You are mistaken, this deal represents a net gain in funding for inXile compared to handling physical distribution ourselves. Doing this has brought more money into the game, expanding Wasteland 2's development budget. So this is money coming in to expand the game.
@Stephen "Stoibs": It is amusing. The whole "crusade against the evil publisher" mentality that is going on, depiste the said publisher doesn't even have a say in content and what not.
@Thomas Beekers, while this might help a little on the budget, it wouldn't have mattered that much for Double Fine. They already set about $1m from the budget for fulfillment, the documentary, etc., and even if they saved a significant chunk of that they would have needed more money now.
I'll say it again, just as long as I can download it from steam. I'm due a boxed game, but don't care if it gets lost in the mail. I just want to play the game.
@ET3D: How is that any worse, then, than having DS do it for them?
@Thomas Beekers: I assume DS is getting something out of it, if not up-front payment then royalties or a cut of the physical copy revenue. I agree that it's probably cheaper and wiser to do it through this company rather than doing it alone. That's my overall point; doing business in this way is entirely normal. There's nothing to be afraid of just because DS also happens to fund game development in other cases.

@Beekers: Sure it represents a net gain, but only because you saved money by outsourcing and mass production (i.e. instead of 20k(?) retail boxes just for the backers DS will produce 500k(?) with much lower costs and you get 20k of them). But you didn't go to DS and asked them for money to fund development. At least that is how I understood this deal.
If I'm wrong, so be it. It only would mean that development with kickstarter alone isn't enough for games of this size.
I pretty plainly stated why I think DeepSilver (not publishers in general) are scum if you bothered to read, not sure why it needs to kept being brought up but whatever...

Hopefully Deep Silver can't interfere with how inXile want to make the game, ie start demanding the game be tailored to a different audience. Love the screenshots!
That printer paper-looking text box has got to go. Maybe you guys can have a UI design contest like you did with the game logo on your forums.
@Inxile Would be possible to ask why you guys chose to go with a publisher for distribution, and also why you would chose someone with as troublesome a legacy as Deep Silver? Also, does your contract with them have timelines? Because that is my major worry at the moment. I would rather that the game release late but be complete then launched on time but buggy as hell or with good content scrapped or pushed to DLC because you had to meet some arbitrary contracted timeline.
Okay, inXile. Here's the thing. All I'm going to say, is that obviously one of your artists loves to add as much unnecessary bling to everything as they possibly can. All I'm sayin'.
As for the publisher thing... sometimes I wonder if people forget that inXile wants this game to make money AFTER it's shipped. Digital-only is fine, but that only works for hardcore gamers (and even then, not all of us).
Having a boxed copy (which requires someone to make boxes, FYI), means that it can sell in EB Games and I dunno, Kmart or someplace, which brings in more money.
And I dunno about you, but if I see Wasteland 2 hidden away in the budget PC section of EB Games, I'm gonna bitch and moan to the manager every. Single. Time. Put it with the AAA new releases, or there's gonna be hell to pay. :)

I don't like the Dead Island franchise, but I know for a fact that Deep Silver is a great company.

Digital distribution has been slowly becoming a force to be reckoned with.
2011's Skyrim is the last boxed game I bought; and that was only for the special edition dragon and gear.

Will the text box scroll fade?
i like to be able to see the entire "live description" and not have to scroll up and down (ex Fallout 1/2)
And i think the whole text box can be removed it takes up valuable real estate especially in a isometric angle
I hope this is in the best interests of the company, I want you guys to rake in as much money as you can and remain a strong independent platform for future releases.

Just checked what i backed and realised i backed $100 Tier. I hope the changes dont interfere with the way physical goods are going to be handled.
An aside, i cant remember - will the physical copies sent to backers have drm on them? (please say no....)
Nigel, personally I wouldn't care even if the physical came with DRM (which I doubt) because you also get 2 digital DRM free copies with your pledge (according to the FAQ on the main page) so everything's peachy.

i just upped my pledge because I'm sooo excited for this game and i have full confidence in inXile.
I think it's a good news.
Partnering with distributor means that WL2 will be sold not only digitally, but also in retail. Which in turn means more profit for inXile. And in the long run this means more success for the whole Kickstarter-funded-game-of-dreams model.

Looks fantastic as always. I feel like the font on the dot matrix printer readout is unnecessarily large. If the font were smaller, I could see using the less obtrusive first option. Can the user adjust the opacity of the paper?

I'm really glad we can move the UI elements around, but I'm hoping that it will achieve a more unified look as it develops. It feels sort of cobbled together, and maybe that's the goal, but I'm not certain it's working for me. Hard to tell at this point, but it does seem to be improving. Curious to see what the inventory screen looks like these days.

It does seem superfluous (and a waste of space) having the sprocket holes on either side of the paper. Just removing those (and widening the paper) would be an improvement. As for the rest of the UI, has technology regressed back to 1970-80 level in Wasteland 2? If so, then the look would seem appropriate.
Regarding the UI, personally I prefer a minimalistic one like for instance ToEE had it with less decorative elements and more functionality: http://www.diygamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/5_9_Promo_01.jpg (other than the order sequence for battles at the top).
I'd rather see more of the game itself than have it cluttered with UI elements.

They could have reduced that UI to a single small bar at the bottom or similar (like Fallout or Icewind Dale II).

@Dexter, as far as I know in Ultima Underworld the "game space" was so small because computers back then simply couldn't process anything bigger. so it wasn't a UI-design choice per se but rather limits of processing power. btw UU was such a great game, I loved it...
+1 for minimalistic, less decorative UI. There are too many different styles in the UI: lightbulk display ("15"), the paper with holes at the sides, wires and circuit boards. It's a bit overkill for me. I guess it shoud empasize the homebrew, MacGuyver aspect. But as a UI i don't like it very much. Not that i mind very much.
What brand will the shirts be? So that I'll have an estimate of size and quality.

For some reason I just received a second email today about this same update.
I agree with Steve, these screen shots are gorgeous. A part of me has a hard time believing that they're real. Two thumbs way up on the direction the art is going. I appreciate you guys not going too cartoony on it like some other studios have lately.

OMG, that HUD still looks awful. WTF is RAM doing as a quick slot thingy? WTF are those "end combat" buttons? It looks terrible. I didn't say anything the first time because I said to myself "a lot of other people will write about how ugly it is" but this is your answer based on user feedback? Honestly, I never saw HUD so ugly as this one is (except the previous version). Why do you put crap like that in it? RAM, and CDs and stupid stuff like that.
Make normal clean nice looking HUD FFS. Look at Shadowrun returns. The HUD looks beautiful, WITHOUT RAM, CDs, and other crap!
