Walking is great exercise, but when it’s part of your commute, it can take time and energy that might be better put to use elsewhere. The Glion SmartScooter is designed to be a simple, lightweight, affordable way to glide through the parts of your journey you used to hike, from the distant parking lot or mass transit station directly to your door.
Performance meets affordability
We began brainstorming the Glion SmartScooter with what we called the S.A.F.E. design principle: the ultimate product would be Safe, Affordable, Fun, and Efficient. What we came up with was the most practical and affordable last-mile transportation solution on the market. The Glion SmartScooter is lightweight and foldable, yet glides the average adult up to 17 miles at up to 15 miles per hour, enabling users to arrive at their final destination relaxed and refreshed and much sooner than if they had walked.
The Glion SmartScooter pairs high-output 36V Lithium-ion batteries with a powerful 250W brushless electric hub motor, and houses them in a sleek, sturdy, aircraft-aluminum standup scooter frame. Weighing only 26 pounds, the SmartScooter can be folded in seconds to store in the trunk, carry onto mass transit or store in a closet. Among its many advanced features are smooth-riding, never-flat tires, and an electronic brake located within the hub.
What makes the Glion SmartScooter unique is that by focusing on simplicity and efficiency, we created an advanced light electric vehicle (LEV) with comparable performance to similar last-mile solutions costing twice as much or more.
End boring commutes
Stand-up electric scooters are fun — that’s why you can purchase them in the toy section at Walmart. But, the Glion SmartScooter is no toy. With all the fun it provides, it is an ideal transportation tool for students, urban residents, outlying parking lots, and for running errands, sightseeing and just getting around your neighborhood.
Unlike bikes which can sometimes be difficult to deal with on public transit, the Glion SmartScooter folds to the size of a small suitcase and unfolds in seconds. With a light kick you are ready to glide on. The Glion SmartSooter is ruggedly built for years of steady use. The aircraft-grade aluminum, is powder coated to resist corrosion and the state-of-the-art Lithium-ion battery is located in a water-resistant compartment and features an advanced battery management system with multiple safety stops. The battery charges in 3.25 hours and has a cycle life of 1000+ charges, for an average lifespan of 3-5 years.
The Glion SmartScooter employs electronic water resistant controls with wires hidden within the frame to maintain the sleek look and folding ease. On the right, a twist-grip accelerator makes it go; on the left, a twist-grip brake makes it stop. An easy to read handlebar-mounted battery indicator keeps track of battery life and there’s even a handy USB charging port for your mobile phone.
Riding it feels like gliding down a gentle, endless ski slope. It’s simple, reliable, clean and quiet; it’s sturdy, durable and built to last. It’s also remarkably affordable. The Glion SmartScooter costs a little more than the electric scooters you’ll find in toy stores, but less than half of what other light electric vehicles with similar features cost.

Our goal was to create an affordable last-mile transportation solution that could reduce or eliminate the need for many commuters to use their cars. The Glion SmartScooter can cleanly run up to 500 miles on about a dollar’s worth of electricity; if all commuters had one, the impact could be significant.
At an anticipated retail price of $550, the Glion SmartScooter is about half the cost of comparable LEVs. However, for supporters of our Kickstarter campaign, we are offering ion SmartScooters delivered in December, 2014 for only $399 (not including shipping). We can hand-assemble prototypes, like the ones you see on this page, for about $1,500. However, to achieve our long-term affordability goal, we need to create dies and moldings and purchase the equipment necessary to enter into large-scale production.
Support us now and save $150 off the initial estimated retail price. A contribution of $399 ensures you one of the first Glion SmartScooters off the production line in December 2014; a contribution of $200 now ensures you’ll be able to buy at the $399 price, even after initial introduction.

Jeff Kong and Robert McCormick met three years ago working on a project in the renewable energy industry. Wei Chang, an electrical engineer, joined the team shortly thereafter. The three of us share a concern for long-term sustainability of the planet and recognize that maintaining the status quo does not value future generations. We owe those generations more — like a campsite, we want to leave this place better than the way we found it.
We learned about the potentials of lithium-ion batteries in the transportation sector several years ago and began pursuing a last mile solution using lithium-ion batteries shortly thereafter. We believe that electrifying the transportation sector creates some of the greatest opportunities to reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality.
Over the last two years, we have gone through seven SmartScooter prototypes and have tested batteries, motors, controllers and other components for over 10,000 miles. The Glion SmartScooter we bring to the Kickstarter project is the ultimate result of our research and effort.
Our plan forward
We are a small team, and to this point, we have focused on design and component integration. We have formed relationships with established professional companies in the industry to help us with sourcing, mass production, fulfillment and logistics if we can prove to them that we have volume and demand.
Our timeline for production is as follows:
September — Introduce ion SmartScooter at Interbike 2014. Launch Kickstarter campaign. Execute supplier agreements.
October —Procurement of volume production equipment, raw materials and components. Continue to build handcrafted ion SmartScooters for shipment.
November — Complete first production run of 200 Glion SmartScooters. Ship handmade Glion SmartScooters to backers.
December — Complete second production run of 200 Glion SmartScooters. Ship the first production run of Glion SmartScooters to backers.
January — Begin volume production and ship the second production run of Glion SmartScooters.
February -- Ramp up on volume
March — Ship Glion SmartScooters from volume production to backers.
Risks and challenges
Risks and Challenges
We have spent the last two years perfecting the design and production readiness of the Glion SmartScooter, and have put 10,000 miles on our test units to ensure the safety and durability of our design. Although we are confident we can provide quality products to our customers, we recognize there are challenges ahead of us.
Assuming a successful Kickstarter campaign, we need to open major moldings which can take time depending on the level of complexity or materials involved. To mitigate this risk, we are working with industry-leading suppliers with successful track records. We have also opened some of the smaller and/or less expensive moldings already so that we could build up experience and confidence in this area. We may also have some minor product modifications before final delivery based on feedback from customers that may lead to some delay, but we are confident that with the assistance of our external partners, we can render minor adjustments without impacting final delivery.
Sourcing and fulfillment
Even a simple light electric vehicle involves many components and services that we source from other suppliers, and supplier credibility and quality is always a challenge in the world of manufacturing. We leverage the influence our manufacturing partner has over component and service providers to ensure a steady stream of quality components. Although our partners have strong track records working with their suppliers for many years, we’ve separately identified multiple suppliers for the same components during our two-year design phase. We have established testing methodologies and metrics for our components, and have quality control programs established for volume production.
Any time volume production is involved problems can occur. We’ve chosen a stage-by-stage approach by partnering with experienced commercialization and logistics teams and planning only 200 units for each of the first two production runs.
Our partners, who have years of experience delivering excellent products in large quantities, have enough confidence that our design will be liked by customers that they are willing to work with a small team at very reasonable price. There may be some surprises as we begin manufacturing, but we believe any challenges will be overcome by combining experience and dedication, and our overall goal of making the best possible product.
