About this project
UPDATE!!! I hit my goal and am now at $1520 for this project. But I want to take it FURTHER! If I can raise $1800, I can secure a table at Geek Media Expo in October. This convention is one of the bigger ones in the Nashville area and would be something I'd love to go to. Problem is--it's $300 for a table there. So if I can get to $1800, by the end of this kickstarter campaign, I can go ahead and get my table there! Any funds surpassing that much will go toward future conventions and printing fees. I would hope to be able to attend the San Diego Comic Con next year, if possible! So keep on sharing this kickstarter with your friends!
About Magia High (the story):
Magia High follows the story of 15 year old Megan Michaels as she discovers that she is unlike other people her age. In fact, Megan is actually half-angel. Upon this discovery, her full angel father takes her to the secret realm of Magia and enrolls her in a school for magical, mythical, and legendary creatures: Magia High.
What Megan learns on her first day is that this school isn’t like the magical schools she’s seen in the movies or read about in books. The creatures here act just like normal 21st century kids. You could be taking anatomy with a cyclops, algebra 2 with a wizard, or even PE with a fairy. From sporting the latest smartphone in class to trying to figure out what in the world an imaginary number is, Magia High is just like any other high school. Unfortunately, Megan also learns that there are those out there who would use her powers for evil, and those nefarious beings are closer to her in Magia High then she realizes...
About Magia High (the history):
Magia High was created in colaboration between myself (lead artist Annie Erskine) and my writer/best friend, Tabatha Hoffer in early 2011. We had teamed up as artist and writer to create the comic book studio Ionic Comics but hadn't found a story that would be our first story just yet. Eventually, after some brainstorming, we came up with a concept: A high school for ALL magical and mythical creatures but has the same educational standards of 21st century high schools. We always wondered why magical high schools never taught algebra 2 or heard of smart phones...We began to draft up character and story ideas and eventually we had created the universe of Magia High.
My name is Annie Erskine. I'm an illustrator/cartoonist/graphic designer based out of Bowling Green, KY. I've been drawing for as long as I could hold a pencil and have a sheer utter passion for cartoons and comics. Making a comic book was something I always wanted to do but never got around to it. From 2005 to 2011 I had a comic strip series in my high school and college newspaper of my hometown. I enjoyed it but wanted to do something deeper. Something more meaningful and interesting to read. Something long and ongoing. Finally I worked up the courage and put that first foot forward and founded Ionic Comics and began work on Magia High.
Times have been tough, however. Making comics is a time consuming gig. Between finish college (I graduated this past spring! Yaay!) working a full-time job, and volunteering my time as an organizer for a comic creator group to help amateur artists/writers get their ideas going, there was just never enough time to get everything done. But I kept on going and have finally finished issue 1!
How can you help?
Whether or not I get the funds I ask for on kickstarter, I will continue production of this comic. This money will help a LOT with advertisements, comic book convention table fees, swag for this kickstarter of course, and most importantly, printing costs! If I want to be able to have issue 1 printed and ready for sale for this year's Dragon*Con (which I have a table at), I will need to get at least $1500 to pay for a professional printing company (http://quickcomics.com/) to print my comics. If I can't get that minimum, I will have to keep saving up myself and probably won't be able to have Magia High physically for sale until early 2013. Even the smallest amount will help me in my endeavor! Please help me reach my minimum goal of $1500 :)!
Maybe, in time, if I do well enough with this kickstarter campaign to get printed versions published :)!
Basically, a sketch is something quick like pencil concept art, blue line art, etc. Nothing fully rendered as the artwork you see above but still awesome and fun. And yes--it is to each backer's preference. So once the project is finished, I will contact each of my backers who donated enough for artwork and see what all they would like. Keep in mind sketches are not super complicated so you will not be getting something like a fully rendered comic book drawing. :)
The digital sketches will be 5 inches wide by 8.5 inches tall (so half a piece of paper).
