Steam Early Access Tomorrow!

Posted by iocaine studios (Creator)

Tomorrow, January 14th at 1pm PST, Steam Bandits: Outpost will be on Steam Early access! :-D  Backers already in the alpha/beta test should already have their Steam keys for this.   The team is really excited and can't wait for all of the feedback.  We couldn't have gotten this far without you guys!

Check out this snazzy teaser trailer:

Thanks for listening guys, this was the first kickstarter I backed and been really looking forward to the game for a long time. Best of luck on steam, hope it is very successful and lets you continue making many more games!

Much appreciated :-) My policy on game development is that we are making a game for you guys, and it's our job to make as many of you happy as possible. Without you guys, we wouldn't have been able to get to this point, so we're immensely grateful :-)

Wow. I have to say I wasn't expecting such a rapid, honest, and effective response to the points a few of us raised. I really appreciate the solution, which can't have been an easy decision especially as its quite far from the original one you announced.

I think this will go a long way to placating any related grievances the backers may have been having, though I can only speak for myself, obviously.

      Thank you!

($5 Backer here) This sounds pretty cool. I can totally afford $15 for early access (especially since I have more than that left from that Steam gift card I was given by my Dad :P)
$50 I would have had to think about.

    5. iocaine studios 2-time creator on

Correct, all $10+ backers will have access within a few hours. I'll be sending out instructions soon :-)

    6. Chuck McGuire on

So just to be clear, any backer who donated $10+ should be expecting Steam keys for early access soon? Or is the alpha/beta somehow separate?

    7. iocaine studios 2-time creator on

I got some personal messages from backers that were very heartfelt and really supported the plan below. I'm going to move forward with this. Exciting times ahead! :-D

Thank you all for the awesome feedback! Don't worry about being honest with me, I really appreciate it and it's what I needed to hear.

How does this sound: Any backer who donated $10+ will get into the alpha/beta. Steam Early Access will be set to $15. We were planning on having some early access packs above the base amount, but we can scale those down as well to come in line with the $15.

      What do you guys think?

I'll add my discontent to the other comments. I backed at a level to get the game, but not beta. Now you're going to have it on steam where anyone can purchase, but a kickstarter backer cannot. Unless they pay....again.

Give all backers who qualified for a copy of the game steam keys now, don't make them wait after the already existing long wait.

I don't mean to come off like a jerk, but I think you're going to get creamed on Steam if you ask for $50 for early access. On the other hand, if you ask for, say, $25, people like me who gave you $30 18 months ago are going to be pretty mad.

You've put yourself between a rock and a hard place, but then back in summer of 2012 who knew Steam Early Access would become such a popular way of funding a game.

Clearly I'm biased, but I think you need to price early access at a point where you'll move units (and maybe you've higher profile than I think you are and $50 is the right price point) and let any backer who gave that much or more, into Early Access.

    11. Lloyd Adrian Devlin on

I may be biased since I'm in the tier below the beta tier, though I think its also worth remembering that the vast majority of backers are in the lower tiers that include the game but not the beta.

I feel as though, given the timescales suggested during the kickstarter, some people would have opted for just the game instead of the beta because it seemed like it was all going to be fairly soon, but that's something of a moot point now because it's done.

What has frustrated me most about this kickstarter, and really ruined my perception of the game despite previously being excited enough to back it, is the constant slipping schedule. I've read every reason that's been given but eventually its just not enough anymore. From your initial estimations the game will end up being, in reality, between a year and a half to two years late.

This hasn't been helped with the recent beta talk: betas have been advertised but then they weren't betas, they were alphas, or they weren't as open as people might have thought, or they were delayed. Beta talk began in kick starter, resurged around May last year and here we are again talking about a beta that backers still can't all get in on despite the release on steam and overall late delivery.

I can't be alone in this feeling of disappointment. I think that, given your initial release estimations, which we are now far beyond, its reasonable enough to open the beta to any full-game backers.

    12. iocaine studios 2-time creator on

Yeah, we're planning on setting it at $50.

Another thing I've been thinking about is letting in more backer. I've gotten a few messages from backers over the last few days asking if we could let the other backer tiers into the alpha/beta since we let the $40+ backers in several months ago. I'd like to let in more, but wouldn't want to upset the other backers.

      What do you guys think?

    13. Vaendryl on

so, you're going to sell early access on steam for 50 dollars? anything lower wouldn't be fair to backers after all.

    14. iocaine studios 2-time creator on

Well, I'd like to do whatever is fair to you guys. For backers that donated enough to get into the beta, they should absolutely have access. What would be the fair thing to do for backers that donated less than that?

      To recap our schedule:
      - Alpha: 1/14/14
      - Closed Beta: March
      - Open Beta: May
      - Launch: June

We might get stuff done sooner, but those are the realistic estimates.

So wait. The rest of the backers AREN'T getting access tomorrow, but you are opening it for sale to STEAM users?

    16. iocaine studios 2-time creator on

We pushed back our roadmap to accommodate the combat changes. Right now we're in Alpha, but should be in closed beta within a few months. Once we're well into closed beta, we'll open it up to the rest of the backers.

Is this the closed beta that all levels of backers will get access to, or is that still in the works?
