Update #18

Updated our Journal (18): Assorted Administrative Details

TL;DR: Updates, registering with us, managing pledges, add-ons, support, community.

Hi Those Who Will Never Be Forgotten,

This update covers some important administrative matters. In general, we plan to make more use of our tumblr site and Facebook to share information on the project – we will use Kickstarter updates less frequently and to provide information we want to communicate to all backers. So if you want the most and latest Torment information, please follow our tumblr site. This allows you to opt-in if you want to hear more from us.

The Final Tally

Through April 5th, our donations via PayPal came to $160,495, yielding a total of almost $4.35M (and just over 77K backers) through the end of Friday!

As we mentioned over the weekend, we will include all donations through PayPal through April 30th in determining whether the $4.5M Stretch Goal was met. An additional $19,575 was donated since the Kickstarter ended, and we are currently at $4,368,997 as of the end of Sunday. Through the end of the month, we’ll be posting new totals on tumblr on Mondays and Thursdays, so please follow us there if you are interested in tracking our progress toward $4.5M. New pledges, pledge upgrades, and add-ons will all count toward whether or not this Stretch Goal is met.

Managing Your Pledge and Add-Ons

Following Wasteland 2, we set up our own database system to manage backer pledges, add-ons, and such. We’ll be leveraging this system for Torment as well. If you haven’t already, please register with us at our website.

Over the next month or so, we’ll receive the information from Kickstarter regarding your pledges and this information will become available in our system. We will notify you when this transfer is complete – at that time you’ll be able to see information there regarding your pledge. From our experience with the end of Wasteland 2’s Kickstarter, we expect this process to take several weeks – we appreciate your patience.

Another month or two after that, we’ll ask you for information regarding add-ons you may have selected, get your address information for sending you any physical goods, and ask you any other questions related to your pledge. We don’t plan to do this through Kickstarter’s system, but through our own. This allows us greater flexibility and to consolidate all of the PayPal backers and Kickstarter backers in one location.

Support

If you have any questions about your pledge, please contact us through our support form instead of through Kickstarter. Our support system is better suited for managing these types of requests and it will be easier for us to provide you with quality support.

Amazon Payments

If you are having any trouble getting your pledge processed through Amazon payments, you can donate through our PayPal store instead. Please contact our support staff if you need help.

Forums and UserVoice

Some have asked about a forum for Torment. We do have an interim forum that we set-up a couple weeks ago alongside the Wasteland 2 forums (scroll down). We may do more with Torment forums in the future, but here at least is a temporary home outside of the RPG communities linked to on our tumblr site. (Communities who wish to be added to this list, please contact us.)

We plan to continue to use the UserVoice system throughout development. We have found this experiment to be good for some purposes, but we are still iterating on how to best use it and we’ll probably make changes in the weeks and months to come. After we have the list of confirmed backers from Kickstarter (within the next month or so), we will have backer-only forums on UserVoice. (We may or may not keep a public forum that non-backers can access.) Note that registering for Torment as mentioned above also registers you for the Torment UserVoice system.

Answers to Some Common Questions

Here are answers to a couple of the most common support questions we've been receiving:

Q: If I pledged through Kickstarter, can I still do add-ons through PayPal?

A: Yes, but if your email addresses for your Kickstarter account, PayPal, and your Torment account aren’t the same, please link your other email addresses to your Torment account so that we can identify you.

Q: I donated through PayPal and the information doesn’t appear on my Torment account yet.

A: We have to process this information manually, and this is done on Mondays (covering all transactions through Sunday). So please wait until the next Monday for this information to appear in your Torment account.

It will likely be a while before the next Kickstarter Update – please join us on tumblr if you’d like more frequent Torment news.

Take care,

Kevin Saunders
Project Lead

@Samwise the Tormented/Duskwind Thanks for the clarification guys. I've only donated through KS at this point, but I am thinking of going for the $39 and above level in Paypal to get the "From the Depths" collection to go with my physical goods along with various add-ons. If I do decide to do that, I'll definitely register for the site.

Just for clarity: tumblr is for "completionists", people who want to read about press interviews, minor tidbits, concept art that Brian tweets out, stuff like that, and read the news pretty much the day it comes out.

All important updates will go on Kickstarter!

In Kickstarter updates we'll likely repeat the important stuff that tumblr covered, we just won't do updates for them immediately when they happen. You won't need to follow anything other than Kickstarter if you don't want to, all important updates will go on Kickstarter and our mailing list (so PayPal backers get the same updates via email).

@Valad Amoleo I feel you, man. I wouldn't like to miss any of the important stuff because I don't check their Tumblr often enough. It's a problem with all the gaming Kickstarters that they want us to follow their sites and stuff. And even though I understand that it's easier for them, following a different forum for each and every single project I back is gonna be a hassle. Still, I hope inXile does update here with all the important stuff and doesn't pull something like Double Fine Adventure did, making a poll for backers to choose the name of the game on the forums exclusively and never mentioning it on KS. But they have handled Wasteland 2 pretty well, so I have hopes on that.

I want to echo my appreciation for this project. 4.35$M is amazing, no matter how you slice it, and I'm very eager to see the results you accomplish. I realize you guys have an enormous undertaking ahead of you, and I feel confident that every dollar spent will go towards making a better project -

Don't forget, breaks and leisure time are important to allow the team to decompress after long hours. I don't mind if my dollars go towards pizza parties or a company trip to Six Flags - in moderation, of course.

I am still hopeful for a Stronghold, but I recognize the monumental success this KS has been and am looking forward to the wonderful game it is now your job to create.

      Bottoms up!

I agree that they're not saying there won't be any updates on Kickstarter. But how it reads, to me and other backers here, is that most of the information they put out will be on their Tumblr page.

We know they will have games after WL2 and Torment. A web presence that tracks stuff across sites/projects would be a big plus and also allow more direct donation/tiers and upgrades.

I find it a bit of an ache to have to log into different accounts for either WL2 or Torment and running a ONE-STOP-SHOP can only make sense from both a customer service point of view as well as a business one.

For now, I think it is only necessary if you pledged through both kickstarter and PayPal with different email addresses, and you want to link them.

Later when it comes to choosing which addons your above-tier pledge (if any) is for, maybe they'll use that site as well (instead of doing an email survey). But you'll be notified when that time comes, and judging from previous kickstarters it won't be for several weeks/months.

After funding both of inXile's projects in increasing amounts, I find that their move to put their "official" announcements on another site to be disappointing. Actually, who am I kidding. That right there is a load of B.S.

If they want to use tumblr for "extras" for those devoted enough to check it out, more power to them. Heck, I'd probably check it out to.

But I expect my official updates to come to me regardless of whether or not I choose to. That's what I paid for. You should not make us go through another hoop after we've already donated just so we can be sent updates.

"We don’t have the final PayPal numbers yet, but we expect to be far short of the $4.5M Stretch Goal. [...] Many backers have asked about the “Stronghold” that was at the $4.5M Stretch Goal, however. At your request and suggestion, what we’ll do is allow all PayPal contributions through the end of April to count toward determining whether or not we reached this goal."

As with many others who have commented before me, I have no plans to sign up for a secondary or tertiary site to get news/updates, regardless of creator intent. I encountered this previously with projects such as Planetary Annihilation, wherein the creators deemed it a necessity to register through their site for game access. PA further noted that said registration was necessary to push continual updates to their game, at which point we differed on the definition of a finished game and the nature of DRM.

I'm a firm believer in Torment (the game), and have no issues waiting for news - as long as the news is pushed via KS updates. I don't mind waiting for the game download, whenever it's finished - as long as the game doesn't require some kind of registration simply to play (as that, I feel, is a form of DRM, albeit a lesser form). I don't mind giving inXile my information, as long as I do so through KS or over private e-mail.

Yes, tumblr updates are easy enough to follow without registration, but laziness aside, that's another site I'd have to check when I want to follow news, which is a mild annoyance at best and a bandwidth waster at worst (for those who have data caps).

Granted, KS's data center as it relates to project management is limited, at best; however, this proves the necessity of a well-planned survey as well as connection with backers. The number of backers should be less relevant than their general happiness.

@All Begging for more money? Really?
      a) Such project needs around $6-8 million to be made without any major limitations. We have $4.4mil. Pretty good budget but still limitting (Don't mistake initial goal for a budget where all limitation are gone. No, it is a budget where only one limit falls - doability. All other possible limits are still in effect)
      b) Bear in mind that some 30% (estimation, would have to do some math) of that $4.4mil goes to fees (for KS and Paypal), making physical goods and shipping and thus ARE NOT the actual BUDGET for the game.
      c) Any aditional money until this $6-8mil make the game better. Only more than the 8 might(!) lead to wasting, doing fancy unneeded unnecessary things.
      d) Giving people option to pledge/pre-order after KS ended is only good.

People like you confuse the hell out of me ...

The 2 updates before this were basically nothing but "thank you!". This one is just what the update title says it is.

Of course they want more people involved in this, more money is the whole point of this. More money means they can get more people to work on this game (or less people longer). More money means a better game. They can't just add things like a stronghold when they don't have the funds to pay people to make this. As you said, this not a charity. People don't work for free.

And "a lot of money" is relative. 4 million isn't that much money at all in terms of game development.

I'm just confused as to what exactly you're expecting from Inxile here ...

    33. 1955.small

Creator Thomas Beekers on April 9, 2013

As said before, all major updates still go on Kickstarter and will be mailed out to PayPal backers as well. tumblr allows you a more indepth coverage, as it will repost press coverage, single images, quotes and other stuff that doesn't make for a full Kickstarter update. It is in no way obligated to follow it if all you want is the important, big updates.

Transferring data from Kickstarter to a backers center has become standard for big KS projects; Kickstarter only allows one-off polling, does not have an info center where you can constantly update your info, does not allow you to update your pledge, and does not allow you or us to change the tier you picked if it was a mistake (and we get quite a few notes on that). Moving the data to a backers center is pretty much a no-brainer.

There are free services like Blogtrottr that offer to subscribe to RSS feeds for you, and automatically send you an email in case of an update. I don't use that myself though, so can't vouch for them.

@Samwise: Well, then I got "trolled". Thank you for letting me know that. Actually it is quite a relief to know that inexile doesn't treat customers (even hard ones!) like that.

I do understand that making more of the game costs more. They say the price and we believe. But my point is that there were far more "lets rise more money" than "thank you" in the project updates. With over 4 million they should be more grateful for what they already got instead what they still need (no matter if it is something that some backers want). It's a lot of money and this is not charity.

The money they got, already has allocated uses (the base game + all the many many stretch goals up until $4.25).
Adding a stronghold is not free, it has a significant development cost. It wouldn't be fair to cut back on the quality or scope of other parts of the game (that were promised by stretch goals which *were* achieved), in order to squeeze it in.

But don't despair: We can still reach the $4.5M stronghold stretch goal via PayPal, if we keep spreading the word.

I registered for the Torment service already since it will probably play some part in fulfillment (if not in the fulfillment itself, then at least in allowing customization of rewards in the future). It's neat and all, but I agree with the tenor of the conversation here. I don't want to check a different site, or have a different "tumblr" for each and every time I want to check up on my backed games, open 10 tabs in my browser, each for different sites with different layouts, different passwords - it's simply a pain.
I don't know how frequent "less frequent" is, in terms of updates on Kickstarter, but once a month or thereabouts should be a good start. If people don't want to get Kickstarter notifications, they can turn them off for specific games.

I don't mind signing up to inXile or following Tumblr for updates, but I do agree that we need a proper forum. UserVoice is OK for polls and such, but useless for discussion and chat.

@Artturi: they're not asking for 'more' money, just giving us extra time to reach one of the stretch goals that was already announced. If that's what it costs to make a stronghold, that's what it costs. They can't be expected to provide extra content for free when they've clearly explained what the rest of the money will be spent on.

    48. Duskwind.small

Creator Duskwind (Exile in Torment) on April 9, 2013

@Lubomir Antonov - there will still be updates on kickstarter, just not as often; you can use those as a reminder to check the tumblr site, if it turns out that the updates don't mention _everything_. InXile can't win here; if they do send all their news through kickstarter, other people will complain about being spammed with too many updates.

@Artturi - ok, I'll blame the magical reaction pixies who fly around inflicting unwanted reactions on poor innocent backers.

Creator Lubomir Antonov on April 9, 2013

Well I usually don't waste my time on comments - my money does the talking - but this I have to comment on. I want to see the updates on KS, even if it is just a link to another site. As many have said, I don't want to register on yet another website - or remember the URL for that matter. I appreciate the difficulty of managing backers from different sources with different add-ons, but don't make it my problem. I am a straightforward KS backer and I don't care that somebody decided to buy a replica silver mace as an add-on through PayPal. You don't need to update me every week, unless you really want to. But I would like to see ALL updates when I go to KS. This are my feelings on the matter.
