    13. Lowyck Franky on April 3, 2012

I received my iPen today , i use goodnotes but the problem is the palm rejection doesn't work
very well, if i move my hand a little bit , or the program stops or something else opens.
Any one having the same problem ?

    14. Pete on April 3, 2012

I'm not complaining but just want to know how to calabrate the pen as currently no matter what program I use the pen is anything from 3 to 5 mm away from the actuall ink that results, you can't take notes with that variance :)

    15. Enea Gjoka on April 2, 2012

I don't know why everyone keeps complaining about the iPen its never gonna be pen and paper but its pretty dam good IMO. I am a med student and take a ton of notes and used to waste so much paper before the iPen now with GoodNotes all that is history. The calibration is a lil annoying till u learn how to do it but its much better that using ur finger or the other styli out there and GoodNotes is still in beta so it will get better.

What I would love is a pass-through port for charging my iPad while taking notes then this thing would be perfect.

    16. Pete on April 2, 2012

Ho do I calibrate my ipen it appears each program I use either freezes or when they do work the lines etc are about 3 or more mm from the pen nib this is so frustrating its almost not worth using

My iPen got lost by USPS. No Answer from Cregle to various mails so far. I cannot recommend this and will file a complaint.

    18. Andrew C on April 2, 2012

Have to agree with the other comments here. The iPen is a great concept, but unfortunately not very well executed. I cannot recommend this product to anyone.

    19. Jen Yates on March 31, 2012

I had to pay a UK customs surcharge which was annoying but not surprising really. Cregle could have got around it had they labeled differently though.

As to the iPen, it works pretty well. Not wacom perfectly, but pretty well. It's terrible (so far) in Ghostwriter though but passable in GoodNotes. It does seem to be a bit erratic though with it seeming to drift off calibration after some use. I'd like it to be supported in more apps of course, especially in Penultimate (my normal go-to app)

The hardwares fine. The packaging was great, the dock-dongle solid and the pen light plastic but reasonable for the cost. The pen feels VERY cheap compared to a wacom tablet pen, but it's not a Wacom pen!

I'd suggest that Cregle look into how to best support their app developers with the required UI to supply quick access to calibration. Say a single tap to bring up a calibration screen with a grid of (minimum) 9 calibration targets, from which we can tap four or more and be done with calibration and keep on working.

From what I've seen so far it's been up to the app developers to roll their own calibration options and how to access them. Cregle should come up with a 'best practice' solution.

In summary: It's a shame it's not perfect but it's usable and certainly a LOT better than trying to write small and legibly with a capacitive stylus or finger.

Tested with iPad, iPad 2 + iPad 3.

    20. KP371 on March 31, 2012

loved my iPen but now it no longer works. am waiting to hear back from Cregle about a replacement, however I am worried about them not replying like in instances below. The communication of this company has a lot to be desired....

Hopefully they reply back otherwise I will no longer recommend this product and I will have blown $80.

    21. BarryG on March 31, 2012

It was so cool to use my Ipen on a PDF contract to initial and sign and date, all very accurate and easy. So many complaints, but for me this is the best pen I've seen on the market and I'm hoping for some updates that will make it even better.

I really backed this because of the promised procreate support, I even finally bought the app in anticipation so really not happy that this has been dropped and we have no recourse regarding not getting what was promised.

I find that Good Notes is the best so far. Ghostwriter is a joke, but maybe in the future it will create a fix. Since I'm stuck with iPen, at least one app works like I was led to believe ALL apps would.

    27. denise on March 28, 2012

One thing I found not to my satisfaction is the point on the screen is couple of pixel away from the tip making the finer movement bit guesstimate... =__=

And one more thing. Mine arrived with the centre metal piece separate from the housing.
I think this is supposed to be replaceable but does it come in loose like mine in the packaging?
As the packaging itself was very clean I don't think mine came loose during the intransit?

I've been using it on my iPad 3 and Goodnotes and it has been excellent. Goodnotes needs some improvements automatically turning off 5 finger gestures and better palm protection. I do need to calibrate it 1 or 2 times a day though.

      Hey Crecle!
I read the news what procreate do not support iPen. It sounds too bad!
I bought iPen why Procreate would support iPen.
Will OTHER APPS(Artrage or other painting apps) support iPen?

    33. Grove Media Studios on March 27, 2012

Perhaps we should just fill a class action lawsuit as an earlier commenter mentioned. Cregle wants to ignore us, I think it would be quite a bit harder to ignore us when they are severed a subpoena. Dont forget, you can full a refund request via amazon payments or dispute the charges via your credit card.

    37. Hong on March 26, 2012

      @Torsten, Thanks for the comment.
I already searched them but I still want to know which pins are used for iPen. The extender adapter what I have now has same layout of this picture, , which has only usb connection. It seems there are more pins required.
Maybe this topic is not about iPen, but about iPad accessory protocol. But I’m really new to here, and hope to know which pins should be connected. Pin21 (serial enable) , pin12-13(serial Tx,Rx) for serial communication?

Really bad: procreate dropped iPen & XO support: "he only items that did not make it into 1.6, was iPen and X0 support. ... The Stylus can only be used in Portrait mode with the IR dongle facing the upward. Any other orientation will cause significant calibration issues ... These styluses are going to be great for note taking, but they are not ready for artists."

@Jongman: 30-pin dock connector pinout: or

    40. Hong on March 26, 2012

Does anybody know which pins of iPad dock are used for communicating between iPad and iPen?
The iPen receiver was not working with my iPad with case, so I just bought a dock extension adapter to connect them. But it was not working because the pinout of adapter is different to iPen receiver. I should have checked the pinout... well now I need to find which pins are used in iPen receiver. Does anybody have some ideas?

Looks like Procreate is dropping iPen support:

"We felt the iPen did not meet our standard, for app support." Ouch, even they think it's junk.

I would like to come out for Cregle's defense too. I just spent the whole day taking notes in lecture on Goodnote with it and it worked just as I hoped it would. What a relief from zooming in and out with capacitive styluses!

      on March 23, 2012

@ Evan - I'm with you on this. I have had iPen a couple of weeks now and it works just as I expected. I recognise the slight delay in ghostwritier but we know a fix is coming for this but ibis and goodnotes work flawlessly. You just need to write/draw in a consistent way when holding the pen throughout the screen, I hardly ever re-calibrate now.

My only gripe is the import tax marked as full price and not as a gift, that could of easily been avoided if the invoice was for what I actually paid etc.

Looking forward for "noteshelf" being updated in April!

I am baffled by the complaints I keep seeing. I have been using the IPen for almost two weeks and have been rather pleased. And that was with Ghostwriter. I fired up Goodnotes a couple of days ago and it seems even better. For a startup device this is pretty good. Only issue I have is that I lost my pen top. Hope my 4 year old just took off with it.
With 1700 backers I have to think there are more than a few who are happy with the device.

    46. Mark Wickens on March 22, 2012

The iPen seems to record my writing well on the new iPad with GoodNotes. But it's completely unusable due to the distracting click click click as I lift and lower the pen. Is it possible that a “refill” (odd term -- and why did we get three of them?) with a softer tip would help?

I'm sure Cregle has gone into hiding with all of this negative feedback, hence none of us who've emailed them receive a response. Oh well, live and learn.

    48. Greg Dawson on March 22, 2012

The feel of glass will never be the same as paper for tactile feedback. But that will never change when using a tablet.

I think it's as good as it will get.
