The Opening Movie

Brian was on stage at MCM London earlier today showing the Wasteland 2 opening movie and talking about the game and crowdfunding (you can watch the presentation on Resero Network's twitch through this link).

Of course we'd like all our backers to see this opening movie, so we put it up on Youtube for you. Enjoy!

Incredibly cheesy, but as long as I can skip it I have no problem with it.

    2. Vincent on

yeah, definitely started off rough but managed to turn it around at the end to give me goosebumps. Shibby!

    3. John Burnett on

Cheesy, but in a very good way. I liked it.

    4. madGamer on

Very good intro movie! I dont see any problem with the narrator, fits perfectly.

I think it's pretty poor quality production-wise. Pay a little bit more for a better narrator, and then just do a slideshow of concept art to tell the story comic book style.

I could have sworn that was voiced by Bruce Boxleitner at a few points.

      @Brian L

Nah, you're thinking of Max. Max was a robot, but Ace was just a guy. :)

      @Laurent Maire

Well, in their defense, the intro is largely intended to fill the player in an a very truncated version of the backstory from the first game. Pretty much everything in the intro is almost straight out of the instruction manual for the original Wasteland game. It's probably best to put it out there, because given how old (and relatively primitive) the original Wasteland is at this point, its extremely likely that many of the people who play Wasteland 2 will never even touch the first game.

It also, honestly, helps to distance the game more from Fallout. The comparisons are going to be inevitable, anyway, but its never a bad idea to have the intro immediately distance the two franchises by essentially narrating the most basic differences between the two settings.

Thank you so much for working so hard on this game. This intro was damned good! After watching this, I'd actually back a webseries (like Nuka Break) or movie for Wasteland.

I.... do not know what to say. I felt like I'm watching a cinematic movie back in those days where we wait monthly magazines to come out with fresh news and games. It just gives the 80-90's cold war nuclear apocalypse paranoia and their vision how it would happen and how it would be afterwards.
And this is just what the game promises. The mindset and visions of the team BEFORE game market cannibalized by money centeric mega companies.

People need to stop complaining about the lack of Ron Perlman and CGI, unless you would've preferred that they blew their budget on flashiness and has the actual game suffer as a result.

      Joshua Taylor on

Visually great, written terribly. Suffered from a severe case of telling-too-much. Hoping the rest of the game doesn't suffer from Diablo 3's "we got really excited so we decided to include every little bit of lore possible and kill all sense of mystery."

There's a lot to be said for the experience of figuring out what's going on in a game vs being told exactly what's up.

    15. Laurent Maire on

This is ... actually pretty good. A bit heavy on the sped-up, cut-up footage but the live-action stuff is really well staged. The dialogue is ponderous and overwrought though and comes off pretty contrived. A pity because the script is good.

Overall bloody well done! (and seriously, if you can - re-record Vargas' dialogue and make an excellent trailer even better!)

I almost can't wait to see it and enjoy the game. Looking forward to release :-D

Brilliant live action intro. Awesome :D

Great job on the filming. The narration makes me miss Ron Perlman's voice....

    20. Dennis Smith on

How about kickstart a full length movie?

    21. Brian on

Wasn't Ace a robot though? I would imagine that he's harder to kill and easier to bring back from the grave.

    22. Andrew Tuckett on

      Very cool! That is all.

    23. Nathan Schmuck on

Kinda cheesy, but I like it! And from what I heard from the presentation it saved money to be put back into the game, so thats even better!

    24. Hulker69 on

This all needs to be made into a full-length motion picture ... or TV box series

At first I was like. Live Action? WTF? But then as I watched it, the whole mad max theme came in and it actually fit. So kudos for pulling it off ok and not having it go south. Still, for future reference, I think CGI cinematics are better. So, please no live action for the torment game coming out.

Great introduction to the WL world for newbies and old timers alike!

    27. Foxfire on

is the the Honest Trailers voice over guy from youtube?

If so that's awesome and he needs to do an Honest Trailer version of the intro.

    28. Craig Stern on

Awesome. I was momentarily taken aback by the fact that it's live action, but I must say, this is extremely well done. This should set up the context for the game's opening scene nicely. :)

Curse you new job, without you I'd have made it to see the presentation live, CURSE YOU!!! Ahem... Very nice - Though I'll admit I did expect a quick recap of W1 to be thrown in (Though as I'll be playing it (Completely for the first time) a month or so prior to the release, I'm not fussed). Mind you, if the ending isn't live-action as well, this will feel very out of place.

    30. Ed130 The Vanguard on

To be honest I preferred the intro of the first gameplay video to this, but that doesn't detract from the gravitas of the live-action opener.

had no idea wasteland 2 was having a presentation at the con until i got there and looked at the schedule. had to go! was great to meet brian after the presentation as well!

    32. Jess Montgomery on

Love it, I wish more games still did this :) C&C was the daddy for it but this is damned good and thanks for keeping it true to being something pure in eccence of the older age of games while still moving forward into a hopefully bright future.

    33. Dragoon on

I got the chills watching those cannibals.
Know what? Fuck the game, give me the movie Wasteland instead. ;)

    34. Tomimt on

I think its pretty cool. Set in a great mood for the game.

    35. Tiago Morelli on

The voice should be Ron Pearlman.

    36. zacH on

I think it is really cool! I would say that there are parts where the narration doesn't feel "serious" enough in its inflections. At other points it feels like the voice should possibly be a little deeper, or at least have a bit more low-end mixed in.

I'm sure this is just completely done now, and that you won't be going back to do any changes, but would you consider asking Logan Cunningham to take a pass at the narration? He narrated Bastion, and I think he would be the perfect choice for something like this. The intro is cool either way, but I thought I'd throw out the suggestion anyway. :) I'm really excited for the final release!

(posted this on youtube as well, but I would add now that I'm here I do agree with Anton below, that if this was cut a bit shorter it wouldn't be a bad thing at all)

      I liked it.

Gives you a sense of the theme as well as a very quick recap of the reason why things are like they are when the game starts.

I apreciated that it was a somber mood and didn't fall victim to flashy explosions or the like, which I know some software/distribution companies would have insisted on just to make things un-needed flashy.

All in all, a BIG thumbs up from me.

    38. JackDandy on

Nice and cheesy, just the way it needed to be.

    39. Anton Outkine on

Not trying to be a party pooper, but it's a very, very long opener, nice-looking but somewhat boring — it would look meaner and tighter and more intense if cut twice as short.
