Six women of color came together in 2018 to develop IO Literary Journal (IO Lit), a literary journal that intends to publish all forms of creative writing and artistic expression, including works that exceed conventional interpretations. IO Lit aims to showcase the experiences of all people, especially those in underrepresented groups whose voices are silenced in mainstream culture.
IO Lit's first volume (and those thereafter) will be available in print. As a burgeoning literary journal, IO is raising funds to set off start-up costs such as printing and fulfillment. Your supplemental contribution will help us make the inaugural volume of IO the best it can be. Our anticipated costs include:
- Book layout & design
- Printing of Volume 1
- Initial shipment of Volume 1
- Shipment to contributors, subscribers, and readers
- Creation & shipment of reward items
Below is a tentative timeline of our editing & publishing process:
Risks and challenges
Unlike other literary journals, IO does not have the backing of a university or other financial entity to provide us with the budget we need to keep us going. That being said, the freedom we retain by being our own bosses, we feel, is liberating and worth it.
Our biggest concern is sufficient funding. A lot of the costs associated with running a journal come from our own pockets, with your contributions playing a big role in keeping us running! The amount we raise will affect the size of the first volume, the creative aspects we want to implement, how many copies we can print, and the overall quality of the end product.
The biggest setback we may have will be delays in the reviewing process, production & design phase, or shipping. We hope to stick to the timeline we have set. Most of the editors are, or are soon to be, full-time graduate students. We also all work (some of us multiple jobs!) and we have some awesome moms in the mix, too. We are diverse and representative of many of our writers and artists, but that also means we are super busy.
We appreciate your support and patience during the next few months as we start working on putting the inaugural volume of IO together. We'll update you with any timeline changes and will ask your opinion on important creative aspects in the future!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
