What is it?
Steam Bandits: Outpost will be a free-to-play town-building game harnessing elements from games like Civilization, Sim City, Animal Crossing, Tropico, and The Sims. This is NOT a Facebook game! We're making this game to finally give gamers a casual town-building game that won't nag your friends or stop you from playing unless you pay.
Our team loves playing games like Civ, but we've gotten pretty annoyed with how current games limit how much you can play without bugging your friends or spending your money. We want to make a free-to-play game that brings over the fun things from town-builders, but leaves behind the annoying stuff--and since we love games like Civilization, we're going to sprinkle in some cool features from non-casual games to push this genre forward!
Steam Bandits: Outpost will be a free-to-play game for iOS, Android, Mac, and PC. It has the following core features:
- Build up an outpost by constructing buildings that do different things.
- Harvest resources from those buildings.
- Use those resources to construct even more awesome buildings.
- Customize your buildings’ colors and addons to make your outpost feel truly unique!
- Select outfits for your character and choose from hundreds of combinations!
- Collect pets that you can customize to roam your outpost.
- Send airship captains out on missions to bring back rewards, and customize them too!
- Basically, customize practically EVERYTHING! (If you want. If not, that’s cool too.)
- Link up with your friends' outposts and captains for resource bonuses.
This game will NOT follow the “Pay-To-Continue-Playing” model. We really dislike that approach since it nickel & dimes the player that just wants to enjoy the game. We’re following the examples of League of Legends, Team Fortress 2, Tribes: Ascend, and Gaia Online for our pricing model since, well, those games are pretty awesome. Basically, if you want to get more outfits/accessories for your character/outpost, it will cost a small amount of money. This is a "Pay-To-Style" type of game. :-)
This game will be the first title in a series of interconnected games spanning different genres. The future games will include a League of Legends style co-op RPG, as well as an actiony flight sim style game akin to classics like Crimson Skies and Wing Commander. Steam Bandits: Outpost will be fully connected to those future games and introduce some cool cross-gaming features like "Baton Quests" (a quest that starts in one game, and spans the others), friend linking, and trading.
Our goal is to bring gamers together, regardless of the games they choose to play. If your friends are into other types of games, no matter what they play, you all can play together in the Steam Bandits world.
We'll probably have a separate Kickstarter campaign for those projects much later. This Kickstarter project is for the first game, Steam Bandits: Outpost.
We have 3 phases for this project. If we meet our funding goal, we'll be able to create the basic version of the game, which includes one island theme and few outfits, accessories, captains, and pets. If we get funded beyond that, we'll be able to create even more content, like additional island themes and more outfits/accessories/captains/pets!
The chart below shows the current progress:
For a more detailed explanation of what went into the art process of Steam Bandits: Outpost, be sure to watch the video at the top of the page. Otherwise, here’s a look at our concept art, done by the illustrious Lindsey Laney, J.D. Cerince, and Brianna Garcia.
Stratos has three main continents separated by great distances, with smaller land masses bridging the gaps. First and highest in altitude is the Northlands, which sees little sunlight and remains extremely cold year-round. At the other extreme and lowest in altitude is the Southlands, which receives the most sunlight and, in turn, heat. Last is the Midlands, situated between the north and south in both altitude, weather, and seasons.
The areas between these continents are smaller, ranging from habitable land masses to asteroid-like clusters called Stratoids. Stratoids often collide with one another, making their surfaces smooth, and because of the wildlife that manages to survive inside them, they also tend to be porous, filled with tunnels and caverns. There is only one area of stratoids known by name: the Badlands, a notoriously difficult-to-navigate cluster that is also rumored to house guilds of sky pirates.
More about the Tier Rewards
We're offering lots of great rewards to those generous enough to help us out.
All reward tiers offer "iocaine points". Here's how they break down:
- 10 iocaine points = 1 outfit piece/accessory = $1 USD
- 50 iocaine points = 1 full outfit or 1 pet = $5 USD
- 100 iocaine points = A second island theme = $10 USD
You can acquire the equivalent of iocaine points once the game comes out by completing special quests or purchasing them for real money.
Here’s some of the tier rewards:
How long will it take?
If we reach our funding goal, we'll be able to release this game before the end of the year, and conduct a beta test a month before then.
We decided to use the Unity engine for this game. It will enable us to focus more on content creation and allow us to deploy our game on multiple platforms with ease. Our team of programmers have already developed a working prototype in a relatively short amount of time thanks to the engine’s architecture; Unity is great!

Who are we?
Jason Fader is the Creative Director on Steam Bandits and President of Iocaine Studios. He started at Blizzard Entertainment 12 years ago and eventually moved onto Obsidian Entertainment, where he spent a fair amount of time until recently. His path in the industry has taken him through several roles, including QA, tools programmer, designer, team bartender, producer, writer, and several lead roles. He’s a huge fan of all things science fiction and loves crafting worlds from his imagination. A few games that have strongly influenced him are the Monkey Island series, Tribes, Privateer, Master of Orion, Command & Conquer, XCOM, and Civ. When Jason runs a game team, he sees everyone as his equal and family. He does everything he can to make their lives easier and places their well-being over the project 100% of the time. He’s fairly idealistic with his views on the industry and believes we can change the shape of it with the right attitude and process. Oh, and he loves cats and singing in Rock Band!
Lindsey Laney is the Art Director on Steam Bandits. She translates Jason's vision into an appealing art style and makes sure everyone's work reflects that style. Previously, she was Art Director on Blink, a USC Advanced Games Project, and her favorite games are Deus Ex: Human Revolution, the Dragon Age series, and Metal Gear Solid 2. When she’s not working on Steam Bandits, she’s making coffee so that she can be.
J.D. Cerince is the lead artist on Steam Bandits. He helps with the creation of ships and environments while expanding upon the art style defined by Lindsey. He’s been working in games and film for the past two years, most recently working at Obsidian Entertainment as a character artist. His passion for video games is inspired by Braid and Journey, which aim to elevate games as an art form. Outside of work he plays music and enjoys backpacking.
Brianna Garcia is a concept artist on Steam Bandits. She comes from Anaheim CA, and has worked on everything from children's illustration, to graphic design, to character work for independent companies and Disney Interactive. She's just now breaking in to the video games industry and finds it to be a fantastic learning experience! Outside of work, she loves reading comic books and going to Disneyland.
Liz Fiacco is a game designer focused on the character customization aspect of Steam Bandits. In the past year-and-a-half in the industry, she’s worked on an independent project, Axle, and has also garnered experience at Obsidian Entertainment and Nickelodeon Virtual Worlds. The games she just can't get enough of are Risk, Skyrim, and SSX3. When she’s not neck-deep in games, she enjoys camping, rocking to 80s music, and eating clam chowder.
Alexia Fedail is the narrative designer on Steam Bandits. A wordsmith, her job is to write, edit, and write some more. She’s been interning at Iocaine Studios for the last eight months, helping out with PR, Marketing, and story, and she adores horror games like Amnesia, Silent Hill 1-4, and Eternal Darkness. When she isn’t working on Steam Bandits, she’s usually playing games like League of Legends or kickboxing the crap out of helpless punching bags.
Matthew Yaeger is our lead server programmer and helps makes all of the magic happen behind the scenes. He is one of the original founders of Iocaine and a long-time childhood friend of Jason Fader. His fondest games are Asheron's Call, Tribes, and anything requiring a joystick. For fun, he loves traveling, going scuba diving, and being behind a camera.
There's several more on the team whom we'll introduce in the upcoming weeks!
